AGES MEETINGS IN 2014
AGES, the premier gynaecological surgical society in the Australia/New Zealand region, will
host three meetings in 2014, presenting the high calibre research and innovative thinking for
which the society is renowned.
As a consequence of AGES’ reputation for first class education, science and innovation, in
conjunction with our industry partners, one third of all RANZCOG Fellows and even more
trainees are members of AGES. Our research grants also deliver high quality projects to
advance women’s health in the area of gynaecological surgery, and our AGES Training
Program in Gynaecological Endoscopy is a significant advance in the education of future
specialists in our profession.
So join us in 2014 for what AGES does best – education, information and collaboration.

Technology has driven modern gynaecological surgery with many variations in techniques
and instrumentation now available to the surgeon. From robotics to ablation, ultrasound to
procedural instrumentation, technological changes have required surgeons to keep pace with
both the capacity to perform these procedures and the science that underpins their success.
Energy sources, implantable devices, pre-operative scanning capabilities and 3D camera
systems are readily available and allow surgeons to perform better than ever before. Add to
this a range of hysteroscopic instruments that simplify and automate many complex or
uncommon procedures and surgeons have never had more choice in the operating room.
So many choices, so many operations, so many variations.
But what impact do all of these choices have on the outcomes for women? Do these farreaching technologies impair rather than improve training? What are the drivers for
patients, for surgeons and for industry? The fact that many surgical techniques come with
bullet-proof science to validate and substantiate ideas and ideals are testimony to the fusion
of industry and surgeon. The capacity to ask for changes and have those challenges answered
continues to be a cornerstone of improving healthcare. Meeting all of those challenges, how
we can fit these changes into the current fiscal climate and where this may all head to
remains to be seen.
So in keeping with AGES’ promise to deliver the very latest in science, technology and
gynaecological surgery, we invite you to support the AGES Annual Scientific Meeting in
Sydney, March 2014 as we dissect, discuss and demonstrate what we find in the operating
room of today and tomorrow.

We are delighted to invite you back to Adelaide for this the fifteenth annual AGES Pelvic
Floor Symposium and Workshop.
Adelaide is a city of diversity, from the excitement and noise of the Fringe Festive and Clipsal
500 to the relaxed pace of the wine country, beaches and the bikes of the Tour Down Under.
In this backdrop of diversity we wish to review the array of options available to the pelvic
floor surgeon. With the help of our international faculty, Rosanna Kho USA, Ash Monga UK,
and Peter Rosenblatt USA, we will explore the lessons learnt in the journey from native tissue
repair to mesh augmentation and back again.
The program will include the role of Robotic Surgery and Mesh Augmentation, focusing on
how we can use these procedures to improve our native tissue repairs. The program will also
include; interactive sessions, which will discuss obstacles encountered during surgery and
how the generalist pelvic surgeon can overcome these hurdles, presentations from other
disciplines designed to facilitate patient selection and recovery, as well as the ever popular
morning of live surgery to generate debate.
When the day is done, join us in celebrating the reopening of Adelaide’s most loved icon – the
recently redeveloped Adelaide Oval. Enjoy spectacular views from the Members’ Dining
Room, reminisce stories of its famous test matches and dreams of the AFL history to come.
We are confident this entertaining and educational meeting which will attract a significant
audience, and welcome your support.

AGES FOCUS MEETING 2014
‘Complications’
24 & 25 October 2014
Perth
Co-Chair: Dr Stuart Salfinger
Co-Chair: Dr Jim Tsaltas
The AGES 2014 Focus Meeting will be held in Perth on 24 & 25 October 2014.
The focus will be on complications. Complications, surgical error or mistake.
All complications cause us all a great degree of concern in practice. This meeting will focus on
complications and error, how errors occur, why they occur, how we detect and manage them.
We will also examine the learning process and how we learn from complications and avoid errors in
the future.
Live surgery will also feature with a session specifically looking at avoiding complications at
laparoscopic hysterectomy.
