24 October 2014 – 30 Tishrei NEWSLETTER NO. 31/14 MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ROSH YESHIVA DARKENU PARSHAT NOACH “DARKENU” – The Yeshiva Way! Teaching and Preaching!!! Is it as easy as it looks??? Noach was instructed to build the Teiva in order to survive the flood. It was a job that would take 120 years – the Biblical life span. Not that Hashem could not save Noach and his family without this. The commentators explain that the ark building exercise was not just to create the means to survive the flood but rather, it was an educational imperative. Hashem wished Noach to be seen to be preparing for a flood, to inform and to inspire others to Teshuva. Education is not just about preaching and teaching – it’s about doing, and doing visibly. It’s about having the courage to provoke questions and waiting for those questions rather than pre-empting them. Apparently Noach’s educational message failed. It seems that not even one person joined his effort. Rabbi Kaminetzky explains that Noach himself (at some level) was not really expecting the deluge. He knew it was coming, but it wasn’t real. Perhaps that is why he couldn’t convince anyone else. Above all, the way to another person’s heart is through your own heart. We need to ‘be there’ – to really feel, not just to understand – our message. Ultimately people don’t’ respond to messages – they respond largely to people. When we are real, it’s catchy! CORE VALUES OF YESHIVA COLLEGE ● Ahavat Hashem – nurturing a meaningful relationship with Hashem. ● Commitment to Halacha – striving to live according to Torah values. ● Talmud Torah – pursuit of Torah learning. ● Derech Eretz – approaching all endeavours with responsibility and integrity. ● Gemillut Chassadim – respect, sensitivity, tolerance and concern for individuals and community. A social responsibility towards society. ● Love of Eretz Yisrael (Land of Israel) and appreciation of the State of Israel. 24 October – 30 Tishrei 3 MENAHEL’S MICHTAV This week during a shiur kelali for the entire Boys’ High (besides Matrics who have just started FINALS – behatzlachah!!!!!!!! – more about them later) we discussed the significance of Yeshiva College students signing up for the Big Shabbat when most of us already keep Shabbat. The avenue we took was Shabbat has so many levels of observance that everyone can sign up to take their Shabbat experience to a higher level and in doing so “taste Heaven already on Earth!”. The lessons we learnt were from the Navi Yishayahu who maps out the path to this terrestrial experience of otherworldly bliss through the acronym W.O.K.T. (WALK – differently from the way we chase our mundane needs during the week; ONEG – enjoy the Shabbat experience; KAVOD – honour Shabbat by preparing thoroughly for it; TALK – about different things than you do during the week). One who observes Shabbat in terms of the forbidden “melachot” invariably will find plenty ways of enhancing their “Shemirat Shabbat” in the four areas described by the Navi! And so – on the topic of the “Big Shabbat” – only a “Big Menahel’s Michtav” will do it justice (besides which so much has happened over the past few weeks – almost feels like the last newsletter was last year! LL!!!). Wrapping up last term, after almost 2 years of planning it became public knowledge that the Grade 10 class has a special unit that has been commissioned by the SADF (South African Defence Force) to train in preparation for an Alien invasion (wasn’t there a movie about that?). Lasertag might seem like lots of fun, an awesome workout and team-building experience – but if you see it become a “weekly school extramural” – please be advised to “read between the lines”! One of our Grade 10 Students, Shmuel David Goldberg (code name “the Grand Master”) participated in the World Junior Chess Competition held in Durban a few days prior. Out of the one thousand best junior Chess players in the World, Shmuel David came 30th in has age group – a remarkable achievement!!! – but wait: Chess, the master game of strategy, would be the perfect way to take Alien Defence to a new level. Is a coordinated international effort under way??? We all know that the IDF is in a league of its own when it comes to defence, and employing their “Divine Superweapon”, the week of GADNA training that Kfar undergo perhaps is much more than we think!? In any event – it’s a costly undertaking (an a most worthwhile investment in the future of the Jewish People along with Humanity) – so we commend the Grade 10’s and parents for their recent fund-raising efforts at their 2nd Jumble Sale! 24 October – 30 Tishrei 4 Quality Service of quality products!!! At the beginning of the term we welcomed back