In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it to completion at the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:3-6) It is with a heart filled with gratitude that I write my final “Corner” as your interim pastor. It has been an event-filled year—one of the best years of my life; and I thank you, the people of St. Paul’s, for making it so—and God, too, of course! As most of you are aware, Sunday, November 2 will be my final Sunday and final day as your interim. During the first week of November I will be moving to Fountain, MN, where I will serve as intentional interim pastor for a two-point parish, Fountain and Root Prairie Lutheran Churches. These congregations are part of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod. My contact information follows: 2 Pastor Karla Kirkeby 101 Spruce St. SE, Apt. 4 Fountain, MN 55935 [email protected] It has been an honor to serve with you this past year and thank you again for your loving support! I pray God’s blessings upon you and Pastor Frank Kauzlarich and his wife Ann as you begin your ministry together. I am excited for all of you and know that this will be a great new chapter in your history! An old German proverb brings me comfort and hope when I experience transitions. May it do the same for you: “All who live in the Lord never see each other for the last time.” Until the Next Time—or before—you will remain close to my heart! Next Council meeting Monday, November 17, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. 4 All Saints Sunday - November 2, 2014 A Service of Word and Song for Travels, Trips & Journeys During one of the Wednesday services this past August, we worshipped around the theme “Travels, Trips and Journeys,” given all the comings and goings of people in the summertime. Some of those attending thought that it would be a meaningful service for a Sunday morning this fall: autumn also means more comings and goings for St. Paul’s, as snowbirds move to warmer climates and people who have been away during the summer return. It is also fitting because it will be Pastor Karla’s final Sunday with us. So, we will worship around the theme, “A Service of Word and Song for Travels, Trips & Journeys” on All Saints Sunday, November 2. During worship we will remember the following members and friends of St. Paul's who have entered the Church Triumphant since last All Saints Sunday, November 3, 2013: Michael Wolfe, Joan Edwards, John Cole, Paul Robertoy, Sr., Glenn Jarman, Peter Davis, and George Fischer. Blessed be their memory! HOW THE WILD THINGS PRAY: WEDNESDAYS, NOVEMBER 5, 12 & 19 AT 6 PM We will continue to explore how God’s creatures might worship their Creator if they could speak, with their “perspectives” helping us to consider our own relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We need you to help us build a long range plan for our Christian Education programs. Your willingness to serve on the Long Range Planning Committee for Youth Ministry would be greatly appreciated. Karen Peterson can provide details of dates and times of meetings. October was a busy month for 1st and 2nd graders! Sunday School focused on sharing love and stewardship with others, looking for ways to be messengers of God. Inviting others to follow God, bringing a friend to church, helping someone with a chore, protecting each other from harm, sharing our food, etc. were discussed. It was amazing to hear the many ways kids understand God's invite to belong to his worldwide community of faith. Examples included sending toys and clothing to children in need, giving a hug to someone sad, inviting a friend to Sunday School, thanking adults for their work, caring for each other, etc. Our kids may be young, but take, nonetheless, their roles of messengers of God very seriously; in fact, we can all learn from them. 6 The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders built (sugar cube) pyramids and wrote commandments on parchment paper using reed pens dipped in ink! Cool activities to help our children get a feel for life in biblical times. And now they are actually weaving baskets while studying the story of Moses. Engaging activities that children will remember for a lifetime! We need shoe boxes! November is Operation Christmas Child time! Our Sunday School classes are participating in the international project that ensures children around the world have a merrier Christmas. Filling a shoebox with simple items is just one powerful way to brighten the lives of suffering children in over 100 countries. Last year our 18 boxes made it to children in Madagascar, Kenya and India Can you help us fill boxes this year? We need small items that will fit in shoe boxes. (Sorry, we can’t ship big items.) But we are looking for girl and boy items, ages 2 – 14. New items such as school supplies, hygiene items, small toys, flashlights (with batteries), hard candy, gum, and