RABBI’S CHANUKAH MESSAGE
Our Talmud teaches us that we are not rewarded for our Mitzvot in this world(‘S’char Mitzvah b’hai almah lecha’). The performance of our deeds is
registered on Hashem’s score card and when our Earthly journey is completed,
the Almighty attends to rewarding us in accordance to our mitzvot and
behavior. The reward is far greater than we can imagine and if we believe in
an all loving G-d, we have no reason to doubt the certainty of this teaching.
Nevertheless, there are rewards and blessings in life that G-d provides us and it is our duty to
identify them and be grateful to Him for bestowing them upon us. In the last chapter of the
Talmud of Brachot, we learn of many blessings to be recited at unique experiences in our
lives. The requirement to recite blessings at joyous occasions and at special places permits us
to observe the gifts showered upon us by G-d which otherwise go unnoticed. Although the
rewards for our mitzvot are reserved for the Afterlife, there are still many rewards that come
our way in this life. Some are from G-d and some are from friends. It is our responsibility to take
note of them, to be grateful for them and to be encouraged by them.
One special reward and gift that our Shul members experienced occurred on Simchat Torah
night. The powerful Ruach and happiness felt by all of us as we danced and sang throughout
the evening was wonderful and contagious. We tried to end the singing and dancing several
times but everyone wanted more. Our spirits were flying and our joy was genuine. As the time
was getting late, we began to return the Torah’s to the Ark. At that moment sixty students and
Rabbeim from our Yeshiva entered into our shul to join with us. The ‘TIME’ took a rest, and for
another 45 minutes we sang and danced and our joy was so magnified! It was a great! At
that moment in our life we were rewarded. As the singing became more intense and all of us
were celebrating the joy our Torah, it was as if we were rewarded by Hashem and He sent his
Mahlachim to join with us.
I can certainly say on behalf of Congregation Beth Sholom, how grateful we are to the
Yeshiva for providing us with such a bracha in our shul. I credit and thank the Rosh HaYeshivah
Rabbi Menachim Davidowitz, shlitah, Rabbi Baruch Davidowitz, Rabbi Daniel Goldstein, Rabbi
Shlomo Noble and all the Rabbeim, Kollel, and Talmidim for providing us with such a
wonderful gift of joy and Achdus, togetherness. Indeed, Hashem has many ways of rewarding
us in this world and in the Olam Habaah.
~Rabbi Shaya & Nechie Kilimnick and family
SIMCHA TREE
The Simcha Tree in our congregation is a most appropriate opportunity to permanently
extend the joyous milestones of life… and allow your simcha to branch out into the future.
‘Life has hope’ - birthdays, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, weddings and anniversaries—are
occasions that deserve to be inscribed into our people’s destiny… to reflect upon… to
remember our joy… For more information please call Shul office 473-1625.

THE HOLIDAYS OF 8
The most difficult period of the year for many, is the one we are currently in. We are in a time, devoid of
any holidays and opportunities to practice that which is unique to Judaism. We have just experienced
the most intense spiritual period of the year. We prayed on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we were
surrounded by Mitzvot on Sukkot and we danced with great joy on Simchat Torah. The holiday season
contained the full array of Jewish living, and all of a sudden we go cold Turkey, a standstill, we enter
the month of Cheshvan. The quick transition from constant movement to being still would not be
advised by any personal trainer. We know that after an intense run, you maybe jog, then walk and
make sure you have a post run stretch. To just stop all together is not healthy, if you do that you will be
aching for days, and for the Jewish spirit, it may feel lost for days, maybe even weeks.
To address this concern, it is important to understand our time period a little differently, and this has to
do with being aware of the number 8. We are surrounded and within a number 8. The holiday of Sukkot
has 8 days and the final day is Shemini Atzeret the 8th day, which is the completion of the holiday. If you
heard the Rabbi’s sermon on Shemini Atzeret, you learnt that it is the 8th holiday since Pesach. The next
holiday which we will celebrate is Chanukah, the 8 days where we continue to add light into our lives
by lighting more candles each night. That which is unique about our celebration is that we conclude
Chanukah by lighting 8 candles which is one more than the 7 candles which were lit on the Menorah in
the Holy Temple.
These two holidays are marked by the number 8, and it just so happens that the amount of time
between the two holidays is also marked by the number 8 as there are a little more than 8 weeks
between Sukkot and Chanukah. This can mean two things. Either we wait a really long time before we
can celebrate again, or we can utilize these 8 weeks as a period of transformation. These 8 weeks are
an opportunity to celebrate a different type of holiday, one which is defined by our commitment to the
study of Torah, performance of Mitzvot, and one which is all about elevating the day to day motions of
life. We are given the opportunity to narrow the gap between Sukkot and Chanukah, to be the bridge
which defines holidays not only as dates marked on a calendar, but as moments used to elevate our
actions.
