Introduction
Any visitor to the College in the past 2 weeks will have seen
our Year 12, 2014 students coming and going from the
College as they complete their final HSC examinations. They
are particularly conspicuous because they no longer wear the
College uniform to school each day.
Friday 24rd October

Our Year 12 IB students will join their HSC counterparts in
these same rituals when their IB examinations begin on
Tuesday 4th November.

This is a particularly stressful time for all our Year 12 students
because each of them sees so much of their future riding on
the outcome of these examinations.
I am hoping that it is a great comfort to all of them that they
have been very well prepared for their final examinations and I
have also reminded them on more than one occasion before
they left us last term that over 83% of our last year’s Year 12
students were offered places in tertiary institutions!
I would also hope that they have heard many times over in
their time here at PAC that their ultimate worth resides in
having a relationship with our Heavenly Father and that this
can only be achieved by knowing his son Jesus.
I look forward to seeing this year’s IB and HSC results but I
look forward much more to hearing from each of our Year 12
students that at some time in their lives, they have found the
real meaning of life in Christ.

Year 9 Drama Showcase
On Friday 17th October those of us who had the opportunity to be in the
audience of the Year 9 Drams Showcase were thoroughly entertained by our
very enthusiastic and engaging Year 9 Drama students.
Thank You Year 9. It was a wonderful way to end the working week.

Be healthy – be active
Children and adults need physical activity every day. Activity helps build better bones, muscles, joints
and helps maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity can also reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2
diabetes and some cancers. Get active anyway you can - walking, riding, swimming, and playing active games such as Duck, Duck, Goose or Bull Rush.
Great reasons to be active for children and parents

boosts confidence

improves fitness

makes bones and muscles stronger

HICES DAY “A HIT”
On Wednesday, October 8th, a group of our public speakers travelled to Macarthur Anglican School
in Cobbitty to participate in a public speaking training day. This event, the HICES Speechcraft
Communicator’s Forum, was sponsored by the Heads of Indepencent Co-Education Schools
organisation.
Our speakers joined students from six other schools in hearing talks by experts on such relevant
topics as ‘Why Bother Being a Speechmaker’, ‘What Makes A Great Speech ’, What Adjudicators Are
Looking For’ and ‘Introduction to Impromptus’. Video clips of particularly effective speeches, such as
a recent speech by Emma Watson at the United Nations, were analysed and discussed. Our students
expressed their appreciation on the quality and helpfulness of these presentations.
What followed was, if anything, even more valuable. Students from different schools were put into
groups of four to participate in an activity called ‘The Pitch’. Each group selected one topic from
among three options; technology addiction, body image and reality T.V. They then researched the
topic and composed a speech in with each team member was required to speak. The teams then
delivered their speeches in their respective divisions, Years 7 and 8, and Years 9 and 10. The
students then chose which group presentation was the best. The final activity was the ‘Showcase’
where the best teams of each division presented their speech. All of our students performed well.
The feedback I received from the students was uniformly positive. They all felt that it was a most
valuable, worthwhile and enjoyable learning experience. I congratulate our students on their fine
efforts and thank Mr. Ian Morrison who drove us to and from Cobbity.

PAC Students attend the UWS University Writers Day
On Friday 10th October, a small group of year 10 students attended an excursion to the UWS Writers
Day held at Macarthur Anglican School. Many schools from the Western Sydney region were
involved. The students were invited to participate based on their current achievements and interests in
English and creative writing.
Students enjoyed a keynote address by author and UWS doctoral candidate Michael Ahmad speaking
on “Breaking the rules” in creative writing. They were able to select from a range of workshops run by
leading authors and academics. Workshop topics included; journalism in Australia, critical thinking,
effective characterisation, creative writing and poetry.
Students commented that:
“It was good to be able to explore creative writing in detail and broaden our horizons.”
“Today was interesting and something different. The range of workshops was great.”
It was a great day for the students to participate in and certainly something for our younger students
to look forward to in the future.
Students who attendee the UWS Writers Day now have the opportunity to enter a writing competition
with a first prize of an I-pad and conditional $20,000 scholarship to the University of Western Sydney.
We wish our students best wishes with their entry and future creative writing.