small clothing items would be greatly appreciated. The kids will include pictures and handmade cards, also. The boxes leave home Sunday, November 23rd. And, believe or not, the children will be signing up for roles and starting to practice for the Christmas Pageant by the time the next newsletter comes out! Parents mark Saturday, December 20th on your calendars for the dress rehearsal – 9:00 am start time. The Christmas program is Sunday, December 21st at about 10:30 (following the 9:30 service). Doreen Holt and Joni Witalison are coordinating the program again this year and have some new ideas! FREYA AND FLOSSY’S FAREWELL My cats, Freya and Flossy, wanted me to be sure to include their letter in the November newsletter, so here it is… (Pastor Karla) Dear St. Paul Humans, We so happy in Wisconsin and sad to leave you. Freya & Flossy 7 The Women's Bible Study Group will meet on Monday, November 10, at 9:00 a.m. in our multipurpose room at church to discuss the November study. We will continue our nine month study titled "Transforming Life and Faith", Through this study, we will consider how our lives and our faith journeys are transformed by the events we experience and the people we meet, In both the Old Testament and New Testament, we will read about people who have life-changing experiences. In the November study, titled Transformation Takes Time, we will explore how God gradually converted Moses and the Israelites to belief in one God and obedience to God's covenant. We will also discuss the fact that for people in the Bible and for Christians today, growth in faith so often takes time. The study is taken from the November issue of the Lutheran woman publication titled Gather. Copies of the study will be available. New members are always welcome. Call Kathy Olson at 868-3723 with any questions. Christian Women’s Book Club November – The group does not meet in November. On Tuesday, December 9 at noon, we meet for our annual Christmas lunch at the home of Kathy Cecil, 4295 Cottage Row, Fish Creek. Our book selection is The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. It is the story of a young girl in World War II Germany who discovers the magic of books through books she steals and reads aloud to help others cope with the deprivation and destruction of the war. Please call Kathy at 868-4295 if you can attend. Our Tuesday, January 20 meeting will be at 1 pm. Our book selection will be Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, by Jean Sasson. This book describes the life of Sultana Al Sa’ud, a princess in the royal house of Saudi Arabia. Hidden behind her black veil, she is a prisoner, jailed by her father, her husband and her country. It is a testimony to a woman of indomitable spirit and courage. UPCOMING BOOKS: February: River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey, by Candice Millard. This is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth, the Amazon, undertaken following his humiliating election defeat in 1912 when he needed to conquer his most punishing physical challenge. March: The group does not meet in March. April: The House Girl by Tara Conklin. An unforgettable story of love, history and a search for justice, set in modern-day New York and 1852 Virginia. An escaped slave, Lisa Sparrow, looks for a lead plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking compensation for families of slaves. May: The Storyteller, by Jodie Picoult. Sage Singer is a baker with physical and mental scars and memories of a car crash that took her mother’s life. She meets and befriends an elderly retired teacher who tells her that he is a former SS officer and asks her to help him end his life. The result is a story of secrets, redemption and choices. June: Flight Behavior, by Barbara Kingsolvers. This is a brilliant and suspenseful novel set in present day Appalachia; a breathtaking parable of catastrophe and denial that explores how the complexities we inevitably encounter in life lead us to believe in our particular chosen truths. Kingsolver's riveting story concerns a young wife and mother on a failing 8 farm in rural Tennessee who experiences something she cannot explain, and how her discovery energizes various competing factions—religious leaders, climate scientists, environmentalists, politicians—trapping her in the center of the conflict and ultimately opening up her world. We are grateful for your involvement. . . . Dave and Joyce Detert. THOUGHTS FROM THE BISHOP’S OFFICE “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the true will make you free.” (John 8:31-32) Toward the end of October we celebrate the Reformation, either on October 31 or the Sunday preceding it, remembering our heritage as heirs of Martin Luther, Reformer of the Church. It was on October 31, All Hallow’s Eve, that Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses or statements of debate to the