OUR NEW ORLEANS ARCHDIOCESE
FAMILY PRAYER
Loving and Faithful God, through the years
the people of our archdiocese have appreciated
the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor
in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.
We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother,
and ask you to help us in the battle of today
against violence, murder and racism.
We implore you to give us your wisdom
that we may build a community
founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect
to the life and dignity of all people.
Bless parents
that they may form their children in faith.
Bless and protect our youth
that they may be peacemakers of our time.
Give consolation to those
who have lost loved ones through violence.
Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance
to be a voice for life and human dignity
in our community.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.
Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us
that we may be a holy family.

WEEKLY REFLECTION
All Saints / All Souls
The Church’s celebration of the Feast of All Saints
on November 1 and of the Commemoration of All the
Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) on November 2 liturgically blend this year in an unusual way because
they fall on a Saturday and Sunday. Maybe that is particularly appropriate for us in New Orleans, where the
tendency is to make November 1st the day in which we
visit cemeteries and otherwise remember those who
have gone before us. (In many other places, both in the
United States and abroad, those traditions are associated more with November 2nd, el día de los muertos, the
day of the dead.)
Whatever the case elsewhere, these two feasts are
important reminders for us not only of the reality of
death, and of our obligation and our privilege to pray
for those who have died, but also of the Gospel challenge to live lives in this world which are worthy of
eternal happiness in the world to come.
In some ways, the solemnity of All Souls comes as
an afterthought to that of All Saints. Having commemorated all the blessed who enjoy the face of God, we
turn our thoughts to the other souls who await the fullness of God’s glory. The sequence of these two feasts
implies a belief that those who have lived lives of holiness enjoy God’s presence and can intercede for us
“before the throne of God.” The feasts also imply that
others, having lived more sinful lives, still await that
glory. Those are the dead we remember on November
2nd - members of our families, friends, the lonely and
forgotten, etc. We pray that God will have mercy on
them and invite them into the vision of blessedness for
which they longed. Traditionally we have described
that experience as one of “purgatory,” a purging, a
cleansing, which finally makes those still burdened by
the consequences of sin ready to embrace the fullness
of God’s love in heaven. What will make that happen?
It has nothing to do with “flames” nor with the punishment we associate with hell. More likely it does have
to do with that passionate burning feeling which is ours
when we finally and deeply know ourselves as forgiven
and loved by Love, by Mercy, Himself.
The feasts of All Saints and All Souls celebrate our
union as believers with the church in every place and
beyond all time. As we thank God for the saints who
intercede on our behalf, let us in turn assist by our
prayers those who await that glory.
COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ALL SOULS)
ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE
In November the Church remembers in a special way
those who have died. To have the names of deceased
loved ones placed beside the altar in the Sacred Heart
shrine please complete an All Souls envelope or card,
available at the back of church, and place it in a collection basket or votive candle box. No donation is expected.
THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
Our parish’s Ministry to the Poor is collecting nonperishable food items to fill Thanksgiving baskets for
needy families. Please leave donations in the containers at the back of the church. You might consider
bringing an item each of the next Sundays leading to
Thanksgiving. You may also assist by making a monetary contribution. For more information, please contact Cathy Brown in the parish office or Maddy Engel
at maddyengel@gmail.
FIRST TUESDAY
First Tuesdays, the Spirituality in the City series, continues on November 4 in Lenes Hall with David Crosby, pastor of First Baptist Church, speaking on the topic of “Your Pain Is Changing You.” All are welcome.
Admission is free and a simple lunch is provided beginning at 12:15 p.m. Join in this interfaith experience
which promotes dialogue and mutual understanding.
FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION
Honor the Lord’s presence in the Most Blessed Sacrament this Friday, November 7. Exposition begins at
8:00 a.m. and concludes with Benediction before the
Noon Mass. Additional “prayer partners” are needed
to sustain this graced First Friday tradition.
VOCATION WEEKEND
A discernment weekend will be held November 7-9 at
St. Joseph Seminary College in Covington for young
men of high school and college age who are interested
in learning more about seminary life. There is no cost
for the weekend, but availability is limited. For more
information or to register, call the Archdiocesan Vocation Office at (504) 861-6298, or e-mail the office at
[email protected].
FIRST COMMUNION / CONFIRMATION
Each spring, our parish sponsors programs to prepare
students to make their First Communion or Confirmation. (You do not need to be a parishioner to participate.) Information about these can be found on the
parish website under the tab “How.”