In truth, this is the time when we can live up to the promise which we pledged to ourselves when we
wished all a Shana Tova, and sang Avinu Malkaynu and Ki Anu Amecha. This is the time when we can
live up to the challenge and see how far we have come. This is the time when we can celebrate a
longer holiday of 8 which defines us as people and allows our soul to burn bright and possibly transcend
the normal pattern of 7.
May we all Bi’Ezrat Hashem have the strength to commit ourselves to the Torah, Mitzvot and larger
community. Even as the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, let us add our own light and
warmth to these 8 weeks. If we are
able to make this period of the year
into a holiday, then we will reach the
greatest celebration when we
welcome the holiday of Chanukah
and light the candles of our
Menorah.
Hatzlacha,
~Rabbi Avi Kilimnick

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
KOL NIDRE ADDRESS
Good Yom Tov.
On behalf of the board, if you feel like we have done anything at any point to
offend you, it was not our intention. Please forgive us.
As I’m sure you know, no event is more important to this shul than the Ambassadors of Humanity Dinner. Please be on hand to honor five well deserving honorees, Bruce and Karen Zivan for
their work with Israel, Dr. Nina Shor for her work within our community, and Mort (the anchor of
our daily minyan) and Chana Z’L Issacs, at this year’s AOH Dinner on November 9th. Invitations
have gone out, so please keep an eye out for yours.
AOH is our number one fundraiser. Speaking of our finances, I’m happy to report that thanks
to the hard work and efforts of the VP of Finance, Dr. Yosef Kiliminick, our budget is balanced.
However, as announced at the Annual Meeting, we are expecting to be at a deficit this year,
so we really need all your help to avoid it.
There are maintenance requirements, capital expenditures, and cleaning responsibilities that
require our attention. One easy way that you can help us is by paying your dues, which greatly contributes to the overall well-being of Beth Sholom. Another way is through donations.
We are always looking for volunteers as well. Thank you to Michele Sadik and Sharon Gray for
stepping up to be Youth Co-Chairs. Thank you to Marjorie Montag and Kathye Simon for stepping up to be Sisterhood Co-Chairs.
You do not have to be on the board to serve on, or even chair,
committees. I have many ideas, but I need people to step up
and offer their help!
Speaking of helping hands, the hands of Bob David in both a
literal and figurative sense are involved in everything related to
Congregation Beth Sholom. We all owe him a huge yasher
koach for everything he does, which I won’t enumerate right
now, since it will probably take until N’eliah!
We’ve had another great year with our 2 Rabbis. Rabbi Shaya
Kilimnick and Rabbi Avi Kiliminick both go above and beyond
for our shul. They both lend their vocal talents and inspiring messages to our minyanim. They are our spiritual leaders. They excel
at lifecycle events. We are so lucky to have them here.
I’m sure that over the next 24 hours, with their words of wisdom
and cantorial tones, the Dynamic Duo of Kilimnick and Kilimnick
will lead us to a signed, sealed, and delivered inscription into
the Book of Life, 5775th Edition.
G’mar Chatima Tovah!

HOLIDAY THANK YOUS
Our High Holiday services and Sukkot celebration were rewarding, spiritually
motivating and greatly appreciated this year at Beth Sholom. We express
our gratitude to the many who assisted in the preparations, planning making
the holidays so meaningful for all of us.
We are thankful for all the assistance that Bob David, Karen Fiege and Alicia
provided us over the past few months in preparation of the holidays. They all
assisted everyone in the seat selection for the holidays and made sure that
all holiday finances and needs were taken care of.
A special word of thanks to our custodian Michael Wurzer, whose dedication and hard work made sure that our shul building was arranged for the
attendance of worshipers. Michael also provided us with the security during
the holidays and his kindness was always appreciated.
We are also grateful to the Rochester Police Force and especially to Officer
Michelle Velez and the several Officers who provided us surveillance, security and safety during the Yomim Noraim.
Many people contributed time and effort to help ensure a pleasant holiday
atmosphere: A special Thank you to:
Our Gabbaim, Dr. Yosef Kilimnick and Steve Schwartz, who coordinated the
services with our Rabbis and distributed the Torah Honors with great dignity.
Rabbi Kilimnick for leading the Shacharis on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
and for the sounding of the Shofar, and to Dr. Dobkowski for serving as the
‘Makrei’.
