The evaluators were Ann Green and Nicole Jagger who spent three days with us this week. They visited every classroom from Reception to Year 5. They met with year level team teachers and groups of students. Yesterday they also spent time with parents and Governing Council members. It has been a wonderful opportunity for us all to evaluate the Primary Years Program and how it operates at Linden Park. We have learnt a great deal from them also as very experienced Primary Years practitioners and evaluators. We will provide further detail in the near future after we receive their findings and recommendations. The year two camp has been a big success despite the warm conditions. The students had a fantastic time as can be seen on the front cover of this newsletter. A big thank you to all the teachers but particularly Annie who stayed for the whole camp whilst Liz and Di were on leave. The Year 7 Personal Interest Project Expo held on Wednesday night was another huge success. The students were excited at being able to share their learning. Most impressed, I believe, were the parents. As I walked around the vast range of displays the obvious enthusiasm from the parents was infectious. Through the Expo the students were able to speak confidently and articulately about their research and the end products were amazing. A great effort by the Year 7 teaching team and the students. You may have noticed some very young people in the Early Years yard lately on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. We have introduced an ’Open to Play’ session for next year’s new Reception students. This is to get them used to our playground and their new surroundings in preparation for their starting school in 2015. Parents accompany the children on these visits as they spend time familiarising themselves with their new surroundings. Next year will be the first year that we have a very large group of Reception students commencing school as a result of the ’Same First Day Policy’ introduced by DECD this year. We have approximately 115 young students joining us next year meaning that we have had to modify our normal transition process. We are not alone here; on speaking with other schools I find that they too are developing a range of orientation and transition visits. Next Friday is the Primary Years Sports Day. Always a highlight on the school calendar, please save the date if you are able to join us. It would be great to see you!