Singing with Robbie Williams
On Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September, Baylee McPherson, one of our
talented Year 4 students, had the opportunity to show her singing talents by being
selected to sing on stage with Mr Robbie Williams. Baylee, along with 18 other talented
boys and girls were chosen to perform in front of 20,000 people at Acer Arena during
Robbie’s Sydney leg of his “Swings Both Ways” concert tour of Australia. The
performance was also video taped for the possibility of being released on the DVD of
his concert. This was a terrific achievement for Baylee to sing along side an
internationally acclaimed performer like Robbie Williams. Congratulations Baylee, the
school is very proud of you.
Where are they Now?
Jonathan Palmer Year 12, 2008
I finished my HSC at PAC in 2008. In 2009 I commenced a combined degree of Bachelor of
Engineering (Mechatronics) and Master of Biomedical Engineering at the University of NSW. The
highlight of my degree was going on a student exchange to McGill University in Montreal for a
semester. The temperature difference there was shocking, it was -27°C when I arrived. I loved
living in a place constantly blanketed in snow. The French influence there was awesome and the
food was fantastic (Poutine is my favourite thing). I made some great friends there that I still keep
in contact with. After the semester was over, I backpacked around the USA for two months. I
started in New York and essentially did a giant U across the entire country. I saw too many
incredible things to even count and I learnt a great sense of self-reliance and independence that I
wouldn’t have got elsewhere. I cannot recommend the whole experience more; it changed me in
some profound ways.
I discovered my love of research during my Honours project in the final year of my degree.
Although this was probably the most stressful time of my life, the chance to discover something
new was unbeatable. When I graduated, I was offered the opportunity to start a PhD on a
fascinating project with the Cochlear Implant. I accepted and I now get to work on ground-breaking
research with some extremely intelligent people.
Melanie Palmer, Year 12 2005
I finished school in 2005 and wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go except that I liked the idea
of travelling for work.
I decided to study International Business at Macquarie University. Travel was the priority, however,
so I worked 3 jobs throughout uni so I could support myself for a semester abroad.
I was accepted into Copenhagen Business School in my second year and backpacked Europe for
a few months before arriving in Denmark. I had lots of crazy adventures and met lifelong friends,
most of whom I see at least every second year.
Heading towards the end of my degree I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but felt like a change
of scene. I was offered a number graduate positions but decided to move to Canberra and work for
the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.
AGD was a great place to work to satisfy my eclectic tastes and I had the opportunity to work in
numerous, disperate policy areas including the National Human Rights Consultation, anti-money
laundering in the Pacific, international child abduction and indigenous justice. The Government also
sponsored me to concurrently complete a Master’s degree in Public Policy at the Crawford School.
In 2009, on the first day of work in Canberra I met my now-husband Ross. We married in 2010 and
I’m very fortunate that Ross shares my love of spontaneous and unusual travel. One of our first
trips together was to North Korea and we’ve been on a lot more adventures since.
In 2011 I transferred to the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), where I was
responsible for administering Australia’s $150 million aid program to Vietnam. AusAID was an
incredible workplace and I had the opportunity to explore my passion for international development
and travel at the same time, including several trips a year to south-east Asia.
During 2013, I was seconded to the Kimberley Land Council for 3 months and organised the
Kimberley International Indigenous Ranger Conference, which was held on a remote outstation
300km north of Broome, WA in one of the most stunning natural landscapes I’ve ever seen.
Since we’ve been married Ross and I have been running several businesses on the side and we
decided that 2014 was the year to take a leap of faith and put everything into running our most
recent eCommerce start-up. In May we moved to Melbourne and are running our business
SuitMeUp.com.au full time. It’s a whirlwind and like nothing we have ever done before, but we love
every minute of it and are quickly growing our team, in Australia and overseas. We have a few
other projects in their infancy, most of which will require us to travel!
Softball Super Stars !!
Penrith Anglican College has some softball super stars. At the recent NSW Softball State
Championships Patrick Beach (Year 5), Jorja-Kate Ryan (Year 5), Xander Ruggeri (Year 7) and Alex
Ryan (Year 7) were members of Penrith City Teams which were crowned champions for 2014.
Patrick and Xander’s Under 13 team was undefeated throughout the tournament and won their Grand
Final against Macarthur 2 – 0. This is a wonderful achievement but more amazingly, this is the 2nd year
in a row that their team has been undefeated in the NSW Championships.
Not to be outdone, Jorja-Kate and her older sister Alex were members of the Penrith City Under 13
Girl’s Team. Once again, their team was also undefeated. They came from behind in their Grand Final,
storming home in the last innings to defeat Manly-Warringah 9 – 5 in a thrilling finish.
This is the first time in 19 years that Penrith City has won the
State Title in this age group which made the victory just that little
bit more special. It is also the first time since 1999 that a Penrith
City Team has won both competitions in the same age group.
Congratulations to all four of our super stars. We are all very
proud of your achievements.