the TiP Tour from an incredible fun-packed holiday at the Natal Coast where they uplifted the Jewish Community of Izinga (please see the following article – shkoyach to Saul Marks for writing it it!). A huge shkoyach to Gilad, YiD, Kidwell and the students who went on tour!!! At the same time we welcomed back Yonatan Ovad, Eitan Kabatznik & Joseph Greenstein, the 3rd team of “shlichim” we sent to outlying communities to enhance their High Holiday Season. YiD helps the 2nd team of Yamim Nora’im Shlichim along their way… It was not only TiP Tour & our Shlichim who spread the light & happiness of the Chagim. After a surprise cake to congratulate their Holistic Educator Rav Alon Friedman for his appointment as Assistant Rav to the Rosh Yeshiva in the Glenhazel Yeshiva College Shul… (MAZAL TOV!!!)… 24 October – 30 Tishrei 5 … the Grade 7 students – backed by the awesome drive of our other Holistic Educator Rav Wineberg, went on a mission to bring the Spirit of Sukkot to the Jewish Students of Crawford Sandton. This was followed by a Sukkah Party in Rav Wineberg’s “temporary abode” for the Grade 7’s. Shkoyach HaRav!!! The most recent “Middah-of-the-Month” has been iCare. We ended the term with a combined picnic breakfast on the High School lawn where Mesivta showed their “iCare” for Tichon by setting up breakfast and Tichon in turn showed their “iCare” for the ground staff by clearing up afterwards. We were treated to an almost flash-mob like appearance of our YCBHS choir who treated us to a live performance of their “Big Shabbat Dror Yikra” piece that went viral after we screened it at Shiur Kelali this week! 24 October – 30 Tishrei 6 YaChad take a lyrical stand… Back to the Matrics… under the pressure of your finals – when you need a moment to take a break & reflect on some recent awesome fun, have a look at some “Matric Farewell Pics” Not working…? The knowledge of who the real Head Boy of 2014 is sure to put a smile on your face! 24 October – 30 Tishrei 7 And for extra measure, the Hypnotism Show (who do we thank more: Darren Bass or the hypnotised???) A huge shkoyach to Alon Shulman’s quick thinking & lightening-reflex response that led to the rescue of “Awesome Aaron” as the effects of Hypnosis relaxed him “just a bit too much”!!! When all else fails – there’s always gotta-be-a-selfie to save the day! (I may have mentioned this before – the only time iCare for a selfie is when the Matric Boys propose (taken at the iCare picnic)… …Smile!!! Wishing all the Matrics so much success!!! Chodesh Tov and a very Big Shabbat Sha-lom, Ilan Raanan 24 October – 30 Tishrei 8 TIP TOUR 2014 (With thanks to Saul Marks for compiling this report!) Tip Tour 2014 was an unbelievable once in a lifetime experience which I will remember for the rest of my life! 17 boys, 4 madrichim and 2 outstanding cooks left from the huge Joburg Jewish Community on Chol Hamoed Sukkot on route to the small new community of Izinga, in Umhalanga, Kwazulu Natal. These boys were in for 9 days of crazy activities, and a great Torah experience. We arrived at Izinga and put down our teffilin, luluvim and etrogim on the tables of the breathtaking shul. As Gilad Friedman said that it was amazing to see these empty tables and remarkable shul that was usually filled with our belongings everywhere. We straight away got started with go-karting and putt-putt on the Gateway roof. With sea-rafting and Ushaka still coming up we were in for a treat. Then a Segway tour around the Moses Mabhida Stadium and on the Durban beach front. Going on a sky car to the top of the Durban Stadium and seeing Durban from a bird’s eye-view. We went abseiling down a dam wall and built rafts at Shongweni Dam. Action soccer on the Gateway Roof was exhilarating. Meeting up with the Grade 10’s who went to the Durban Shul and having a hypnosis show was tons of fun. Hoshana Rabah Mishmar with our special guest Rabbi Schnerb was inspiring. Finally our main reason for being in Izinga arrived – Yom Tov – came in! We uplifted the small community of Izinga with our davening, leining and unbelievable singing. (We had 3 members of the YC choir with us). Simchat Torah was a vibe – we danced with the community and Rabbi Zekry. We made friends with the youth at Izinga and put smiles upon every congregants face. After uplifting and inspiring the community we left Izinga and spent our final night at Midmar Dam! We have come home with memories and bonds like we could never have imagined! 