Congratulations: Congratulations to the following talented students who have successfully auditioned for a role in
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at The Concourse in Chatswood: Dominique C, Julien C
Larisa C, Miriam J.
They will be performing alongside Sam Moran (The Wiggles, Play Along with Sam), Harmony Lovegrove (The
Voice Kids, Schools Spectacular) and a cast of Sydney's most talented performers under 20 years of age.
The production will run from January 9-24 and tickets are on
sale now. A flyer is attached to this newsletter if you are
interested in seeing the production.
Ryde Schools Spectacular: I had the pleasure of attending
the Ryde Schools Spectacular at the Sydney Opera House
last Monday night. Over 1000 students from 27 primary and
high schools showcased their talents in singing, dancing,
drama and musical talent. Our Junior Choir combined with a
number of other school choirs to perform a large number of
songs. Their performance was outstanding and the students
thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to perform at such an
amazing venue.
Thank you to all our families who supported the students by
joining us at the Opera House. A special thank you to Mrs
Rees and Mrs Toomey not only for their ongoing efforts to
teach the students all the musical numbers they performed,
but also for attending the Opera House for the rehearsal on Sunday and the performance on Monday night.
Kindergarten Orientation: Next Wednesday 29 October and Thursday 30 October will see the first of our
scheduled Kindergarten 2015 orientation sessions taking place. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome
to our school all of our new families and to extend the warm welcome to all of the new students who will be joining
us as they commence their formal school years.
Kindergarten Orientation are important sessions allowing the children to experience ‘big school’ for the first time.
Mrs Bashinsky and the Kindergarten team have planned some wonderful learning experiences for the coming
weeks. Whilst the children are in class the parents will be provided with some insight into the amazing school that
Denistone East is, with air conditioned rooms, interactive whiteboards in all classrooms and wireless infrastructure.
All this combined with a very pleasant teaching environment, quality teaching and learning programs ensures our
st
children will be well equipped to forge ahead as 21 century learners.
Enrolments 2015: If you are aware that your circumstances have changed and you will not be joining us for the
2015 school year could I please request that you contact the school office as soon as possible to inform them of
your changing circumstance. As part of our ongoing planning for the class structures, room allocations and teacher
appointments for 2015 it is vitally important that we are aware of any students who may not be returning to
Denistone East. Your support in keeping us informed is greatly appreciated.
Selective High School Placement for 2016 Parent Information Session: To assist parents with any questions
they may have regarding Selective High School Placements for Year 7 students for 2016, a parent information
session has been organised for Tuesday 28 October 6.00-7.00pm in Year 5 classroom. Anne Robertson from the
High Performing Students Unit will run the session and answer any questions.
Selective High School Placements for 2016: A reminder that Selective High School Placement applications for
Year 7 students for 2016 is now open. The application information booklet is available on the High Performance
Student Unit website at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement.
Reen Challenge: Denistone East PS has won the REEN School Challenge! Congratulations and a big thank you
to Jane Cole, Tammy Scharenguivel and the P&C Environment Committee who were instrumental in organising
sustainable initiatives over the last few months as well as the SRC who organised paperless week. The school has
won a $500 Bunnings voucher as well as $2000 towards landscaping.
Moonlight Market: The annual P&C Moonlight Market will be held this Friday 24 October from 5-9pm. We look
forward to a fun filled night. A huge thank you to the P&C for their entire organisation and to the many parents who
are volunteering their time on the night to support the school.

Kindergarten Enrolments: Any parent who is yet to complete an enrolment form, or who is required to submit
further documentation should contact the school office to finalise enrolment requirements.
Runaway Success at Denistone East: On Tuesday 16 September Denistone East held and Adidas School FunRun and managed to raise an incredible $12 033.85. Students pounded the pavements seeking sponsorship from
family, friends and members of the local community in order to raise money for the school. Thank you to all
parents, students and teachers whose enthusiasm and support made the event such a success. The prizes are on
their way and will be with you as soon as possible.

PBEL: Congratulations to all the Safe, Respectful, Learners who
earned their bronze and silver badges in assembly last week. The
PBEL focus for this week is on transition areas. Transition areas are
places where the children travel to and from the classroom, library or
hall. Strive cards will be awarded to students who are: safe by walking
quietly and keeping left when walking up and down stairs or pathways;
respectful by moving in a timely manner and taking turns when
entering and leaving classrooms, library or hall; and a learner by being
prepared for lessons and placing their bag and belongings neatly in the

