JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2/2014 RACE #1 RACE #2 BANNON 2 PENGALLY BAY 5 GLORIOUS MOMENT 6 TANCOOK 7 SWEET CORINNA BANNON 7 SEXY OPERATOR 6 TIMBER CRUISER 2 GUITAR GEORGE 4 LOOKINGFORANEWHOME MEG GIRY has been in two consecutive route events and has handled herself quite well; she stayed on willingly deep in the stretch two outings ago to be second against Leading Edge who was entered in the feature today; most recently, she advanced from eighth to be third against a winner who also rallied; she has had an interim work in 1.01.3. PENGALLY BAY was given the call to win in her debut; she drew in from the also eligible list in a seven furlong event over a yielding turf; she is a big galloping type who needed more room and she had her challenges on the turn; once in the stretch, she finished well and was one position behind Glorious Moment; she now gets to go around two turns on Poly track which should serve her style. th KASUGA debuted October 18 ; the significant early and middle speed she had in training was evident; she was up on the pace prior to fading; now that she goes around two turns, she has more of an opportunity to use that high velocity. FOREVER AFLEET was on a yielding turf course at seven furlongs last time and rated in behind rivals then moved well in the stretch to be fourth when Glorious Moment was second and Pengally Bay was third; she now stretches around two turns on Poly track. GLORIOUS MOMENT was second in her debut against a key winner while sprinting on Poly track; second time out, she went to a yielding turf course and advanced from tenth to be second behind a debut longshot who was given a good chance; she now looks to break through in her third lifetime start which comes around two turns on Poly track. th TANCOOK debuted October 12 when lasix free and finished fourth for Mark Casse; she was fanned wide and she backed away; there are changes here; she will now add lasix; Husbands takes over. SWEET CORINNA a debut runner, is a homebred for Gabe Grossberg and is from the same dam who produced the local winner, Sweet Interlude; she has worked regularly at five furlongs in some good clockings for Mark Casse getting ready for this launch around two turns with Campbell aboard. MASTER HARRISON a homebred for Laurie Silvera, is by Kentucky Bear and is from a dam who won as a juvenile and she produced the local winner, Grange Hill and that one took his debut; he has had several positive works including a quick move through the stretch October 28th in 36.1; Moreno has been aboard in the morning. GUITAR GEORGE a debut runner, is one of two entered here for Robert Tiller along with Monkamonk; this one has plenty of stamina in his pedigree but will travel just five furlongs; his sire did win the Queen’s Plate and his dam liked to go long; he worked this distance October 10th in 1.01.2 getting ready and does deserve some respect. MONKAMONK had some issues at the gate in an October 22nd opener; once underway, he ducked in from the rail post; he then rushed up the inside into contention but was done at the top of the stretch. LOOKINGFORANEWHOME debuted September 28th and had the rider off prerace; once underway, he was in against key company and attended the pace but was finally seventh; the runner up has come back to win; he came back with a prompt work October 24th in 48.3. DREAM ON JOHNNIE a debut runner for George Philip Ledson, is by Where’s The Ring and from a dam who has produced three local winners; he had some speed in his work in company October 26th in 49.4bg getting ready for Danny O’Callaghan. TIMBER CRUISER had a positive result in his opener despite some anxious moments at the gate; second time out, he was committed to a speed style with a half in 45.4 then weakened to be ninth against key company and the runner up has already come back to score; after a sharpening work October 26th in 49.1, he shortens to just five furlongs. SEXY OPERATOR had a useful opener just recently and gets a quick comeback; he was following a group of four who were battling up front and he moved to third on the turn but was finally fourth as a speed winner dominated; he gets to shorten to five furlongs. JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2/2014 RACE #3 RACE #4 BANNON 5 INTERPOL - BEST BET 10 CLEVER VIEW 9 BANGKOK 1 NIIGON EXPRESS BANNON 1 THEFORGOTTENONE 8 STREET FIGHTIN MAN 6 SWIFT TRAVELLER 3 MR. ABUNDANCE NIIGON EXPRESS was ridden with complete confidence by Husbands to win on Poly track last time; he drafted behind rivals and then moved outside and produced a timely win; the time before on turf, he was in the Breeders’ Stakes where he had a good reaching stride but he was overshadowed by the runner up, Interpol. GOLDEN RIVET won two starts ago in a race that came off the turf; most recently on the grass, he closed from three wide in the second flight to advance late in fourth with Clearer View second and Sea Of Silence in third. ROYAL WARRIOR took the only prize available last time in a route on Poly track at the