At Extravaganza 2014 we were so grateful to be able to honor long time supporters of Catholic Education, John and Maryanne Post and Sophie McDevitt. I would like to thank our chairs Bill & Betsy Finneran, Rich & Lynnie Gregor, Terry & Rhonda Hanley, Mike & Kim Kolakowski and Chris Mancuso for all their efforts along with all of the volunteers, BC staff members and the entire community to help make this year’s event a great success. I am also very excited about our recent partnership with the Junior Reading Symphony Orchestra which will enhance the instrumental opportunities for our students and bring master classes to our Saints in the Spring. I am also very excited about the Shakespeare Will Power tour that is coming to visit on Oct. 22, to perform “Much Ado About Nothing” and provide theater workshops. On Oct. 16, Project Impact traveled to Ground Zero and a nearby church and offered Pope Benedict’s prayer when he visited the same sight. On October 15 we continued the tradition of an all inclusive senior retreat that included breakfast at Shady Maples, and a trip to the Sight and Sound Theater to see the production of Moses. Our sophomores and juniors took the PSATS on that same day and we are anxious to get the results to see who our future National Merit Scholars might be. Our Fall sports are off to a great start and we look forward to them competing for league, county, district, and state championships. Congratulations to our 2014 Homecoming King and Queen Ed Suriel & De’Jinar Green as wells as our newest members of the Hall of Fame. October 17 we will have our Ring Mass for Juniors and Oct. 24 will be our yearly Big Tailgate. October ends with Spirit Week filled with Theme Days, Mass, and BC Biggest Fan Day. November includes All Saints Day Mass at 9:00 am in the Franco Post Auditorium, Back Yard Brawl and Breakfast at Mancuso’s, fall Kairos, and the fall play on November 21/22 “Three Instances of Intrigue”. Our four pillars at Berks Catholic guide all that we do and as you can see October and November are certainly filled with God, Family, Academics, and Fun. God Bless you and your family. Go Saints! Sincerely, Tony Balistrere Principal 2014 Extravaganza Honorees FromtheChaplain Last week, in the midst of a very exciting Extravaganza, someone stopped me and said, “There is a great forward momentum here.” I responded, “Yes Bishop Barres, I agree.” Our bishop’s observation rings true in so many ways as our fourth year is well underway. I am personally grateful that the emotional appeal at this year’s Extravaganza was dedicated to the 21st century digital upgrades in the Franco-Post Auditorium. This is the space we use for the celebration of Holy Mass and the appropriate use of multimedia in communicating the Gospel in creative ways will help all of us to walk together as 21st century disciples. This technology, in addition to enhancing the learning environment at Berks Catholic, will help us proclaim the authentic Truth of our faith in an innovative manner. While student participation at Mass has increased so has attendance at the daily Masses in the school chapel, dedicated to Our Lady, Queen of All Saints. This year also brings a focused effort for promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Last week several of our students were invited to visit the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark New Jersey to attend services remembering Father Benedict Groeschel CFR, founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. There they met several young friars, sisters and dedicated young men and women of faith, as we were all inspired by the life of one of America’s greatest priests and servants of the poor. In the spiritual life of Berks Catholic we are looking forward to honoring the Class of 2016 at Ring Mass as well as the Celebration of All Saints Day on November 1st. This special day will begin with the celebration of the school’s Feast Day Mass at 9:00a.m. in the Auditorium. All members of the BC family are invited to attend before the important events later that day. This Advent we will honor the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with a special Holy Day Mass and we will gather again for prayers, readings and songs in English and Spanish on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. As we look forward to the great things to come in preparing to celebrate the Birth of Christ please mark you calendar for the annual celebration “Advent Vespers” at Sacred Heart Church in West Reading on Sunday December 14 at 4:00p.m. This service, revised for the first time in many years, takes us in prayer, Scripture and song to Bethlehem to remember newborn on of God as we recall the great events of our salvation. My thanks and gratitude to everyone who has made this year a great success as we look forward to walking with our Saints and so many great things yet to come. FromtheOfficeofCollege&Career Counseling SOME HELPFUL HINTS and POINTERS – For All Grades FROM COLLEGE COUNSELING COLLEGE ESSAYS: Mediocre or WOW?! From the Article and You Tube series: How To Improve Your Mediocre College Essay in 30 Minutes by Ethan Sawyer A mediocre extracurricular essay has a "so what" that sounds something like this: Being on the tennis team taught me many important lessons such as teamwork, leadership and working hard in whatever I do. I believe tennis has also helped me in my school-work since I have achieved straight A’s in the past two quarters and haven’t given up in school either. Why I think the story is not so good: It’s not really a story. It’s