Church door in Wittenberg, Germany. We are privileged to be living at a time when we are preparing to observe the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Plans are now being made by Protestants and Roman Catholics alike for a 2017 worldwide observance. But how shall we mark this anniversary? Hopefully not the way I remember some of the Reformation celebrations of my youth, worship services where we sang with triumphant gusto the Reformation hymns, where preaches hailed Martin Luther and his followers as the righteous ones victorious over the heresy and evil of others. I hope we will be able to observe this anniversary with both humility and thanksgiving, acknowledging the giftedness of our heritage but also the ways we have failed and missed opportunities for witness and service in the world. The 500th anniversary will be a wonderful opportunity to explore in fresh ways what it means to be followers of Jesus who walk in a Lutheran faith perspective. I would hope this would be a time for our being reformed, reshaped and renewed for participation in God’s opportunity to witness in fresh ways to the Good News of what God has given us and done for us in Jesus Christ, in ways that bring life, hope and peace to all creation. And I hope that our observance might be done ecumenically, with brothers and sisters of other Christian traditions enriching our lives and helping us all to be shaped anew as Christ’s Body in the world today. God has given us in Jesus Christ the one who is Life and Truth. The Reformation reminds us that we are always in need of being remade. Jesus says those who commit sin are slaves to sin. But as we come together in Jesus Christ we discover anew the truth about God and the truth about our lives. That truth makes us free to face the future with boldness and hope. Bishop Gerald Mansholt East Central Synod of Wisconsin 11 Circle The circle is a symbol for God, as well as for eternity, due to its lack of a beginning or an end. It also reminds us of how the church year (not unlike the secular calendar) flows from season to season and moves smoothly from Christ the King Sunday (the culmination of the liturgical calendar) to the First Sunday of Advent (a new beginning). Indeed, the One who rules all is the same One who’s first and final comings we anticipate anew during Advent. Remember the faithful believers Many denominations celebrate November 1 each year as All Saints’ Day. It is a day when we recall those who have died in the faith throughout history. Obviously there would be no Christianity without faithful disciples of Christ who have held fast to their faith in good times and in bad. There have been countless martyrs who have died witnessing to the love of God and the saving grace of Christ. And sad to say, in some parts of the world, Christians are still persecuted and even slain for their beliefs. Take time to think of our Christian heritage, and remember with thanksgiving those who have held fast to their faith no matter what. PLEASE PRAY On October 30 my grandniece, Amanda Anders, and another young women were shot and killed by Amanda’s roommate in Denver, CO. Please pray for our family, especially her parents, Steve and Sonja Anders and sister Alexis, along with Sonja’s parents, my brother Chuck and his wife, Susan. Amanda was only 19 and taking college classes and working, too. Steve and Sonja were in the Air Force and traveled all over the world, so close friends are few and far between. During this time of extreme tragedy and upheaval, I think it would be very helpful for them and for my brother Chuck and his wife Sue to receive condolence cards, even from people they do not know. So, if you are so inclined, you can send a sympathy card to: Steve & Sonja Anders & Alexis 3855 Wagner St. Strasburg, CO 80136 Chuck & Sue Kirkeby 4242 Defoe St. Strasburg, CO 80136 I will be flying to Denver on Wednesday, November 5 to be with them a few days. My thankful heart Making the stuffing for Thanksgiving dinner helps restore my heart to gratefulness. First I cut bread into cubes to dry out. Has it really been a year since I thanked God for the simple things of life? Dear God, thank you for my daily bread. Next I boil giblets for the tasty broth. When did I last express thanks for my body — even the oft-forgotten parts? Thank you, God, for creating and sustaining me. Then I dice onions and celery, adding them to the mixture. That reminds me to thank God for abundant harvests. Finally I measure raisins, nuts, sage and salt into the stuffing, as scents fill the air. Lord, help me not grow weary of the interesting “spices” that fill my life. As the stuffing goes into the oven, warm air wafting into the kitchen, I remember to thank God for providing my home. Here relatives and friends gather, often an odd combination. Yet when we bow our heads in thankfulness, we’re an unbeatable mix. —MaryAnn Sundby 13 14