Congratulations to Charlotte Britton (Year 8), Bethany Mercieca (Year 9), Georgia Murray, Alexandra
Ryan (both Year 7) and Ashleigh Ryan (Year 9) who all trialled, and were successful in being selected
in, the NASSA Open Softball team on Wednesday, 15th October. The trials were held at PAC on a
cold and damp day, but the girls performed strongly, and will be an integral part of the NASSA team,
who will compete in the AICES Championship on Wednesday, 29th October at Blacktown International Sports Park. Good luck to all!
PAC also has many students playing softball outside of school competitions that have recently been
very successful. Congratulations to Alexandra Ryan and Alexander Ruggeri (both Year 7) who were
members of the Penrith City Softball Association Under 13 girls and boys teams who were both undefeated Champions at the 2014 Softball NSW State Championships. It’s been 15 years since Penrith
City has taken a “double” at a State Championship – job well done!
Congratulations also to Georgia Murray (Year 7) and Matthew Beach (Year 8) who have both been
named in NSW Under 15s Metro teams, who will play in the 2015 Softball
Australia U15 Regional Championships. In a change to previous years,
which has seen this championship run as a stand-alone event, the U15s will
be combining with the 2015 U19 National Championships, held in January.
Georgia will travel to recently renovated West Beach Softball Complex in
Adelaide for her championship, whilst Matt will stay closer to home, playing
on the familiar fields of Blacktown International Sports Park. PAC looks
forward to hearing about your successes in early 2015!

NSW PSSA Athletic Championships
Penrith Anglican College had a record 10 students competing at the NSW PSSA Athletic
Championships. Athletes experienced two distinct seasons over the two day carnival. The
Wednesday was wet, windy and freezing while the Thursday was mild, sunny and perfect
conditions for athletics. Congratulations to all our athletes for reaching such a prestigious
level of competition.
The Senior Girl’s Relay Team (Lucinda Harvey, Clare Wentworth, Karis Statheos & Aaliyah
Veneros) finished with a great time of 58.90.
The Junior Girl’s Relay Team (Baylee McPherson, Maddison McIntosh, Tiarne Comber &
Ella Sweeney) placed 2nd in their heat, 7th in their semi - final and were the 16th fastest team
in all of NSW with a time of 1.02.52 which is an amazing effort.
Miles Harrold jumped 4.49m in the Senior Boys Long Jump and this placed him 18th in NSW
which is also a remarkable result.
The star of the carnival once again was Hugh Harrold. Hugh continued his stellar season
with some astonishing results. Hugh jumped 4.10m to finish 8th in the Junior Boys, ran a
28.92 to place 5th in the Junior Boys 200M. Hugh left his best to last by running an
inspirational race in the Junior Boys 800M. Hugh hit the front with 100M to go and looked the
winner but was challenged by 3 other athletes. In a spine tingling finish, Hugh found an extra
bit of energy to hang on for a bronze medal in a time of 2.26:30. The third placing meant
Hugh had qualified for the SSA ( School Sport Australia) Athletic Championships. Hugh is in
an elite group of athletes from PAC to reach this level of competition.
Hugh will travel to Penguin (Tasmania) for the championships in November. I’ve heard on
good advice that Penguin is aptly named. The weather can be
freezing and only penguins could survive. Hugh may need to
pack his thermal underwear and take a thermos of hot
chocolate to keep him warm.
Congratulations to Hugh and all our athletes for their performances at PSSA. We are all extremely proud of you all.

