We stayed on a campsite a few miles south of Barnstaple. One of the nearest towns was South Molton which is home to the Quince Honey Farm, so on a wet day (and there were a few of those!) we decided to pay a visit. The highlight of the day was seeing a bee beard. This is when a small cage containing a queen bee is strapped to a beekeeper’s chin and the rest of the hive swarm round the queen creating the effect of a beard. Fortunately all this happens behind glass so that everyone else can watch safely! As I looked at the bees in their hives and read the displays I was struck by the way that the honey bees work together, each with its own role. There are drones, workers and queens, and all are essential to the life of the hive. It is as though the hive is a living being itself – one big creature made up of lots of smaller creatures. I couldn’t help but think of the words of Paul when he described both the importance and connectedness of all the different parts of a human body, before saying, “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12: 27). On Sunday 16th November it is Church Service Sunday. Traditionally this Sunday has focussed on people serving the church as ordained ministers, but there are many roles to be filled and jobs to be done if we are to truly be the body of Christ, serving both the physical and spiritual needs of our world. We all have something to offer, whether it be talents, skills or experience. This is why, on Church Service Sunday, everyone will receive a short survey to ask, amongst other things, what people would be interested in helping with. There will also be questions about how people started coming to church, and a chance to rate the things that we are doing so that we know what needs to be improved. I hope that everyone will take part so that we get a good picture of both how healthy the body is, and in which directions we might be able to grow. These are for women and girls (aged 13 and above). There are copies of the questionnaire at the back of both churches. Please can these be returned to Br Newman by the middle of November.
