ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY AND
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a
sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other
sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the
Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long
associated with penance. The Letter of James sets out the
deep tradition for caring for the sick; sending for the priests,
who will pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing
them with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other
rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was
therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often
healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness
of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly, however, and
within a few centuries the oil of the sick was taken home to be
applied by caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a
medicine. As early as the second century, bishops were
therefore urging that priests should be the ones to visit those
separated by illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the
practice of consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to
the non-ordained faithful to bring home was relatively shortlived.
Will meet Tuesday, November 18th. The Rosary will be
recited at 7:10PM in the Church with Mass immediately
following. The Mass will be offered for all deceased members
of the Altar Rosary and Holy Name Societies. An
administrative meeting will follow at 8PM in Msgr. Casey
Hall. The featured speaker for this meeting will be Mrs. Emer
O’Mahoney who will share thoughts of her pilgrimage to the
Holy Land in 2013. Titled “Where Jesus Walked, Shepherd of
my Soul,” Mrs. O’Mahoney will recount her personal,
spiritual conversion which culminated in this very remarkable
experience. Her observations will provide a special way to
begin preparing for Advent and the beginning of our
Liturgical year. All members of the Parish are welcome to
attend. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

The Right to Life Ministry wishes to thank everyone for your
prayers and your generosity in the annual collection taken up
on Respect Life Sunday. Please continue to pray for a respect
for life from the womb to the tomb.
HARBOR HOUSE
In the tradition of the church, November has been set aside
for special remembrance of the souls of loved ones and of all
the faithful departed. You received an envelope in your
monthly mailing packets for this purpose and envelopes are
available at church doors. If there is someone you wish to
have remembered, list their names on the envelopes, enclose
your offering and leave in the collection baskets or return to
the parish office. All envelopes will remain on our altar
during the month of November.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
CONFERENCE
Of St. Martha and St. Peter Church invite you to join the fun
at “A TRIBUTE TO THE MAN IN BLACK, JOHNNY
CASH” featuring Michael Patrick’s RING OF FIRE BAND
on Friday, November 14, 7PM-10:30PM at St. Martha
Church, Pt. Pleasant. Tickets are $20.00 each and the evening
will include wonderful music, refreshments, BYOB, desserts,
and optional dancing. The society will use the proceeds to
continue to help the needy in our area. Tickets are available

Thanks all who supported Harbor House, the children’s
shelter in Toms River, through your generous donations and
prayers. The 400-mile bike ride for New Beginnings was a
success again. Thanks to your contributions, runaway, abused,
abandoned or neglected children and youth in Ocean and
Monmouth Counties are provided shelter and the important
services they need to find their way. Our entire community
benefits from the good work of Harbor House. Thanks again!

AND WIDOWERS
On Sunday, November 9th at the 11AM Mass we will celebrate a special Mass for all widows and widowers of our parish as well as for all our parishioners who have lost a loved
one in the past year. Light refreshments will follow in the

LATERAN BASILICA
THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP—In all of today’s readings,
the temple is prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams
of living water flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living people. Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations,
Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit;
that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them. For the
Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with
the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus
identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so
doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to be
the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus
Christ, becomes the center of our worship.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading—I saw water flowing out of the temple; wherever the river flows, every living creature shall live
(Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12).
Second Reading—Do you know that you are the temple of
God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
(1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17).
Gospel-Destroy the temple and in three days I will raise it up
(John 2:13-22).