Transition to High School Program: This term Year 6 students have
undertaken a transition program, in preparation for High School. During
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon sessions students have
been regrouped and follow a fortnightly timetable based on two 40
minute periods. The program has already proved insightful as students
have tested their organisation skills through the subjects PE,
Geography, History, Science and Visual Arts.
Sydney Youth Writing: Congratulations to Victoria (6S), Eric (6S) and
Bryan (6S) who are finalists in this year’s competition and will be
published in this year’s book Drop, Wind, Keep. There were over 3000
entries across the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 categories with students
being recognised at the awards ceremony at State Parliament House on Tuesday 25 November.
Kids Teaching Kids: As previously reported, on Thursday 11 September Stage 3 Leaders attended the Kids
Teaching Kids initiative at PLC Pymble. The students were inspired to make a difference in their world. Dominique
(6S) who has a passion for animal welfare is now putting this into practice by raising funds supporting Edgars
Mission – see below for details. Congratulations Dom for taking your idea and making it a reality.

Edgar’s Mission: Edgar’s Mission is a not-for-profit farm animal sanctuary in Victoria that provides a safe haven
for all animals in need. Right now it is home to thousands of rescued farm animals, from ducks and chickens to
cows and horses. They do the best they can and try to take in as many animals as possible, however their
resources are limited and they need a bit of help. That’s why we’re asking for your support. On Monday 27 October
your child will be given a colouring in competition to celebrate “Be Kind to Animals Week” which was October 1-7
(though it should be every week). We ask that you donate a gold coin to enter the competition which will be due
back Monday 3 November. There will be one winner and one runner up per grade and great prizes to be won.

2015

We are in the process of preparing for the Chinese New Year Celebration for 2015 and
we will need to form a parent committee group to help out with the planning of Chinese
New Year performances and activities. We will be meeting during the coming week to
discuss the possible plans for next year’s Chinese New Year celebration. Please let us

preparation for this festive festival for students and community at Denistone East Public
School. We would love to have your help and support on this!

Athletics Carnival: Congratulations to all the students and teachers who were involved in the Athletics Carnival
yesterday. Mother Nature only just let us hold our carnival, but it was a great success. I would like to say a big
thank you to all the parents who kindly offered their assistance yesterday with the running of discus, long jump and
time keeping. I really appreciated your help yesterday and we couldn't have got through all the events so smoothly
without you.

Softball: Denistone East played Meadowbank on Friday. Both the girls and boys team played some impressive
softball resulting in two victories. The girls won 16-4, one of our highest scores. Well done to all the girls who at
least got one home run each. The boys also won 11-1. They had some big hits out in the outfield and also fielded

T-Ball: Last Friday 17 October the Junior Boys and Girls T-ball teams played Meadowbank Public School at
Meadowbank. The girls continued to improve in both their fielding and batting, resulting in a win to Denistone East
14 to 11. Player of the Match was Bruna who showed some excellent fielding skills when playing short stop. The
boys tried valiantly against Meadowbank who hold the leading position in the 2014 Competition. In the first innings
our boys lead 8 to 3 but due to an amazing second innings Meadowbank eventually won the game 21 to 12.
Congratulations to Lucas who was awarded Player of the Match. Deb Ricketts
Cricket: Junior boys played a comfortable game against Eastwood Public School winning 72-52. Player of the
Match went to Thomas while the Skills Award went to Max. Sportsmanship was awarded to Sam.
Once again the senior boys played a fantastic game against Eastwood Public School. It was a close game but our
batting teams worked together to take the game with one over to spare. Beautiful batting from Ashwin and Steven
to finish the game. A "high five" to bowlers Vaheeson and Steven getting a maiden each and Denzel for great
fielding. Player of the Match goes to Denzel, Skills Award to Steven and Sportsmanship belongs to Luke for
encouraging the team through Eastwood's fast bowlers. Lee Magri

P&C Update
Save the Date: DEPS Annual Moonlight Market Night Friday 24 October from 5-9pm
The countdown is on – only 3 sleeps to go!
Our annual Moonlight Market will be on THIS COMING Friday 24 October from 5pm –
9pm. It is a fun night that brings the school and local communities together for food, fun
and great shopping! We will have our usual gift hamper stall, glow-sticks and international
food as well as stalls ranging from jewellery to home wares and preserves.
It is a big night and the P&C need a lot of help, so please take a look to see if you can
volunteer for the following:
On the Night – We need many, many volunteers to help in various roles on the Market night itself. From helping
out on P&C stalls to traffic control, security and set up / clean up. It only has to be for an hour and you will find it fun
and a great way to meet other parents.
We especially need help from;
 3pm - 4pm - we need at least 4 - 5 more volunteers
 4pm - 5pm - we need at least 5 - 6 more volunteers
 5pm - 6pm - we need at least 5 more volunteers
 8pm - 9pm - we need at least 6 more volunteers
In addition, additional volunteers between 9am - 3pm would be helpful to get as much market setup out of the way
as possible. If anyone else wants to volunteer at any other time this is also greatly appreciated.