first allowance level and was second best against a key winner who romped; this will be his second race ever on turf. BAY KING has been in the Ontario sire series while competing on turf and was a fringe player last time; he closed late along the inside. INTERPOL is an obvious contender here; he raced at a mile and a half in the Breeders’ Stakes and was second best to the late closing Ami’s Holiday; most recently, he took a maiden win when galloping in front; he came back th to work October 28 in 1.01 for Sid Attard. SEA OF SILENCE had a recent turf try October 25th and as the heavy favourite, he finished just on the edges; he moved inside but couldn’t improve his position late; he had run quite thoroughly the time before when just one position behind the runner up, Clearer View. CRUSHIN HARD was able to win for new interests October 13th when going three wide from the second flight and despite laying in, he persisted at eleven furlongs on turf; that was his fourth career win on the grass; he goes to the first allowance classification here. EAST SIDE had a visible excuse a furlong from home last time when he lost his path in a turf race and he reported in fourth beaten just two and a half lengths; he now goes for Steve Attard and Olguin has the mount. BANGKOK ran well in the Breeders’ Stakes as he brandished his closing power with an outside move and finished fourth while Interpol was second; most recently on Poly track, he found himself close to the pace and then couldn’t quicken in the late stages when the winner took off and Royal Warrior was better in second; he should like getting back to the turf. CLEARER VIEW quite likes the lawn although he does have some hanging tendencies; he closed from seventh to be second last time and the winner, Iroquois Falls, went on to be second in the Bunty Lawless. THEFORGOTTENONE is certainly one to consider now that he runs with a claiming evaluation; he is bred to have stamina; he encountered a slower early pace last time and changed his style to be closer to the front end but the top three were too tough and he drew away and he was left in sixth; the easier company serves him well. BARROWBY HILL stretched to a route for the initial time st October 1 and had a useful result when staying on to be third while Swift Traveller was second and that one is here; most recently, he shortened back to a sprint and was too late getting going behind a top pair who were both sent off at long odds. MR. ABUNDANCE will be going from a seven furlong sprint to a route here; he was made the 6-5 favourite last time when stretching out and he was in a speed duel with both the second and third place finishers and he weakened late to be fourth. CORDOVA a debut runner for Roger Attfield, was an auction purchase and is from a dam who was stakes placed locally; he is attempting two turns at first asking and has had lots of company in preps getting ready. st BEST OFFER stretched out for the initial time October 1 and had a closer finish than before behind a debuting winner who was strong in the stretch; one position behind him in fifth was Crafty Old Soul who has come back to win for $20,000. SWIFT TRAVELLER ran well in his only start October 1st which came at a route for $20,000; he should benefit from that event; he was attempting a speed style over a surface more helpful to closing types, yet, he ran thoroughly. ALY SPRING debuted in a sprint October 3rd and for $20,000, she was behind early but moving mildly in the stretch to be finally sixth in a field of twelve; the winner dominated the pace; she now stretches out. STREET FIGHTIN MAN had a useful run second time out when stretched from six to seven furlongs; for $32,000; he stayed on to be an ok third and a debut winner travelled well rallying from sixth to get the top prize and returned $81.90; he now gets to go from a sprint to a route and is bred to be a stayer. JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2/2014 RACE #5 RACE #6 BANNON 4 COASTAL MOON 8 ARCH ANGEL 3 BREAKING DOORS 1 CONSPIRE BANNON 8 CLASSY KID 4 ONE FOR JACK 2 BEL AIR BULLET 6 TRANSCEND CONSPIRE is getting his first start since early in the summer when he lost in double digits; he worked on the training track October 25th in 59.3 getting ready for this drop; the stable has had some positive results with devalued runners. CHARACTER ZERO a four year old, is returning to the races for the first time since January of 2013 at Gulfstream; he had the misfortune on that occasion to encounter the outstanding Verrazano who went on to win twice at the Grade 1 level; he is just getting back in the game now after a series of local works for Mark Casse and he drops to compete for a claiming evaluation and stretches to seven furlongs. BREAKING DOORS was driving inside trying to gain ground for maiden $50,000 at seven furlongs last time and did well to finish fourth beaten four lengths; in second was Coastal Moon and that one is here; he remains at seven furlongs. COASTAL MOON is certainly one to entertain; he had his th best race