Liturgical Reflection: Today the Church commemorates the Dedication of the
Lateran Basilica, the cathedral church of Rome. The Church is the Lord’s beloved
Bride who calls to him and through him offers worship to the eternal Father.
In the liturgy the whole public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of
Jesus Christ, that is, the Head and his members. Every liturgical celebration,
because it is an action of Christ the Priest and of his Body which is the
Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others. No other action of the
Church can equal the effectiveness of liturgy.

Vision for Our Church
We, God’s holy people, embrace the vision of the Father’s kingdom. We also realize that this vision
is a profound mystery of His love, power, and rule, in which the Father continually invites all his
children into His eternal presence. This kingdom is unveiled to us and to our church by the grace of
the Spirit found in the encounter with our Savior who teaches and feeds us by Word and Sacrament.
Jesus entered into our history as a pilgrim on a journey to His Father. In this journey he transformed
and built up those he encountered in his ministry of professing the Father’s love found within the
Kingdom of God. Therefore, we, His disciples, follow in the Master’s footsteps on our pilgrim
journey. As individuals and as a church, we build up the dignity of our brothers and sisters in
professing the Father’s love.
Into Action
Looking back on our tradition, especially the Acts of the Apostles, we see the disciples and the
church in action. Building up the Kingdom with our brothers and sisters with acts empowered by
the Spirit’s love and professing the Father’s love by our self-gift to others, we journey together in a
common bond to the full manifestation of the Kingdom. This view of our church gives us a number
of clear directions to follow:

SCHWAB FAMILY MAUSOLEUM >> [Pt. III] >> At the entrance to the mausoleum, leading from
the road path, and flanking the entrance walkway, are two large squares of granite, three feet total
in length, with about 18 inches above ground, each with the raised letter “S” carved in relief. At the
other end of the entrance walkway are three granite steps leading to the floor level of the
mausoleum. There, four magnificent fluted (channeled) granite columns, known as Roman Doric, of
free-standing, one piece intercolumniation, support the front of the structure. The one sectional
cylindrical columns are 15 ½ inches in diameter at the base and taper to 12 inches near the top.
Together they support the long, horizontal granite beam, known architecturally as a cornice,
spanning the width of the front of the mausoleum. The columns are 7 feet in length and are
crowned with 2 inch square granite capitals (abacus) below which, is an echinus, or convex
projecting type molding supporting the abacus capital. A short fluted necking of about four inches
runs down the upper part of the columnar section between the echinus and the sinkage groove or
cut that runs around each column. Above the door by which the mausoleum is entered, the name
“SCHWAB” is carved in relief. There is no epitaph, dates, or indicators as to whom is entombed
within. Two heavy decorative bronze doors, each measuring 19” by 78”, which swing on bronze
piano hinges, with a verdigris or green-like patina finish, granted to it with age, give a mechanically
keyed (flat 4 inch bronze key) entry to the walk-in, cell-like chamber with its own illumination – a gift
of nature. Each door has a squared bottom panel upon which rest vertical, heavy, plate glassed
panels; and in front of the glass is a decorative bronze grill featuring heads of lilly flowers and floral
leaf designs as well as scroll work, with a cross of a long shaft design (44 inch) arranged down the
center. Each door has heavy vertical, stationary drop handles (4.5 inches) for ease in opening the
bronze doors. The original entrance doors had a single, heavy, bronze grilled fence-type gate in
front mounted on left-side hinges; behind them, two in number, were highly polished windowless,
solid granite doors which hung on bronze pivots. Each door weighed about 600 pounds and was
provided with heavy stationary bronze knobs and a bronze lock. They were changed in the 1930’s
because Schwab’s parents wanted a more spiritual appearance to their mausoleum, one that was
full of light, rather than a dark, somber, uninviting one. At the far end of the enclosure, on its westfacing side with the setting sun, is a beautiful stained glass art window, 20” by 43”, featuring a scroll
design at the bottom, ornamented with a central radiant cross, set in a Romanesque, or rounded
framework, with six petaled flower heads and spiked leaves. Protecting the outside is a heavy, thick
plate glass window; originally there was a bronze grill in its place. [to be cont.] f.i.s.

Jn2: 13-22
Jesus was disappointed when He saw people selling inside the temple. Disappointment is a normal
part of all relationships. When a couple marries, the groom hopes his wife will never change, and
she expects that he will. Both will be disappointed. Parents will be disappointed by their children,
and children by their parents.
Disappointment and intimacy go together.
In a few weeks we will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9am. This is a great opportunity to
take time out and thank God for all of the manifold gifts we have received here in this country. The
Lord has been gracious to many of us and this now becomes a good opportunity to share some of
the benefits, that we ourselves have received, with the least of the Brethren. As many of you know
the tradition at St. Michaels is that we take up a collection of money and food for the Dorothy Day
Center, who act as our agents in this work of charity.
ATTENTION LECTORS Please stop by the Sacristy after mass to pick up your new lector workbook.
CHOIR PRACTICE-The choir will practice every Wednesday from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Come and join
us in praising the Lord!
