A WORD FROM DR. WALLACE
Dear DLA Families,
Thanks to all families who made the effort to attend our First
Quarter conferences. It is so important that you are aware of
the progress of your child. Most of our students did a great job
of making progress already and those who have not yet given
their best effort---together---we can encourage them to want
to learn in order to build a wonderful future for themselves.
THE GOOD WORD ABOUT DLA AROUND TOWN IS
about DLA’s success in 2014! Hopefully you saw our good
news about student achievement in the Dayton Daily News
and on Ch. 7. Our community partners are bragging about our
students and more people are signing up to be tutors for our
Wednesday tutoring sessions after school and our Saturday
Launch tutoring once per month.
Our newest partners include:
Boonshoft Museum will be bringing exhibits to DLA!
K12 Art will be offering sessions for our budding artists!
The Human Relations Council and Fair Housing
(represented by DLA Board member Joshua Ward)
the Northwest Priority Board (represented by DLA
Board member David Greer) and Jobs and Families
First (represented by DLA Board member Gayle
Bullard) are available to help our families.
Reminders:
All students are welcome to stay every Wednesday from
3:45-4:45pm and come to our Saturday sessions held
once per month from 9:00am-Noon. Students who
scored below 400 on the 2014 State Test are required to attend our Wednesday and Saturday tutoring throughout the year.
Our first Saturday Launch tutoring session is November 1 from 9:00am-Noon. Drop off and pick-up will
be in our back lot by the cafeteria door. The next
Saturday session is December 6.
If you have a phone number or mailing address change,
please make sure you share it with your child’s
teacher or the Main Office.
As always, THANK YOU for entrusting us for your child’s
education! We promise to do everything we can to help your
child succeed!

FOR YOUR WELL BEING
Happy Fall DLA Parents!
We are quickly headed toward FLU SEASON! Please have your student vaccinated against
the FLU! Parents, also be aware that the Dayton area is still battling Whooping Cough, and
Enterovirus 68! Keep your student up-to-date on shots, dress properly for the weather, and
maintain healthy habits at home, such as good diet and exercise! This will all help to prevent
illness throughout the next few months!
If your student is in need of any winter attire, please contact Nurse Jodi!
The mobile dentist will be at DLA on Friday, December 12th. Permission slips have already been sent
home. Please sign and return ASAP! If you did not receive a permission slip, please let me know. We have
plenty in the Health Clinic!
Please remember to visit our DLA website and check out the Health and Wellness tab for news and
resources. There are also links to additional sites for health-related information!
Curriculum Update - Kindergarten Parents
This school year, kindergarten teachers were very excited about utilizing a new assessment
tool to determine kindergarten readiness called the Kindergarten Readiness
Assessment (KRA). The KRA provides a broader look at your child's development by
assessing the following areas: physical well-being and motor development; language and literacy;
mathematics; science; social studies; and social skills. The KRA will give teachers a complete picture of your
child's learning and development. Data was gathered through observations of everyday activities as well as
responses to questions and other activities. The KRA was completed with all kindergarten students this
week. A report will come home to you on Monday, November 3rd. Please contact your child's teacher
with any questions you may have. You can also visit the following website for more information about the
KRA: http://education.ohio.gov/KRA