24 October – 30 Tishrei 9 YESHIVA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL MENAHELET’S MEMO Welcome back to term 4! I hope everybody had a wonderful break and that you are all ready and energised for the last push before school holidays! Over sukkot we had a wonderful Simchat Beit Ha’shoeva at my house. There were 70 girls, mountains of pizza (which were quickly demolished) and the most incredible Ruach. Yasher Koach to Michaela Levy and Raella Chernick for providing such professional entertainment and for creating an awesome vibe! 24 October – 30 Tishrei 10 This week the school has been busy gearing up for the Shabbos Project. On Wednesday everybody signed pledge cards and received their yellow laces. On Thursday the Grade 9’s and 11’s packed care packages to brighten up Shabbos for the people in the Old Age Home. The grade 7’s and grade 10’s decided to bring the Great Challah Bake to the ladies of the Old Age Home. It is still not clear who had more fun, our girls or their new adoptive Bobbas. Special thank you to Cheryl HH for coordinating all the fine details to make sure the programme happened. Finally, the school has been buzzing with the preparations for Rosh Chodesh. This month’s Rosh Chodesh is powered by the grade 8 girls. We have had glimpses of art projects, choir practices and dance rehearsals and we are so excited to see the finished product! Happy Birthday to all the October Girls who had birthdays over the holidays: Kayla Tobiansky, Sera Shor, Liat Biddle, Jessica Goldblatt and Michaela Kwasnik. Wishing you all a wonderful Shabbos! Enjoy Keeping It Together! CHANA MEIRA KATZ Menahelet 24 October – 30 Tishrei 11 24 October – 30 Tishrei 12 COUNSELLORS’ CORNER I CARE FOR OTHERS Are You Teaching Your Daughter to Be a Mean Girl? One night, during my senior year of high school, I received a text message from a group of girls telling me I was fat and needed to lose weight. At the time I felt bad and embarrassed for them. It honestly stunned me that people could be so downright mean and insecure. Now that I am married with a daughter of my own, my thoughts about it have slightly shifted. I find myself wondering about those girls' moms. Where were they? And why didn't they teach their daughters to be kind? Years later, I ran into one of those girls at the store. We both had our young daughters with us. I didn't have ill feelings toward her and honestly assumed that we had both moved past the petty immaturity that tends to accompany those high school relationships. We were both wives and mothers now. Surely things that happened then would seem silly now -- even laughable. So, in passing, I said hello. Nothing. With a cold glance, and without a word, she walked away. I was stunned. It was at that moment, I realized two things: 1. Mean girls grow up to be mean moms. 2. Little girls learn from their moms how to be mean girls. This "mean girl" gene doesn't come on intentionally. I don't think there are many people who pride themselves on being mean. However, we live in a technology-driven world that, in my opinion, breeds competitive feelings and makes that mean behavior all too common. Social media has created an atmosphere where people feel entitled to peek in on every aspect of your life. People feel entitled to say whatever they want. I cannot tell you how many times I have observed mothers, via social media, being downright nasty to one another about anything and everything. It is shocking and sad. But if it starts with us, it has to end with us. It's our responsibility, as mothers, to do everything in our power to make sure we aren't (even unknowingly) raising mean girls. 24 October – 30 Tishrei 13 Be aware of yourself. Being a teacher, I can assure you that your children hear you. (And often quote you.) They observe you. They mimic you. They hear you tell your husband how that woman on Facebook "is so full of herself." They listen when you are on the phone with your girlfriend gossiping about the mom down the street. They even take in the critical things you say about your own appearance. They hear you. And then they become a product of everything they hear -- a product of you. Teach them how to give a compliment. Doesn't this seem so simple? Complimenting is a lost art. We live in a self-centered society, and it shows. By teaching your children how to compliment others (and themselves), you are encouraging them to find things they like about other people. Encourage positive conversation. I am a firm believer that when we start being pessimistic and negative, we train our brains to automatically think that way. By encouraging and participating in positive conversations with our daughters, we can help train them to think in an optimistic way. It's hard to be mean when you see life and see others in a positive light. Teach them to root for the underdog. I have my mom to thank for this life lesson. When we were growing up, my mom would always remind us to "root/cheer/vote for the underdog." Whether it was during student council elections, team tryouts or just a regular day, she would always say that to us as we got out of the car. Promoting this message teaches children to be aware of others. It will teach them kindness and empathy. And think of it this way: At some point in time, we will all be the underdog. How would you want to be treated? Praise niceness. Nice is a simple world. So simple, its powerful meaning often goes unnoticed. Growing up, "Because Nice Matters" was our family motto. My mom plastered the phrase all around the house, and now I have done the same. Being nice does matter. We need to make kindness a conscious lesson. We need to compliment our daughters when they demonstrate kindness. In a world that values looks, achievements, accomplishments and awards, let your home value kindness. I hope one day, if I run into that high school acquaintance again, she will accept the smile I throw her way. But even if she doesn't, I'm just going to keep on smiling. After all, nobody is perfect. But everyone can be nice. I hope you all had a good Chag and good rest! Please take note of the following information: 1. School Uniform You are all aware by now what the school uniform regulations are for Yeshiva College Primary School. The rules are two-fold: a) b) The correct school uniform; The level of modesty according to our Torah Ethos With regards to the correct school uniform, the proper items are available from Stadium Sports. Girls should wear white bobby socks with black shoes. No coloured hair accessories, jewellery or nail polish will be allowed. The boys must wear black or navy yarmulkes and no jewellery/accessories. In connection to point b) our school rules are that all boys should wear yarmulkes & Tzitzit (including during sports) and girls, the sleeves should reach the elbows and the skirts should cover the knees while seated. I implore the parent body to follow these guidelines. It is most uncomfortable to single out a child about the level of tzniut. However, if children do not comply with this school rule, boys and girls will be sent to the office and a phone call to home will be made to rectify the issue immediately. 2 BIRTHDAY PARTIES Although birthday parties are a private concern, they do reflect on the ethos of Yeshiva College! Families choose Yeshiva College for the unique offering that we give. A Halachic approach based on the Torah laws and values are of paramount importance to us. This is combined with excellence in General Studies, thus allowing all children to be integral citizens of society. It is imperative that all families are comfortable within our system, therefore, when planning your birthday parties for your children, please keep the following in mind: i) Time of party – e.g. a Saturday night party for a Grade 2 would be deemed inappropriate; ii) Boys should invite boys only iii) Girls should invite girls only iv) In general, all themes should be carefully considered v) Theme of party – if showing a movie, it should be carefully screened and the parental guidance and recommendation of age should be followed 24 October – 30 Tishrei 16 YESHIVA COLLEGE PRIMARY SCHOOL (Cont.) The term started with the arrival of eggs in incubators in both schools. The children's excitement was almost tangible and, at any given moment, little groups of children could be seen clustered around the incubators waiting patiently for the first crack to appear and a little beak to emerge. The activity began with a talk to the children about the eggs and concluded with a talk about the chickens. The children will be given the opportunity to hold the gorgeous fluffy chicks which, of course, is one of the highlights of the activity. This miracle of creation never ceases to amaze us and the delight on the children's faces as the chicks emerge is so special in itself. Our Big Challah Bake in which the Nursery School and Grade R children all joined to make challah simultaneously was an incredible event. Imagine tables and tables of young children, in special aprons, kneading, plaiting, basting dough; choosing a filling; chatting and music playing and you have the Yeshiva College Nursery School/Grade R Big Challah Bake! Not to be left out, the Playschool also baked challah as part of our participation in the Big Shabbos project. We hope you enjoy the material sent home with the children which captures the essence of Shabbos. TALK: PRO-SOCIAL SKILLS: REMINDER On Wednesday 29 October at 7.45 pm in the Girls' Beit Midrash (building next to the Primary School hall), the presentation of the Pro-Social Skills programme, that will be introduced into the Nursery School and Grade R, will take place.