Peter Sculthorpe AO OBE (29 April
Peter Sculthorpe was a prolific Australian composer. His music combined
influences of Asian and Islander music together aspects of Australian
Indigenous music and also that of the heritage of the West. He was known
primarily for his orchestral and chamber music, such as Kakadu (1988) and
Earth Cry (1986), which evoke the sounds and feeling of the Australian bushland and outback. He also
wrote 18 string quartets, using unusual instrumental sound effects, works for piano, and two operas. He stated that
he wanted his music to make people feel better and happier for having listened to it. His work was often
distinguished by its distinctive use of percussion.

DEPS FIRST MUSIC CAMP – Nov 22- 23 A reminder that the First ever DEPS Music camp is an
intensive program with the focus on the end of year performance. All players in the music program will be involved
in a mass ensemble item.
The vital rehearsals for this will take place at camp, with workshops to learn to perform the item and practice
performing in a group of 100 children.
This fun filled camp also involves;
Tutorials
main ensemble rehearsals
learn to conduct classes
music composition workshops
combined item rehearsals and
organized craft and sport and it’s LOADS of fun!!
Joining the Music Committee in 2015 There are many parents involved in the music committee who support the
coordinator and please consider joining the music committee in 2015. Roles available include: a liaison parent for
each ensemble / musical instrument coordinator / library / newsletter / events / music camp / school liaison.

We still have many performance opportunities coming up in Term 4 which need volunteer help: Moonlight
market, camp, End of year performance night, Carols by Candlelight. Please email Christine if you are able to help
with any/all of these events.
Ring Binders..yep, still need them. If any parents can take home
a folder or two of music to file in the next few weeks that would be
very helpful. Come and collect in the mornings from the band
room.

Thanks to every effort that was made towards creating a more sustainable school. Well done DEPS!
Thanks to everyone at Garden club for another great sessions of weeding while we made further plans for
gardening and litter prevention at DEPS.

Litter Free Eastwood
Do you know that over 100 local businesses and over 580 consumers have signed up Anti-Litter
Pledge to turn Eastwood into a litter free place?
Denistone East Public School has been actively participating in this campaign by displaying
a “Litter! You know it’s wrong,” banner at the Brabyn St fence, some classroom activities and
promoting at lunch & recess time.
Now it’s parents’ turn to sign up for the anti-littering pledge to show our care of the environment.
Please complete the individual pledge online by visiting: http://www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/nolitterineastwood and put
(DEPC one child’s name/class) next to your name so we can arrange a car rubbish bag to be picked up at school
as a way to say thank you for supporting this project.

Please remember we are in the summer menu for Term 4 2014 and Term 1 2015. If you do not have a current copy
come and see us to get one. Please note some items have been deleted, Sushi is now available on Tuesday and
Friday and some items have changed day of availability. Also note that sushi flavours are: chicken teriyaki, beef
teriyaki, tuna & cucumber and vegetarian.
Please make sure your orders are in before 9.30am Tuesday and 9.00am Friday as these are made off site and
orders need to go in as early as possible.

Ryde Secondary College will be conducting College tours throughout the year as follows:

Tours run for approximately an hour and a half starting from the school office. Enter via Malvina Street gate and

Come play football/soccer with Eastwood St
T20 Blast Cricket is coming to Ryde!
This fun filled programme, delivered by accredited coaches, is designed for boys
and girls aged 7-12 (Years 2 to 6). Over the eight-week program, up to 80 kids
play simultaneous games of T20 Cricket at the one venue. With only eight
players per team, all participants have greater involvement in the game. T20
Blast games are much shorter than traditional games of cricket, with each
session lasting between 60 and 75 minutes. The matches are played on a
smaller field than regular cricket matches, allowing parents to get close to all the action. While waiting to bat, children
take part in a Skills Zone, where games and activities help to develop vital cricket skills. The format allows parents and
trained coaches to interact with participants throughout, ensuring the skills of the game are taught in an explosive,
action-packed hour. Kids bat, bowl, field and keep wickets, experiencing all aspects of cricket.
All participants receive a pack that includes a Milo T20 Blast T-shirt, KFC T20 Big Bash League team cap, Milo
giveaways and other KFC T20 Big Bash League promotional items, setting them up for a full summer of cricket
participation and support.
All sessions are at Holy Cross College, Frank St Ryde, on Thursday afternoons. The dates are:
November 20, 27, December 4 and 11, February 5, 12, 19 and 26. The cost of the programme is

Matilda the Musical was officially launched in Sydney on the 14 October. The preliminary round of childrens
