Minister’s Letter
In the summer the Newman family went to North Devon for our main holiday. We stayed on a
campsite a few miles south of Barnstaple. One of the nearest towns was South Molton which is home
to the Quince Honey Farm, so on a wet day (and there were a few of those!) we decided to pay a visit.
The highlight of the day was seeing a bee beard. This is when a small cage containing a queen bee is
strapped to a beekeeper’s chin and the rest of the hive swarm round the queen creating the effect of a
beard. Fortunately all this happens behind glass so that everyone else can watch safely!
As I looked at the bees in their hives and read the displays I was struck by the way that the honey bees
work together, each with its own role. There are drones, workers and queens, and all are essential to
the life of the hive. It is as though the hive is a living being itself – one big creature made up of lots of
smaller creatures. I couldn’t help but think of the words of Paul when he described both the importance and connectedness of all the different parts of a human body, before saying, “Now you are
the body of Christ and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12: 27).
On Sunday 16th November it is Church Service Sunday. Traditionally this Sunday has focussed on
people serving the church as ordained ministers, but there are many roles to be filled and jobs to be
done if we are to truly be the body of Christ, serving both the physical and spiritual needs of our
world. We all have something to offer, whether it be talents, skills or experience.
This is why, on Church Service Sunday, everyone will receive a short survey to
ask, amongst other things, what people would be interested in helping with.
There will also be questions about how people started coming to church, and a
chance to rate the things that we are doing so that we know what needs to be improved. I hope that everyone will take part so that we get a good picture of both
how healthy the body is, and in which directions we might be able to grow.

Harvest Thanks
Received by Fulneck: Thank you so very much for the Harvest donation, it was very generous.
God bless from all at St George’s Crypt.
Received by Gomersal: We would like to thank you all for the wonderful harvest festival contributions that you recently made to North Kirklees Women’s refuge for the women and children. The
produce donated has been given out in packs to the families and the remainder has been stored for
any future family that arrives at the refuge in crisis. We are overwhelmed by your generosity and
would like to offer our heartfelt thanks at this time. Once again thank you for supporting us.

Building Fund (preserving our heritage for future generations) and the
Outreach Fund (working in the community and attracting new members).

Ladies’ Questionnaire
The MWA executive committee are trying
to find ways of increasing participation and
membership of MWA. We have therefore
devised a questionnaire to find out what
women who are NOT part of MWA think
about women's organisations in the church
and what they would like to see. These are
for women and girls (aged 13 and above).
There are copies of the questionnaire at the
back of both churches. Please can these be
returned to Br Newman by the middle of
November.

11th European Women’s Conference 2015
Theme: ‘Building Bridges’
Dear Sisters,
This is an invitation to the 11th European Conference which will be held at Drumalis in
Northern Ireland from Thursday 4th June to Monday 8th June 2015.
The cost of the conference, inclusive of the Thursday evening meal to Monday breakfast,
will be £210 (shared room) or £230 (single room), plus the cost of travel to Drumalis. Drumalis is a Christian at the coastal port of Larne, within reach of our Moravian settlement of
Gracehill. There may be the opportunity for sisters to extend their visit by staying on for a
further 3 day tour at their own expense. Please state if you are interested doing this.
The Bible studies, discussions and service will be led by Bishop Kay Ward of the American Province, with the workshops offered by the sisters of Northern Ireland and including
a visit to Gracehill. Our Irish sisters are eager to welcome us!
The closing date for applications is 31st October 2014 and a deposit of £20 will then be
required with a completed application form from those who have received confirmation
that they have been allocated a place. Any further information can be obtained
from any of the above planning team.
