Youth Information…
This symbol indicates an opportunity to earn exhibitor points for the Northeast
Florida Fair. Begin earning your participation points for next year’s fair now. Don’t let
all of these opportunities pass you by.
All 4-H members are invited to plant spruce pine trees at Bo and Karen Salis’ house
(274000 Murrhee Road, Hilliard) this Saturday, January 10th at 10 AM. Food will be
provided for lunch so if you are planning to attend, call them at (904)845-PIGS. If your
family would like up to 5 pines to plant in your yard for a beautiful Christmas tree several
years from now, you can pick them up at the planting or at the Extension Office on Monday
or Tuesday, January 12-13th.
Do you have what it takes to be 4-Her of the month? This is a new contest we are
implementing in Nassau County and all youth are eligible. You may be nominated by
yourself, by a 4-H volunteer or club leader, by a 4-H friend or even by a community member
(examples include: teachers, fair board members, nursing home employees, etc.).
A descriptive statement needs to be sent via email to Mrs. Margaret or Mrs. Amanda or a
hand written or typed statement can be delivered to our Callahan Extension Office by no
later than the 20th of each month. This statement should include why you deserve this
recognition, and be as descriptive as possible! Some qualities to consider may include:






Did you attend your 4-H meeting this month?
Did you attend a county offered 4-H function this month?
Did you share project experiences with others this month?
Did you help someone or participate in a community service project?
Were you a good student this month?
Did you work on your project books this month?
If you are selected as the Nassau County 4-Her of the month, you will be featured in the
newspaper and receive an incentive. All youth who are recognized will then be in the
competition for 4-Her of the year, one youth per age division will be selected and recognized
at the annual 4-H awards program.
A 4-H Club of the Year will also be recognized at the annual 4-H awards program and the
criteria for this will be the Club Standards of Excellence. If you are a club leader with
questions about this, we will cover it at our upcoming training on January 15th.
Florida Beef Ambassador Contest 2015
Florida CattleWomen is looking for Beef Ambassadors to promote beef across
Florida. This program provides an opportunity for youth to become a spokesperson
and future leader for the beef industry. The registration deadline is Saturday, January 17,
2015 to the FBA program Chairperson Tami Newsome [email protected] The State
Contest will be held on January 31, 2015, at 9 am at the FCA Headquarters in Kissimmee,
FL.

Hog& Ham

In an effort to familiarize everyone with the Hog & Ham program and provide them
with the background information needed for success, a mandatory workshop will be held. It
will be held in Gainesville - Monday, January 19, 2015 at the UF Animal Sciences building,
room 156. If interested in attending, you must register through the Extension Office by
January 15th. Participation is open to youth 12 and older as of 9-1-14.

Here are a few details on each of the categories listed above. Please look under the Florida
4-H webpage for additional details if you can’t make the upcoming funshop (2/5 @ 4 PM).
1) With speeches 4-Hers develop experience in the preparation and delivery of a public speech. This contest requires
participants to recognize, organize, and present information on a topic that relates to 4-Hers and their friends and
helps them learn how to express ideas in an orderly fashion.
Guidelines:
· Participants choose the topic, but it must relate to 4-H in some way.
· Speech must be the original work of the 4-H youth.
· Senior speeches must be 5-7 minutes; Junior and Intermediate speeches must be 3-7 minutes.
· The top two speeches at county will compete at district events.
4-H Demonstrations and Illustrated talks help youth prepare and deliver a presentation using visual aids such as posters,
props, or a PowerPoint presentation.
Guidelines:
-No living vertebrates may be used in the presentation.
-Presentations must be 3-12 minutes for juniors and intermediates; 5-12 minutes for seniors.
-Presentations can be done by an individual 4-H member or by a team of 2 4-H members.
-Presentations can be improved between county, district, and state competitions but the content should not
dramatically change.
-During judging, parents may observe, but will not be allowed to speak with 4-Hers.
-Presentations will be judged by age division: Junior (8-10 years old), Intermediate (11-13 years old), and Senior
(14-18 years old).
2) The 4-H Share the Fun Program is designed to help 4-H’ers discover their talents, develop them, and have
opportunities to share those gifts with others. It is part of the 4-H Recreation Program and is conducted at County,
District, and State levels. The objective of the Share-the-Fun Program is to enhance the following areas: appreciation of
talent, leadership, confidence, interest in special training, and the ability to discover opportunities for wholesome
recreation.
Act Classification:


Instrumental: Musical instruments of all descriptions.
 Vocal: Singing numbers.
 Dance: All dance, baton, and acrobatic routines.
Dramatic and Novelty: Skits, stunts, pantomimes, monologues, puppetry, ventriloquism, impersonations, etc.
 General: Acts which include two or more of the above classifications.
Act Size and Length:


 Acts may be presented by an individual or a group.
Group acts should be limited to a maximum of five participants.
The time for each act can range from 3-5 minutes. Participants will have a one minute warning and
then the act will be called at 5 minutes.
3) The Poster Art Program gives 4-H members an opportunity to use the visual medium of poster fine art to
promote public understanding and support of the 4-H program. 4-H’ers are encouraged to develop their visual
communication skills by also identifying locations to display posters as a means to communicate to external
audiences about 4-H.


