The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
November 9th, 2014
The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the
God of Jacob. — Psalm 46:8
The Temple and Worship
In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of
streams of living water flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all
living things, offering fresh healing to God’s people.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ
himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves
temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them.
For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the
presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took
place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with
the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in
what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a
place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ,
becomes the center of our worship.

Students from IC School working with Monarch Watch!
Every year 5th and 6th grade students participate in a
Monarch tagging program sponsored by an organization
called Monarch Watch. They are associated with the
University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. During the months of
August through November, students learn about the
monarch life cycle and about their migration to an
overwintering region in Mexico.
Monarchs are the only butterflies known to migrate, so
scientists have been observing them for years to learn more
about their patterns of migration. Students and teachers plant
specific plants in our schoolyard habitat to attract the
butterflies and then they participate in the tagging program
where the students become citizen scientists collecting and recording data used by the
scientists to analyze the monarch population. Students also look for monarch caterpillars
and bring them into the classrooms to observe the stages in their life cycles and then
they tag and release them, so that they can fly to
Mexico.
“The kids absolutely love the project! I've been doing it
for several years and they never seem to tire of looking
for the caterpillars and the adult butterflies!” says Mrs.
Ann Hill, 6th Grade Teacher. The first butterflies
arrived to Mexico last Thursday. Students can keep up
with what goes on in Mexico through a website called
Journey North and they can also report their
observations on this website.

Treasures from our Tradition
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and
yet there are two other sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the
Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with penance.
The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring for the sick: sending for the
priests, who will pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil,
and giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites of penance developed, the
sacrament of the sick was therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus
often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The
tradition didn’t unfold smoothly, however, and within a few
centuries the oil of the sick was taken home to be applied by
caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a medicine. As early
as the second century, bishops were therefore urging that priests
should be the ones to visit those separated by illness from the
Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the Eucharist
and the oil of the sick to the non-ordained faithful to bring home
was relatively short-lived.
This week we want to recognize Loretta Collins for being a member of
Lifeteen’s Core Team, leading a weekly Adult Bible Study, and being a
member of the Spiritual Life Committee.
Divine Mercy Chaplet

Religious Education
Dear IC Parishioners,
Last week, in our study group, as we discussed a chapter from I
Corinthians, someone made the comment, “The more things change
the more they stay the same”. So many times when we read Sacred
Scripture, it is immediately apparent that the situation being
addressed is very much a reality today. The passages and stories
have meaning and purpose that are intended to give us comfort and
also to help us grow in holiness. The first reading today (Phil 2:1-4)
got my attention and gave me pause.
“Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly
regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out
not for his own interests, but also everyone for those of others.
I was immediately compelled to consider my own choices and
behaviors over the past week. When I did something intended to
help, was I really looking for praise and attention? Do I respond to
the needs of others before my own comfort and desires? Do I stop to
examine my real motives, or make excuses when I refused to help?
How do I wear my faith in front of others? Is it with pride, or humility?
Lord Jesus, humblest of all, help me to become more aware of my
real motives so that I can let go of those things in me that hold me
back from following your loving example.

Statement- Mass and the Mission of our homes
A Message from Dc. Greg Pair
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
The bible says we should feed and cloth the homeless and those in need.
I know this parish is very generous in helping the less fortunate. But, I
would ask you to please don’t give money to those who approach you after
Mass or after you have attended a function here on our church campus.
Many of these people are in need and we want to help them, so please tell
them they can come and see Dc. Greg on Monday or in the morning. Most
people’s needs are very real but we have a few who will deceive you. I
would ask you to please put the money that you would have given them in
the poor box located at the North entrance of the church. This way I can
help them in your name. When you give them money in the parking lot, it
brings more people to the masses asking for help. So,
please be generous and give to the poor box. I will do
my best to help them as you would.
God Bless,
Dc. Greg

Salvador, a san Juan Bautista y a san Juan Evangelista.

nuestros talentos, recetas, culturas, idiomas y corazones. Tenemos
compartir tu cultura, ¡ven y únete a nosotros! Ven