October 10 when brought here after earlier racing in Kentucky; he thrived on the Poly track with a late inside move and stayed on quite well; he now goes at a lower evaluation. BIG FIVE O is one of two entered here for Brian Lynch along with Breaking Doors; most recently, he dropped for $50,000 and was ridden up to be closer to the pace but hung at the most significant time and was finally sixth when Coastal Moon was second; he worked recently in 48.3. GIBBONS GAMBLER has been dedicated to the Ontario sire series with several fringe efforts; he was fourth last time with every chance to do well in mid stretch but he hung; the runner up has come back with a big performance. VALID VALUE was in against a key winner last time and was disarmed finishing seventh; the top one has already come back with a career best performance; this one goes the other way, competing now for a claiming evaluation. ARCH ANGEL is worth considering; second time out, he woke up on turf with a position close to the pace and he was finally fourth; he has been a regular in works since then and returns fresh for this event which comes with a move to Poly track and a drop into a lower evaluation. COOL LUKE has been in the Ontario sire series and was in that classification on turf most recently when out of the money and behind in double digits. FEVERISH LOOT has dedicated himself to turf lately and had a better result two starts ago than he did last time; he is now on Poly track and dropping down and stretching to seven furlongs; he has been freshened and has tried to build momentum with recent fast works. SIMON’S SIESTA a debut runner for Steve Attard, is a four year old son of Survivalist; he worked from the th gate October 12 and then had a more thorough prep th October 24 in 48.2 getting ready. TRAJECTAMAX was in for just $7,500 on Poly track last time when at the back; he is here for a chance to try turf, a footing over which he has two lifetime shares. BEL AIR BULLET rates some respect; he was in this classification at seven furlongs on turf last time; he was reserved and then advanced to be fourth against a key winner who has already come back to win; more room is available here. WANDOBOYSLEW has handled turf ok in the past although he has yet to win on it; he was in for $19,000 on Poly track last time where he closed mildly after an isolated trip. ONE FOR JACK moved three wide from the third flight last time and was able to steal third money in a tough speed event; that race should prime him nicely for a mile on turf and he raced quite well at this distance on the lawn back in the summer time; he rates respect with this easier company; he seeks his first win since 2012. ENDOGENY had such a thoroughly good effort on the lead two starts ago against Ontario sire competition to take his maiden win; most recently, he went to turf for the second time in his career and had another good fringe try although he gave away prime positioning late; he shortens up here. TRANSCEND is a one time winner on the turf and came close on Poly track two starts ago; most recently, he was in a first allowance event which proved too tough for him but he gave up positions only late and now he runs with a tag. GUEST STARRING was on turf last time at nine furlongs where he attended the pace but when the real running started, he went flat and then was seventh in the stretch. CLASSY KID handled turf ok back in July; most recently, he was departing an out of the money finish on turf and dropping to go to Poly track where he romped with Husbands aboard; the fourth place finisher, Panther Key, has come back with a nice win; he now gets back to the lawn and rates some respect given his current momentum. DEREK’S PRINCE has finished ninth in consecutive turf events and has now lost his momentum; he competes with a claiming evaluation for the initial time. GROM was against Ontario sire runners last time on turf when he closed belatedly to be on the edges without threatening. SONNY BENONI was in for just $7,000 at Fort Erie last time when winning; he is here for a chance to get onto the lawn. MELMICH will compete only if this event comes off the grass; he th attracted a claim September 26 when he disappointed as the favourite; he has been busy with interim works for Kevin Attard. JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2/2014 RACE #7 RACE #8 BANNON 5 LONDON TOWER 2 SHEZ A MASTERPIECE 3 BROOKLYNSWAY 6 QUIDI VIDI BANNON 1 GRANDMA’S HOUSE 5 X SQUARED 4 SOLINA BAMBOLINA 3 CIBOULETTE OBEAH WOMAN is bred to be a route runner; when she debuted around two turns September 19th, she sat quietly near the back and then responded perfectly to win narrowly; both the second and fourth place finishers have come back to win; she gets a more significant test here. SHEZ A MASTERPIECE was given a route test October 12th and passed it perfectly for Mark Casse; she was confidently rated by Husbands who moved her at the top of the stretch and she quickened in time to win it; she came back with an easy work October 25th in 1.03; she competes