Web 1.0: First generation Web




13
First generation of the web (hence, 1.0)
What is the earliest memory of the Web you
have?
Web 1.0 allowed for the creation of Web sites
Web sites that provide information that users
receive passively (a bit like reading books)
Did you know…?
“Web 2.0” officially became the
millionth word in the English
language on June 10th, 2009.
Have you ever used the term in
conversation?

How is XML different from HTML?
What Web 2.0 technologies did you see?
What challenges are presented by Web
2.0?
What does it mean that “we are the web”?
What is a mashup? Why is Flickr Maps a
mashup?

XML describes content, not the format
(structure separate from content)
YouTube (video), Flickr, Blogs, Tags
(del.icio.us)
Legitimacy, copyright, privacy
“crowd-sourced content”
Two types of data mashed together to
create new value
Web 2.0: Book Definition
“Web 2.0 is a loose collection of
information technologies and
applications, and of the Web sites
that use them.” – Tim O’Reilly

Tagging
20
Tagging


21
A tag is a keyword that describes
info/website/article – helps people search for
information – centralizes information
More people who tag the information, the
more likely that site or info will be found
Folksonomy
User generated classifications used to
categorize web pages, photos, videos &
other web content using tags.
-- Basically, a classification system developed
by users
22
Blogging
23
Blogging



24 
Personal website in which the creator
expresses opinion
People blog about vacation, events in life that
are important to them, or really boring events
that no one cares about aside from them –
sound egotistical? – danger of saying what
you think?
People can share info quickly, tracks people’s
opinions with comments
Businesses with blogs get publicity
Wikis
25
Wikis





26
Platform on which people can post material
quickly without difficulty
Would you contribute? Might change info
Might not be effective source to cite
Encourages collaboration – people post info
and others can modify it
Would allow company to discuss problems,
deal with issues – info about company
problems/solutions
Advantages & Disadvantages of Wikis


Quick info
Allows collaboration


27
Info integrity (might
be wrong)

Really Simple Syndication (RSS)
28
Really Simple Syndication





29
Technology that allows for the transfer of data to another device
as updates
RSS allows people’s work to be collected and distributed
Business could use to save employees’ time searching for
websites (news, etc.) – also send updates about what
employees’ are doing so business knows
Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content
automatically.
Wikipedia says: RSS is a family of web feed formats used to
publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news
headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format (don’t
worry about the technological aspect, just know what it does)
Podcasts and Videocasts
30
Podcasts and Videocasts




31
Share info instantly through video, social
interaction - .99? Free??
If free, more people would use it… should be
free
Post opinions about the podcasts/videocasts,
creator can modify content based on opinions
Easier way to pass info throughout the
company about products, company itself, etc.
Websites that use Web 2.0 Technology




Social Networking (Facebook, MySpace,
Twitter, YouTube)
Aggregators (Digg, Technorati)
Mashups (Flickr Maps)
Web sites have evolved!

2.
3.
4.
33
What is the purpose of the technology?
How does the technology incorporate “user
participation, social interaction, and
collaboration?”
If you were in charge of a company, how
would you use the technology, and why?
How could you use it as an entrepreneur?
