YEAR 12 VISUAL ARTS Assessment Task 1b: Critical and Historical Studies IN CLASS ESSAY Topic: Case Study 1: IDENTITY Case Study 2: LESS IS MORE Weight: 10% Date of Task: Term 4 Week 10 2014 Type of Task: In Class Essay Marks: 25 Outcomes to be Assessed: H7, H8, H9, H10 Task Description: Essay to be written in class under exam conditions. No notes allowed. Choose one of the following: “Identity is shaped by cultural context.” Discuss how this concept is reflected in the work of a range of artists. Or ‘Contemporary architects are admired for their imagination, virtuosity and creative use of materials.’ Evaluate this statement with reference to at least two architects or architectural firms and examples of their work. Strategies for writing your Essay: 1. Understand the demands of the question – Most statements and /or questions will contain key words telling you what you are expected to do. You MUST address this in your response. 2. Introduction – this establishes the tone of the essay and is where you need to be stating your “thesis”, basically you are expanding on the question. You are also leading the reader into the body of your essay. Avoid writing general information that conveys no important message. 3. Topic Sentences – Develop your paragraphs around certain points or Topic Sentences (e.g. Artists practice, use of colour, background influences, etc). These help to organize your essay and assist the reader moving through from point to point. The key aspect of a paragraph is usually contained within a single sentence. 4. Use connective words or phrases - these are used at the beginning of each paragraph and help the connection between them. They help the reader in moving from one point to another. E.g. meanwhile, therefore, however, similarly, in other words, likewise, consequently, etc. 5. Conclusions - always make sure it agrees with your initial idea and DON’T introduce any new information. Also make it a normal length paragraph, don’t just run out of ideas and leave it unresolved. If you write the essay (or essay plan) in plenty of time, give your teacher a look at it so they can give you some feedback before the actual assessment task date. MISSED TASK POLICY If you are sick and cannot attend school to sit for and complete a formal assessment task or examination, you must submit to the relevant Head Teacher of this course on the first day that you return to school: a sickness / misadventure declaration form a copy of your supporting documentation (e.g. doctors certificate and/or letter from parent) You will need to arrange and alternative date/time with the Head Teacher of the Faculty and your classroom teacher to sit the task. EXTENSIONS If you believe that you have a valid reason for an extension of time, you must apply to the Head Teacher of the faculty for an extension BEFORE THE DATE of the EXAM/TEST.