for Gary Barber. BROOKLYNSWAY ran strongly in the Mazarine Stakes when stretched out October 5th and finished second against Conquest Harlanate who was sent to the Breeders’ Cup; running from behind and on the outside was difficult to do; she goes here for trainer John Ross and had a fine prep October 19th in 1.13.2 in company getting ready. WANNA WIN a homebred for Charles Hayden, is bred to be a stayer by Lemon Drop Kid and will now go farther than ever before; she was a maiden winner at seven furlongs; she was full of stamina on that occasion; most recently in a first allowance event, the speed got away from her and the winner has since captured the Fanfreluche; she worked with stamina October 23rd in 1.02.2 for Roger Attfield. LONDON TOWER was preferred in her opener October 4th which came at just seven furlongs; she rated easily and commanded the pace and then drew off and had something left at the end; she has been busy with interim preps for owner/trainer, Steve Owens and worked well October 18th in 1.00.2 getting ready to go around two turns; she does have stamina in her pedigree; Boulanger now rides. QUIDI VIDI has been positively around the edges; she stretched out for the Mazarine Stakes where she broke last then made a strong but premature move around the turn; she ducked in during the stretch run and seemed to lose momentum in the same race where Brooklynsway was second; she finally finished fourth; she did post a good work October 26th going easily in 1.00.3 for owner/trainer Lorna Perkins. BONITA BABE competed in the restricted Victorian Queen at six furlongs last time where she was ambitious only early against a heavy favourite and then retreated; she has been busy with works since then. LEADING EDGE a homebred for Chiefswood Stable, was able to win second time out when sent a route and that is understandable given her outstanding pedigree; she has been quite busy with a series of works during October getting ready including a move October 19th in 1.00.2 on the training track for Paul Attard. GRANDPA’S PRINCESS won big at Belmont last time and has been shifted to the Brian Lynch stable for this run around two turns where she will get a more meaningful test. GRANDMA’S HOUSE was able to win big on turf September 20th; she next went to the Ruling Angel where she set the pace but gave up many positions late against a group that was much too tough; she eventually finished at the back; she now plunges for $25,000. LAST MINUTE LUCY was quite a quick and effective runner earlier this season; most recently, in an open first allowance event at five furlongs, she was overwhelmed in the middle stages; she gets in against claiming company here. CIBOULETTE had a nice rally on turf two starts ago to be in second against a turf loving winner; most recently, she came off the shelf October 17th or $32,000 and rated early then made an inside dash to finish on the edges against a winner who was repeating; she drops a level and shortens to six furlongs. SOLINA BAMBOLINA has been able to collect lucrative prizes but she was claimed last time by Jim Ensom who now takes her up to the $23,500 mark while Stein remains the rider; he has been aboard for three of her four wins this season. X SQUARED looks like a factor; she was second two starts ago behind a key front runner; most recently, she challenged inside at the top of the stretch but the winner moved outside to beat her and she was finally a solid second; the winner has already come back to win again. th MOLLY MORRIS came off the shelf October 4 for $25,000 and made an inside move but hung and X Squared was more thorough in second. ITS THE RUSH attracted a claim two starts ago when she faltered after a speed contribution; most recently for $25,000, she tried a new off the pace technique; the blinkers were off and she tried a run inside at the top of the stretch but eventually hung and X Squared was better in second; in this second start for these interests, the blinkers are back on and more speed will be expected from the outside. JIM BANNON’S JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2/2014 RACE #9 BANNON 7 BEAR’S TAURUS 2 COMMAND FORCE 3 VILLAGE DRIVE 9 ROCKINMEBABY EYE OF THE WORLD won as expected last time but needed a smart inside rally to get it done; he was claimed for $8,000 by Norm McKnight; the make up of this field with plenty of speed in it, does promote his late running chances. COMMAND FORCE was able to take his third lifetime win last time; he jumped on the early lead and commanded the pace and beat an improved runner up; there are other speed sources in here; he has also used an off the pace technique in the past. VILLAGE DRIVE likes to roll in the stretch and there is some conflicting speed in here which could promote that style; he was fourth in his latest for $15,000 and now drops for $10,000. LUCKY LOTTO takes the plunge here in for just $10,000; he will extend to a route and his only two turn career race resulted in a positive third place finish in a tough event; he th was overwhelmed