A Special YASHER KOACH to Rabbi Avi Kilimnick, leading the Davening for
the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with such inspiration.
Rabbi Dovid Isaacs for the leading the pre-Shacharis service (P’Sukai D’Zimra) on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
Dr. Yosef Kilimnick for leading the Mincha on Yom Kippur and for the Reading of Kohelet on Chol Hamoed Sukkot.
Sharon Gray Sherin, Kathye Simon Baruch and Kim Holtzman for organizing
all the Junior Congregation services; To Leana Beer and Esti Kilimnick and to
all the leaders and baby sitters.
A great Yasher Koach to all the above!
SUKKOT 2014
First we are thankful that the weather cooperated with our celebration of
the Chag. All of our Yom Tov meals were able to be enjoyed in our sukkah
and although it rained during parts of the days, the sukkah was ready to be
used by meal time. This year we were able to enjoy our shul’s Sukkah on
both days , Shabbos and had a wonderful Sukkot Holiday. The holiday was
beautiful at our shul and services were well attended.
It is always a thrill to observe the many who participated in the Hakafot during the Hoshanahs. There were over 90 men and children who participated
in the Hakafa, circuiting the shul with arba minim in hand. It was inspirational
and beautiful as the congregation participated with the tefillot.
Congregation Beth Sholom, Rochester, New York
All the Lulavim and Etrogim were prepared and distributed properly. We
thank Yosef and Keith for transporting all the sets from Queens NY; to Rabbi Avi for assembling the Lulavim and Etrogim and for providing the shul
with the willows for Hoshanah Rabbah.
We are also thankful to have had a beautiful Sukkot Kiddush in our main
and children’s Sukkah. We want to thank the Goldberg family, for sponsoring the Kiddush in the main Sukkah on the first day in memory of their parents, Ruth and Nathan Goldberg; and to the Schreiber family for cosponsoring the Kiddush the second day in memory of Madeleine’s father
Sidney Brickman;
Many remarked about the new Schach we purchased this year. We thank
Bob David, Ray Cherney, Paul Usdane, Keith Newman, Jonathan Sadik,
Menachem Kaiserberg and David Wettenstein for their assistance in putting it up; and a continued thanks to the Yekutiel family who donated the
large Ushpizin and Ushpizot panels which beautifully enhanced our Sukkah.
We also thank the Suzie & Yosef for sponsoring the refreshments in the children’s Sukkah Kiddush on the first two days of the Chag.We also thank all
the families who provided our Sr. NCSY and Jr. NCSY groups with hospitality
and food for their annual Sukkah hopping. We are grateful to the volunteers of our Men’s club who assisted in preparing the Sukkah with our new
‘schach’; To Bob David who made sure to provide a wonderful ‘In the Sukkah’ breakfast for the Minyan each day. To Malek's Bakery who donated
breads and pastries for the Simchat Torah Yom Tov.
A special ‘Yasher Koach’ to our NCSY advisors, who joined with us the last
days to enhance the Ruach and to be there for our youth.
A great Yasher Koach to all those who participated in the services this
year making it such a pleasant and rewarding Yom Tov.
SIMCHAT TORAH REVIEW
The last days of the Yom Tovim at our shul were exceptional. On Shemini
Atzteres, the Rabbi led Musaf Kedusha with a medley of all the High Holiday songs that we chant in our shul.
In the evening we had a successful beginning to Simchat Torah. We conducted a joyous celebration for our membership and children. This year’s
interactive puppet show was performed by our Rabbi, CM Nimchinsky, Eli
Katz (our NCSY advisors) and Ben Baruch. The children had a wonderful
time and were then given the traditional flags and chocolates provided
by our Sisterhood. There was also an abundance of candy dispensed to
our children and some were awarded stuffed Torah Toys. Once again
Yosef led us in his ‘In The Beginning Rap’ and Rabbi Avi kept the ‘ruach’
and dancing both in the evening and morning.
We were overwhelmed and blessed when the Talmidim, Rabbeim and
Roshei Yeshiva from TIUNY joined us for the ‘post’ last Hakafah. It was certainly the highlight of the evening and it gave us so much ‘chizuk’ and enhanced our achdus. From the depths of our heart we thank Rabbi Menachem Davidowitz and Rabbi Daniel Goldstein for making this happen.
Kol Hakavod to all. It will be a moment we will never forget and an experience of true simcha to build upon.

Congregation Beth Sholom, Rochester, New York
The evening continued with over 40 attendants as our NCSYers and advisors joined with Rabbi and Nechie for the
annual Simchat Torah Rabbi/NCSY Dinner. A special thanks to Camelia for preparing such a wonderful meal. A
special thanks to Ron & Rebecca Malek for donating all the bagels and to Wong from the Brighton Bakery for the
pastries.
