Providing classroom support to teachers and students is a privilege and a great responsibility. Learn to assist in
effective planning, teach literacy, language and numeracy skills, and how to engage with students. Your new skills
will help you become a major influencer in the lives of children in a positive way.
Course details
If you have a Certificate III in Education Support, then why not take the next step in your professional development
and enrol in the Certificate IV course. Learn additional skills in literacy and numeracy, how to support students with
disabilities and learning difficulties, working with culturally-diverse clients, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
education, and industrial requirements.
As a Teacher Aide, you may be employed in a variety of community education settings including public and
independent schools. These may include special schools catering for children with disabilities, or after school care
facilities.

Career prospects:
Work as a Teacher Aide, School Officer or Education Support Worker in any government, church or independent
primary or secondary school, environmental education centres, schools of distance education, community schools,
special education units and schools and outside school hours care facilities.
Some job roles may require tasks to be performed with a moderate level of autonomy and/or the provision of
supervision/leadership to other staff/volunteers.
The Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment recognises this qualification in its salary
structure for teacher aides. Formal qualifications may lead to additional salary increments.
Hours of study:
Study is structured into fixed intakes which have set durations (completion date is 10 weeks from the
commencement date of each intake). Study can be commenced at the beginning of each intake, with dates as
follows:
January:
Study duration: 27/01/2015 - 02/04/2015
Status: open for enrolment
Enrolment close date: 23 January 2015
Students will be able to access the online course content from the first day of each intake.
Please note that you must be enrolled in order to access the online learning materials.
There are 8 clusters and assessments are due in Week 2 and Week 8 for each cluster. You will be expected to
commit to a minimum of 5 hours of study per week for each cluster of units to successfully complete your study
and Vocational Placement of 1 day per week for Volunteers only.
Resources required:
Students will be required to purchase Supporting Education, the Teaching Assistant's Handbook, written by Karen
Kearns, published by Pearson.

Additional Learning Materials will be available online. Students will need Internet access, computer access to
complete word documents, excel and Power Point.

Entry requirements
This qualification has no formal entry criteria however TAFE Queensland Brisbane has the following selection
criteria:
1. Successful completion of Year 10 in the Australian secondary school system or its equivalent
OR
2. Mature age (over 18 years)
3. Sound levels of literacy and numeracy are essential for successful completion of this qualification.
If you’re under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.
Vocational Placement Requirements
All students are required to have a Blue Card (Suitability to Work with Children) prior to undertaking Vocational
Placement. For further information go to http://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au.
It is compulsory that all students are in a school placement while studying this qualification. All students are
required to complete a mandatory 100 hours of placement in a school either as a Volunteer or Employed Teacher
Aide.
Students who are not employed as Teacher Aides are required to enrol in 'Vocational Placement VPC200' and
attend Vocational Placement at a school for the duration of their studies. It is recommended that you attend for one
day per week. Volunteer students must not exceed 200 hours of training.
Employed Teacher Aides must enrol in 'Work in Schools' unit.
