CONSIDER A BEQUEST TO ST. JOSEPH’S
November 2, 2014
The Commemoration of All The Faithful Departed
Eternal Rest Grant unto Them
Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph,
Faith in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the hope
of resurrection for all his faithful disciples does not mean
that the dead are in heaven with Christ immediately upon
their deaths. Instead, the Church teaches both that salvation is a gift given by God and that we must be perfect as
our Heavenly Father is perfect to be in His Divine Presence. We cannot be in God’s presence with any attachments to sin or selfishness.
All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to
achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.
The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. (Catechism of the CC 1030-1031)
In the Second Book of Maccabees, reference is
made to the resurrection and purification, when Judas:
took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two
thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to
provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a
very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting
the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to
the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest
in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made
atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this
sin. (2 Mac 12:42-46)
So the Lord provides two blessings from the one act of
praying for the dead. The first is the purification of the deceased so they may be in the Lord’s presence, which is
assisted by our prayer and affection. The second is that it
provides the believers with a way of expressing their love
for their loved ones in a way that is efficacious.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church affirms these devote actions when it teaches:
From the beginning the Church has honored the memory
of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above
all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may
attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: (1032)
Our prayer for the dead is both helped to our deceased
loved ones and for us. May they rest in Christ’s Peace.
In the Peace of the Lord,
Fr. Allan F. Wolfe

PARISH MINISTRIES - ARE YOU INVOLVED?
Altar Servers: Boys and girls from 3rd through 12th grade are
invited to become altar servers. They participate in all Saturday evening and Sunday Masses, and special liturgies.
Church Cleaners: Would you be able to help us clean God’s

once a week and the chapel once a month. We usually work in
teams but could be flexible for cleaning several areas to fit with
your availability.
Social Justice/ProLife Committee: Social justice volunteers
serve God's people by having monthly food collections, assisting non-profit community agencies on a bi-monthly basis, and
preparing and serving meals for the homeless. All of their efforts focus on putting the corporal works of mercy into action.
For the Food Drive, collections are held the first Sunday of
each month. Canned goods of all kinds, especially those having meat or a meat base, are especially needed. The Pro-Life
Committee promotes pro-life awareness within the parish. Activities include the pro-life prayer calendar in the Adoration
Chapel, coordination of special ceremonies on Pro-Life Sunday, and special collections for various pro-life organizations.

SAINT JOSEPH'S HISTORIC CARL BARCKHOFF ORGAN
As good stewards, we have carefully maintained and refurbished this one of only two musical treasures in the United
States. In 2004 refurbishment cost $150,000. Thank You to
all who contributed to this project through our Organ Memorial
and Gift Program. At that time, we indicated that any money
received over and above the organ repairs would be used to
defray the cost for the hall renovations that were done in
2004. Currently we have $141,000 in the Organ Memorial
Fund, which will be kept for maintenance and future repairs of
our historic organ. Those wishing to contribute to our care of
this organ or memorialize a loved one may use the Organ
envelope now found in the vestibule by the memorial stand.
Thank You, again, to all who have helped preserve the treasures we have received.

NOVEMBER IS BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH
James, Alexander, and Patrick Healy
The very first African American priests in the United States were
three brothers born of a slave mother and fathered by a Georgia
plantation owner. The Healy Brothers: James, Alexander, and
Patrick were sent north for their education and freedom. Because
of the adverse racial climate in 19th century America, the Healy
brothers had to be ordained in Europe, beginning with James in
1854; Alexander, in 1858; and Patrick, in 1864. James Augustine
Healy later became our nation’s first African American bishop in
Portland, Maine, in 1875. A year later, Patrick Francis Healy, became the highly regarded president of the Catholic institution,
Georgetown University, in Washington DC. Ironically,
Georgetown did not admit students of color, until the mid-1900.