Theme:
Poster submissions can fall into one of three themes: Healthy Lifestyles, SET (Science, Engineering and Technology),
and Citizenship. The themes are based upon the nationwide 4-H mission mandated established through the leadership
of 4-H National Headquarters, USDA and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Visit the National 4-H website to

Examples on how to apply one of the themes to a poster include:
Illustrations of 4-H youth preparing healthy meals, 4-H curriculum icons, people speaking about
4-H at a county commission meeting, 4-H’ers working with the rocketry curriculum, anti-smoking
themes, youth in a leadership role, such as the State Council, or exploring beekeeping as a
hobby.

Watercolor
Pen and Ink
This class includes paints and pencils that use water as a solvent.
Ink pens, including gel and ink paints, come in an array of colors including metallic,
fluorescent, glow-in-the-dark and more.
This class includes both colored and graphite pencils.
Markers contain a reservoir of soluble ink that is wicked onto a drawing or writing
surface through a felt or nylon tip.
This class includes chalk, conté crayons, grease crayon, charcoal, wax crayon,
pastels, and litho.
This class includes all techniques applied to acrylic paints.
This class includes collages, varnishes, gouache paint, oil paints, and other fine art
mediums.
This class include computer or machine drawn images, scrapbooking, stencil letters,
and foam letters.

4) Summary of the Photography Contest

Entry Classes: The Classes in which entries are submitted have been changed to: People, Animals, Plant/Flora, Scenic,
Architectural Elements, Still Life, Hat Tricks and Magic, Photo Story, Black and White and 4-H Theme.
 Number of Entries: A 4-H youth may submit up to 5 entries. However, each entry must be in a different class. Photographs
cannot be dually entered into more than one class.
 County Submissions: County 4-H Agents can submit all Blue Ribbon placed photos into the State 4-H Photo Contest.
However, each youth cannot submit more than 5 entries
 Eligibility of Photos: All photographs must have been taken by 4-H members within one year of the date of the photo
contest state deadline (June 1 of the previous year).
 Previous Winners: Previous Best In Show winners, are eligible to compete again but not in the same photo class. For
example, a Best In Show junior winner in the Animals class can compete again by submitting a photo in another class.
 Size of Photo: Photos submitted must be 8″ x 10″.
5) Purpose: To encourage 4-H'ers to learn how to incorporate healthy cooking and eating habits and for the 4-H’er
to learn and improve their cooking and food safety skills.
The 4-H member must do all of the work them self, however, Cloverbud and Junior 4-H members can have adult assistance as
needed. Mixes and precooked items may only be used by Cloverbud and Junior age members.
Submission of recipes will be required.

Each item submitted on Friday, March 6 between 8-10AM must be accompanied by an index card and entry form. On a 3x4
index card list the name and age category of youth exhibitor along with the food group and category on the front and on the back
of the card, include recipe.
Food Categories: the 5 food groups (Dairy, Vegetables, Fruit, Grains, and Proteins) will have 3 classes in each of them: finger
foods, sweets, and breads. The main ingredient should determine the food group that your recipe falls under. This is a total of 15
classes and 4 age groups. Please consider using healthy recipes.
One item per food group and category may be entered (maximum of 2 entries per youth).

Products will be judged on taste, appearance, and overall display (in the event of a tie the complexity of the recipe will determine
the winner, if a tie still exists the nutritional value of the recipe will determine the winner).
*All entries will be recognized by Modified Danish scoring. Cloverbuds will not be judged, but will receive a participation ribbon.
6) BBQ Contest
PURPOSES:
To develop leadership talents and to work toward achieving the broad objectives of developing sound character and effective
citizenship.
To acquire scientific knowledge and improved understanding of the economy, versatility and nutritional value of chicken broiler
meat and its relationship to human nutrition and health.
To help youth develop skills in the preparation and use of chicken and to acquire the ability to express their ideas through
participation in projects, talks, discussions, demonstrations and exhibits.
OBJECTIVES:
To provide an opportunity for 4-H’ers to develop and use communication skills.
To create an environment for competition to select and recognize outstanding demonstrators.
To develop self-confidence in the 4-H member.
To research and develop a current knowledge base in selected subject matter area.
To teach and share current information with others.
RULES AND INFORMATION:
The state contest will take place at the State 4-H Headquarters in Gainesville during 4-H Congress and only one senior aged
youth can advance from county to state in each of the two categories, chicken and turkey bbq.
Plan to attend the 4-H Funshop on Thursday, February 5th from 4-6 PM at the Nassau
County Extension Office in Callahan. You will see examples of the above contests, see
judges score sheets, ask questions and more!
Save the dates of July 20-24 to attend Camp Cherry Lake. If you plan to attend
as a counselor or CIT you need to be engaged in leadership development through
county council or Youth Leadership Nassau. This year’s camp theme will be:

Make a Difference Monday Schedule
This is a monthly training series to help 4-H volunteers “make a difference” in their clubs,
community, country, and world. Volunteers can participate online from home. There will be
three more 1-hour sessions. In addition to the interactive presentations, there will be