October 26 by a group that had more middle and late speed. ACEUPPHILSLEEVE competed October 12th on a day when closers were ruling but he beat the bias by running to the lead throughout as the favourite for $8,000; he does encounter some other middle speed here. DEVIL IN WILLIE had a quick blowout October 30th in 23.4; he drew in from the also eligible list recently but had no impact against a strong speed winner. BEAR’S TAURUS raced competitively October 11th; he closed three wide from the second flight with every chance to do well and advanced to the runner up position in the stretch but was finally fourth; the majority of his wins have come in route races; he extends in distance here against easier. GRAN BID was trailing a dominant speed winner by about thirteen lengths last time, yet, caught up desperately late for the win; the time before, he lost narrowly against Eye Of The World. ROCKINMEBABY had an explosive stretch charge to win for $10,000 two starts ago when claimed; for these new interests last time, he was protected and finished out of the money; he now comes down to the level at which he was claimed; there is plenty of speed to run at here. RACE #10 BANNON 3 TORMENTA FIERA 7 ABENDINTHEROAD 16 BEAUFORT SEA 13 SCATLAND I’M NO FAIRYTAIL raced well last time; he moved outside and was widest through the stretch and closed vigorously to be third beaten just a half length behind a longshot winner. SUNNY WEATHER had a good result October 13th against some of these when I’m No Fairytail was one position better in third; he had every chance but hung at the most crucial stage when fourth beaten a length and a half. TORMENTA FIERA used the drop down angle October 11th and departed an out of the money finish on turf and went right to the winners’ circle on Poly track last time; he was without momentum until very late in the race when he kicked in to take his initial score in his thirteenth lifetime appearance; he now tackles non winners of two and he should appreciate the extra room. MIGHTY QUINN competed last time over a surface quite helpful to the front running winner; he was aggressive early but then backed away in the late stages; the runner directly in front of him, Major Production, came back to win big on Wednesday’s card. EXECUTIVE BARLEE came off the shelf October 13th and advanced from eleventh to be seventh without threatening in a race where the top three all rallied quite well. TWO STELLAS was a winner here two starts ago then was at Fort Erie last time to maintain positive form with a third place finish on the lawn; the top two in that event were quite strong. ABENDINTHEROAD was in a key race two starts ago and was unable to keep up; he took the big drop last time; he closed sharply alongside the winner who was also rallying and he finished second just in front of the third place finisher, I’m No Fairytail who is here. th BANDAMBA competed October 10 in a race dominated by a front runner over a surface quite helpful to speed; he made an early contribution to the pace but then was done; he came back to work October 26th in 49. DBL BARREL RESERVE was at Fort Erie recently for the second time in a row and took a fringe effort while on grass; he is winless in recent campaigns but does have one lifetime win here. FIRM BELIEVER was fifth of thirteen at a route last time in an event where late closers were having the best results; he is looking for a breakthrough victory and meets up with I’m No Fairytail who was third in that last event. BOOZE HOUND is a dropped down runner for Colebrook Farms going now for just $8,000; he had a wake up on a yielding turf at Fort Erie in late spring; his only subsequent start was an out of th the money finish here against a key winner July 13 ; he has been busy with a series of works. FIRECRACKER DAY came from Winnipeg to compete here October 13th but after attending the pace, he slipped back out of contention on the turn when Abendintheroad was second and I’m No Fairytail was third leading to this easier spot. SCATLAND competed as the favourite October 13th but his aggressive early approach did not work and he backed away and closers took the top prizes; he had run so much more thoroughly the time before when able to stalk and close. GOLD BOOK was next to last in the early going after a tardy beginning; he couldn’t get into the fight after that at long odds when Abendintheroad was much better in second. HARTE TO HARTE was in a quickly run race last time taken by a wake up winner; he finally finished eighth after moving up some positions in the stretch; he will now extend to nine furlongs. BEAUFORT SEA had such a perfect winning trip two starts ago for $9,500 to take his initial victory and he was drawing off; most recently, he went up to a protected level at the $19,000 mark where he attended the pace from the second flight then suddenly went flat in the stretch; the runner up competed here Wednesday and finished an ok third as the favourite when well bet; he gets back down with his own king here looking for the wake up.