a reflection, which I think is best discussed in the conclusion. Why I think the “so what” is not so good: 1. Because it repeats what’s already been said. 2. Because the “insight” isn’t much of an insight. We could have guessed that those are the things you learned from tennis. Why? Because those are things everyone learns from tennis. A better extracurricular essay has a story that sounds something like this: “WHAM!” The ball hit me straight in the nose. I looked down on the court and saw blood. Lots of it. “Do you need a minute?” the umpire asked me. “No, I’m okay,” I said, pinching my nose and wiping the blood on my shorts. “Play on.” “You sure?” he asked. “I’m sure,” I said. “Let’s do this.” “Match point,” he announced to the crowd. My opponent tossed the ball up in the air to serve. Au contraire…. It turns out that your future happiness at work and at home has more to do with what you do at college than where you went to school, according to a recent poll by Gallup and Purdue University. FromtheHealthRoom 2014-2015 Flu Information According to current statistics, 1 in 5 people will catch the flu this year! In most cases, this may mean a few days to 2 weeks of symptoms. At their peak, symptoms may be severe. Recovery from the flu may be slow. The flu is highly contagious, and can be serious, even deadly, especially for older people and people with asthma, heart disease, diabetes, weakened immune system, and other chronic health problems. TIPS TO PREVENT THE FLU!! The Reading Hospital is holding free flu shot clinics: 1) For children ages 9 and older at the Muhlenberg Satellite Office at Tuckerton Road on Tuesday, January 15th from 5-8pm 2) For children ages 17 and under at the Children’s Health Center on Thursday January 17th from 5-7 pm. I will post any free flu clinics on the BC website as I get the information. If opportunity becomes available to offer vaccines at school I will also make that information available. You and your child should still, get a flu shot. Call your doctor or clinic. No matter what you are told: You can NOT catch the flu from a flu shot! The flu is contagious from the day before symptoms start until 5-10 days after symptoms start. It takes 1-2 weeks for the flu shot to work. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise and sleep pattern. If you have flu symptoms, call your doctor. Your doctor can advise you on treatment or a need to be seen by a health care provider for serious symptoms. Doctors and hospitals are advising people NOT to go directly to the Emergency Room. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Inn at Reading 5:30 to 10pm The price of the MORP is $45 per person. News from the Art Department To start off the year students in Mrs. Burt’s Art 2 class learned the importance of collaboration and how we as individuals artists can come together and create a singular piece of art through a non-objective mural that was meant to bring some life and color to the hall outside of the art room. The mural started in Art 2 as a long blank piece of black paper. The students were asked to stand in front of the paper and were given only red yellow and blue paint. They were told to start a free form painting and that they could only use circles or radiating designs. If they wanted to utilize other colors other than what they were given they were to mix their colors directly on the paper. And as a song played, all the students worked intently on their area. Just as students were getting comfortable with the process and their designs, the song ended the students were directed to move one space to the left, and pick up where their classmate left off, and this continued throughout the duration of the class. We did this for two days and watched how colors and designs overlapped over each other. Students were told to try to fill in all of the areas, white paint was also added into the mix on the second day. After three days of in class painting we all agreed that we were complete and our collaborative mural was a huge success. Mrs. Burt’s Art Awareness class also got a taste of collaborative artwork through their first art project. After learning about Renaissance art and how through the use of symbols and colors artists' incorporated a lot of themselves into their pieces, we looked at one of the most famous Renaissance art pieces, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. We took the idea of symbolism and how each individual aspect of the Sistine Chapel ceiling came together as a whole, and created our own small version of a ceiling painting. Students were told to come up with 10 symbols that represent themselves. They were then assigned a partner and as a duo they were to discuss their symbols and come up with a common symbol that would be the joining part of their designs. Students need to work very closely with their adjoining partner, but also needed to collaborate their design (colors, lines, shapes, etc.) with the people who were assigned to be above and below them on the ceiling. The finished project took up 12 ceiling tiles of the ceiling directly outside the art room. As a Department a goal for this year would be to bring more collaboration between all the art students and the different art classes. A family atmosphere is created in the art room and projects like these are great ways for us all to explore the talents of everyone and get a better sense of community. NHS Food Drive Berks Catholic is again teaming up with the Greater Berks Food Bank and the Notre Dame Club of Reading in the 2nd Annual Bread of Life Food Drive.
