An opportunity currently exists in the classified service within the Department of Law and Public Safety,
Division of State Police, for permanent State of New Jersey employees who meet the requirements listed
below:
TITLE:
Automotive Mechanic
SALARY:
$42,619.64 - $60,054.17

NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: Four (4)
DUTIES: Performs maintenance and repair on fleet’s vehicles. Diagnoses vehicles systems, and engine, by
using sophisticated electronic equipment to determine and perform needed repairs. Changes and maintains
batteries and changes and repairs tires and inner tubes on cars, trucks, and trailers. Prepares reports and
records of time spent, materials, parts used, and work completed. Uses test equipment to detect, adjust,
and/or correct deficiencies on vehicles and equipment, including checking and adjusting headlights, caster and
camber, emissions, timing and dwell. Diagnoses inoperative vehicles and equipment to determine the cause
of malfunction and takes corrective action. Performs adjustments on vehicle equipment and their assemblies
to conform to maintenance manual specifications, including valves, ignition systems, brakes, and clutches.
REQUIREMENTS:
TRAINING: Successful completion of one (1) year of training in automotive technology at an accredited
community college or vocational school.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience as a mechanic in the repair and installation of motors and the
maintenance and repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.
NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required year of formal training may substitute one (1)
additional year of experience as outlined above.
NOTE: In the Department of Law & Public Safety, an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in
Automobile Advanced Engine Performance and Diagnosis may be substituted for the formal training.
LICENSES: Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey. Appointees may also be
required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and
type of vehicle being operated.
The “New Jersey First Act,” N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), requires new public employees
to reside in the State of New Jersey within one (1) year of employment.
