The love of our neighbor is the only door out of the dungeon of
self
Two pretty big events will be
taking place in our towns this
week: Halloween and Confirmations; might there be a connection? When young Catholics become confirmed through words
and actions of the bishop they
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
“poured into their hearts” (see
Romans 5:5). When kids go out
on Halloween, through words
(trick or treat) and actions (dressing up, knocking on doors, opening pillow cases or plastic bags,
saying thank you) they receive the
gift of candy.
But candy doesn’t last.
And it rots your teeth,
And Halloween rarely changes
one life or one’s world for the better. . .might there be another connection?
Our Church law says, “Confirmation impresses a character
(upon the Christian) and by it they
are enriched by the gift of the Holy Spirit and bound more perfectly
to the Church; it strengthens
them and obliges them more firmly to be witnesses to Christ by
word and deed and to spread and
defend the faith” (canon 879)
At Halloween we put on costumes, we knock on our neighbors
doors, and we laugh and scare and
have fun with others. The roads
of our town will be filled with folks
reaching out to their neighbors
and feeding each other (albeit
with candy, but also with smiles).
At Confirmation, we put on a new
character – each of us chose a new
name – a saint whom we wished
to emulate. Did we want to be
courageous and strong like St.
Sebastian or St. Peter? Did we
wish to follow the beauty and pu-
rity of St. Claire or St. Veronica?
Maybe St. Francis’s love of animals or St. Blaise’s care for the
sick inspired us. We choose a
saint – and all of them in heaven
were waiting to hear whom we
would choose.
I can imagine Heaven filled
with the countless hosts of saints .
. all dressed in different costumes
from their different times, each
one waiting to hear who would be
selected to be your confirmation
saint. In choosing them, they also
said “yes” to choosing us back,
and thus began a deeper spiritual
relationship with them – one
which we’ll come to know better
in Heaven when we arrive and actually see Sebastian, Peter, Claire,
Veronica, Francis and Blaise.
I think here is the connection –
we put on costumes and those
costumes help give us the character to go out to our neighbor’s
house and knock on their door. At
Confirmation, our young people
will be given the Holy Spirit and
the company of a saint to go out
to their neighbors and bring them
the love of Jesus; to be the “Front
line” living invitations to come
back to Christ and his Church for
those who are away, or to “come
and see” for those who long for
hope, and light, and life.

mentor of C.S Lewis, goes, “The
love of our neighbor is the only
door out of the dungeon of self,
where we mope and mow, striking
sparks, and rubbing phosphorescence out of the walls, and blowing our own breath in our own
nostrils, instead of issuing to the
fair sunlight of God, the sweet
winds of the universe.” Please
pray for our young people becoming Confirmed Catholics this
Thursday; some of their own families need them to witness right at
home – which can be hard if
you’ve never seen your parents
pray or go to Church. These kids
will be equipped for witness at
home and the world through the
gift of the Spirit and the company
of the saints, just like us
(p.s. Happy Halloween & All Saints)
PRAYER:
Dear Lord, the Scriptures say,
Hope does not disappoint because you have poured out
your love into our hearts by the
Holy Spirit whom you have given to us. Give anew the Holy
Spirit to our confirmandi and to
our whole parish, that we
might bring the light and love
of Jesus again to our homes
and to our neighbors –thus becoming the living invitations
they need to find you. Amen.

Prayer and Music:
The primary purpose of the choir is to assist
in leading the faithful in sung prayer. Our goal is
to embellish what the congregation sings with
harmony and/or descants. This is why we are
always asking everyone to participate and sing
out. We need all the faithful to become one
with the celebration in the same manner that
we pray the spoken prayer in unison. Just think
what the Mass would be if the priest said “The
Lord Be With You” and no one responded “And
With Your Spirit” it leaves our prayer incomplete.
When we hesitate to respond to sung prayer it leaves the beautiful stories told in the hymns
we sing incomplete. It also leaves our choirs incomplete. Believe it or not the Faithful are also
part of the choir. When everyone sings the
choir harmonizes with you and we become one
huge choir lifting our voices to embellish the
celebration of Holy Mass. There is no need to
have a good singing voice just to make a
JOYFUL sound unto God.

Update: Religious education at St. Martha’s is off
to a great start! Our 60 catechists plus classroom aides and adult safety volunteers have
made everything run smoothly, and Mr. Lou has
enhanced our lessons with music that helps us
pray and lifts our spirits! Many thanks to everyone.

The rehearsals have been successfully completed and this Thursday, Bishop O’Connell will
be visiting St. Martha’s to confer the sacrament
of Confirmation on 102 of our youth. Please
pray the above prayer to the Holy Spirit for our
confirmandi.
Plans are in the works for this year’s high
school youth programs. The first general meeting will be held in the next few weeks. Stay

Our parish goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal, formerly known as the Bishop’s Annual
Appeal, has remained the same as past years
at $83,000. As of October 7, 2014 we have received pledges of $67,000 from 397 parishioners. We are currently at 81% of our goal.
If we reach 100% of our goal, our parish will
get 15% back to help us. That is $12,450. Imagine how that could help our parish. Thank you