Athletics Wrap-Up – AICES, CIS and All-Schools
The end of Term 3 and start of Term 4 is always a busy one with Athletics Carnivals running one
after the other, and the 2014 season has been a very successful one!
PAC’s results at the AICES Championship on Monday, 1st September were some of the best – if
not THE best – in our history. PAC assisted NASSA in taking out 1st place on the day, finishing
5th on the points table and an outstanding 2nd on the medal tally with 14 Gold medals, 8 Silver
medals and 6 bronze medals. Three of our students are now AICES record holders:
Mackenzie Stone (Year 7) – 13 years high jump, clearing 1.55m
Harrison Stratford (Year 7) – 12 years 800m, with a time of 2:25.37
Angus Harrold (Year 8) – 14 boys discus, throwing 46.80m
Special mention must be made of our two 14 & under 4x 100m relay teams – our girls team of
Grace Glasheen (Year 7), Ashley Irwin (Year 8), Kaylah Lamb and Paris Rigney (both Year 9)
finished with a Silver medal and our boys team – Nathan DeCelis, Angus Harrold, Callum Payer

Senior School Sports Update
Just over two weeks later, on Wednesday, 17th September, PAC’s Athletic team returned to Homebush
for the CIS Championship. Our athletes competed brilliantly, especially amongst such strong
competition from all independent schools across the state. The highlight of the day was saved for the
last event, with our 14 & under boys relay team bringing home a Bronze medal for PAC – well done
Nathan, Angus, Callum and Aaron!
Special mention – and a HUGE thank you – to Hannah-Rose Stewart (Year 12), who left school
part-way through her very last day of classes at PAC to compete in the 18 years 400m. Hannah-Rose
finished her athletics career at PAC with a Silver medal in her pet event. Congratulations on your
consistent achievement on the track over your time at PAC.

Finally, the start of Term 4 brought us to the 4-days of the NSW All-School Athletics Championship,
from 9th until 12th October. This event pits students from all schooling sectors against each other, and
tough competition is always expected on the day. Unfortunately, CIS do not enter a team to this event,
however, many of our students nominated themselves to compete in a range of events.
Our standout athlete at this event was Angus Harrold (Year 8), who threw a PB in his favoured event,
discus. Angus brought home a Silver medal, throwing 51.64m, an amazing throw for a 14 year old. We
look forward to the coming years with this event!
Lovedeesh Toor (Year 11) also finished on the podium in the 16 years hammer throw, throwing 36.48m
to bring home a Bronze medal

It is that time of the year when disco fever hits the school! The annual discos for Pre K to Year 6 will be
held on Friday 7th November. (There is a detailed flyer attached to this Vine).
Every Pre K to Year 6 student is encouraged to attend these great fun events. Parents are also
welcome and can join their children on the dance floor if they so wish.
I suspect the Headmaster will have some sort of back, leg, foot, arm or toe injury by then and will
only be able to watch the great moves as they are happening on the dance floor and not be part of the
action himself.
Maybe next year? Oh that’s right, he won’t be here next year.
It will still be a great night so lock it into your diaries now.

Thoughts from the Pastor
WISDOM CALLS
An angel appears at a board meeting and tells the CEO that in return for his unselfish and
exemplary behaviour, the Lord will reward him with his choice of infinite wealth, wisdom or beauty.
Without hesitating, the CEO selects infinite wisdom.
"Done!" says the angel, and disappears in a cloud of smoke and a bolt of lightning. Now, all heads
turn toward the CEO, who sits surrounded by a faint halo of light over his head. To break the
silence one of his colleagues whispers, "Say something."
The CEO looks at them and says, "I should have taken the money."
True wisdom is very different from the world's philosophies or knowledge. True wisdom is God's
wisdom and transcends human limitations. God's wisdom is defined and expressed through a
living, breathing relationship with God's son Jesus. The wisdom of knowing Jesus goes beyond this
world's wisdom and to know Jesus makes us wise for life.
In the letter of 1 Corinthians the writer will contrast the wisdom of the world to the wisdom of God:
'And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with
lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him
crucified'. 1 Cor 2:1-2
Join us each Sunday and grow in the wisdom of God.

help each other grow more deeply in their love of Jesus, grow in their knowledge of the Bible, and
get connected with one another in community creating genuine friendships. If you’d like some
more information, please contact Teresa Brutto in the Church Office on 4760 0155 or come along
on Tuesday mornings ~ we’d love to see you there! Bubs welcome!