The morning of Simchat Torah was enhanced by the early Kiddush given by Sheri and Robert Simon, in conjunction with their mother’s yahrzeits. We then returned to the sanctuary for the Hakafot, singing and dancing followed by the Aliyot to the Torah. All were moved by the beautiful blessings over the Torah by our children together with Uri Adel during the Kol Nearim. The Chatan Torah sponsored by Bob Frank, was once again rewarded to
our Rabbi, who was escorted under the chupah. Maurice Isaacson was then escorted under the chupah as he
was honored with Chatan Breishis sponsored by Bob David. The evening Ata Haraisa was sponsored by Steve
Schwartz and in the morning by Matt Rosenbaum. The Haftarah was sponsored by Yosef Kilimnick.
A special Yasher Koach to Steve Schwartz, for his layning of the conclusion and beginning of the Torah for the
Yom Tov. We are indebted to his dedication to our shul and his continued commitment to the Kriat Torah at Beth
Sholom.
The Yom Tov culminated with 130 people joining for the Simchat Torah luncheon. The food was plentiful and we
all were rewarded with the atmosphere of friendship and the ‘ruach’ of the holiday. We thank Sherri Simon and
her committee who prepared the seuda and all who were involved in making it such a wonderful Yom Tov to be
remembered. L’shanah Habaah B’rushalayim
HIGH HOLIDAY SERMON SYNOPSIS
The Rabbis imparted important High Holiday messages this year that were stimulating, challenging and relevant,
as we journey into our new year. Here are some of the themes that Rabbi and Rabbi Avi Kilimnick pointed out we
hope they are useful
On the First Day of Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Kilimnick’s explanation of the selected Torah Reading for the first day
and the sounds of the Shofar reminds of ‘mothers gone bad’. The failure of Hagar, Yishmael’s mother and Eym
Sisera set the path for for the misbehavior of their respective sons and their hatred for Yitzchak and the Jewish people respectively. Rabbi Avi’s teaching of
the Akeida shed new light on the story and its inherent lessons. The difference
of the Lamb on the mountain signifying passive service to G-d and the tangled
Ram in the bushes representing an action performed by Avraham are instructions for all who follow in the covenant of Avraham and Hashem.
In the Shabbos Shuva drasha, our Rabbi Avi spoke of the two types of Teshuva.
Teshuva me’Yirah and Teshuva me’Ahava. He emphasized the importance to
focus on the benefits of all of life’s goodness and to not only ‘Live Life’ but to
‘Love all that Hashem has provided for us in Life’
The night of Yom Kippur as we conducted our annual Israel Bond Appeal, we
spoke about Jewish Unity. We honored the evening by remembering our Jewish People in Israel who were under attack this summer with war. It is important
that we stand with them and participate in the building of Israel which they
protect with their lives. We reaffirmed our commitment to Israel and $65,000 of
Israel Bonds were purchased by the members of our congregation during the
Yom Kippur Israel Bond Appeal. On the holiest day of the Year we demonstrate
our conviction to be responsible to our Jewish people by supporting the development of our People’s Holy Land.
On Yom Kippur, prior to the Yizkor service Rabbi Kilimnick spoke about Hakarat
HaTov, Gratitude. Rabbi Kilimnick emphasized the importance of expressing
our appreciation to our family and friends and also reflecting upon the wonderful rewards we received by our loved ones who we remember at the Yizkor
service. We also gave recognition to the members of our shul have passed on
this previous year and our ‘gratitude’ to them. Rabbi Kilimnick emphasized that
in Beth Sholom you are never ‘invisible’. Everyone counts and is important to
our Kehillah.

SIYUM AT BETH SHOLOM
Last month our shul was honored to celebrate two events that highlighted our commitment to the
study and celebration Torah Learning. On Simchat Torah prior to our wonderful Luncheon, our
Rabbi led in the conclusion of Mesechta Brachot. For the past four years our members have met
each Shabbos afternoon prior to Mincha to study the Talmud and this was a special occasion for
the many who participated. A Mazel Tov to all who joined each Shabbos.
On the Shabbat of Parshat Noach , Rabbi Avi and Mr Morrie Isaacson concluded the two year
study of the Mishnayot in Seder Zeraim. This was a remarkable achievement and a special occasion . The intergenerational blessing that Rabbi Avi and Mr. Isaacson was an additional joy to behold. To the both of them and the many who also participate during the course of the year, we
wish all a Mazel Tov.
May all continue in their Torah learning achievements at Beth Sholom.
