SACRAMENTS
BAPTISM: Parents should contact the rectory to arrange the date for the baptism of their
child. Baptisms are normally at 12:30 PM on Sundays. A baptismal preparation training
session is required for parents who are having their first child or who have never attended a
preparation session. Contact the rectory to sign up for the baptismal preparation class.
RECONCILIATION: Saturdays from 4:30 to 4:55 PM and Sundays from 9:00 to 9:25 AM.

MATRIMONY: Please contact the rectory six months in advance so that plans and instructions can be made.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK: For anointing of the sick, hospital visitation, or communion

Once again winter is at our back door. We will be collecting new or used (in good condition) all winter clothing. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hakenewerth whom have
volunteered to make trips to St. Patrick’s which allows
us to collect all items of outerwear. This includes coats,
sweaters, hats and gloves for men, women and children

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY
St. Vincent DePaul Society will hold their bi-monthly
meeting on Tuesday, October 21, at 7:00 PM, in the
Lounge. If you are interested in joining this ministry,
please plan to attend the meeting.
ST. VINCENT DEPAUL UPDATE
During September, we received 146 calls for various reasons. We directly helped 51 families (108 adults and
children). The balance of calls were properly attended.
Our expenses totaled $6,803, which included : Rent =
$1,232, Electric = $3,887, Gas = $1153, Water = $331,
Car Repair = $ 100, Disaster Relief = $ 100.
Thank you patrons, organizations, and those contributing
through the poor box. All are welcome to attend our
meetings held on the first and third Tuesday of the month
at 7:00 PM in the Teacher’s Lounge.
Prayer: For all those who are poor and destitute, may
we bring them our Lord’s love.

ANNUAL RESPECT LIFE CONVENTION
The 38th Annual Respect Life Convention will be held at
the St. Charles Convention Center on Sunday, October
26th, starting with Mass at 9:30 AM, followed by Exhibits
at 10:30, Luncheon at 11:30, and Workshops starting at
2:00 PM. Keynote speaker at the luncheon will be Melissa Ohden, a saline abortion survivor. She uses her experience to provide support for other abortion survivors
and to educate all on the generational impact of abortion. Her story is a testimony to the power of love and
forgiveness. All events are free except for lunch, which
requires a reservation and is $45 ($50 for reservations
made after Oct. 14). Payment is due by Oct. 21. Reservation forms are available in the church vestibule. Six
workshops will be presented: “Ending Abortion with
Compassion”, “Then and Now: The Descent of Ethics”,
“The Gift of Adoption”, “Respecting Sexuality”, “A Lifetime of Love Valuing our Most Vulnerable”, and “Young
Adults Build a Culture of Life”.

LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN
Many people who attend the 9:30 Mass on Sunday
morning see our children dismissed from the Mass and
wonder what this is all about. The children in grades 1 6 are going to a classroom with a trained facilitator to
hear the Scriptures read from the Children’s Lectionary
in simpler language. They listen to a homily prepared
just for them, profess the Creed in a question and answer format, ask God’s help for the world and for their
families, and then rejoin their parents for the Liturgy of
the Eucharist. There is no fee for this and all children
are invited to attend. If you have grandchildren in town
and they would like to join us, please know that they are
welcome.
YOUTH GROUP
Permission forms are now available for our day of rest
and relaxation at Pere Marquette State Park on Sunday,
October 26. These must be returned no later than Sunday, October 19. Anyone in grades 8 through 12 is welcome to attend. Please consider joining us.
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Today is World Mission Sunday! We are invited today to
reach out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the
world’s youngest Catholic Church, as well as local
churches throughout the Missions, in the most remote
areas across our world. Your prayers and generous gift

FOCUS: Jesus teaches us how to reconcile our earthly
commitments with our obligations to God. Jesus challenges us to examine how we demonstrate our fidelity to
Him while living in the world. Do worldly attachments or
loyalties get in the way of our being faithful to Jesus and
His teachings? Today’s readings show that there need
not be a conflict between fulfilling our civil obligations
and our obligations to God.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
The prophet Isaiah tells us that God uses even the pagan king, Cyrus, to do His will. Saint Paul gives thanks
for the Thessalonians, who live their faith in Christ with
total conviction. In the Gospel, Jesus disarms the Pharisees by telling them to give to Caesar what belongs to
him but give to God what belongs to God.

A CALL FOR PEACE IN OUR COMMUNITY -- ARCHBISHOP ROBERT J. CARLSON
By now, we should all realize that there is no going back to the status quo following the tragic shooting of Michael
Brown. Rightly so! The status quo was not good enough. This tragedy has left a community struggling to cope with
anger and frustration that it had repressed for many years. Now is our moment of truth. We can let the anger and frustration spill over in violence, and be repressed again. Or we can take the opportunity to break the cycle and address
the underlying issues that cause the anger and frustration.
But we need to keep in mind the issues here are bigger than Ferguson. They are as deep as the hold of sin on the
human heart and as broad as the solidarity of the entire human race. That means we will not be able to fix things
quickly. But we have to move forward. And it is not just Ferguson or the greater St. Louis metropolitan community, but
the entire country and the whole Church that needs to look at these issues.
Is it not a sad reality that we integrated professional baseball and schools a long time ago, but we have not integrated
everyone’s heart?
The sin of racism in our cities and our nation must be dealt with, but never with violence. There are small but vocal
groups currently threatening violence. I urge anyone who feels the desire to violently lash out to first pause and consider the potential consequences of their actions: Will violence make the situation right? Will it right the wrongs? Or
will it only make things worse? The unrelenting desire for revenge is a poison that seeps into our souls and can become contagious carrying with it a commitment to violence.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a
night already devoid of stars...Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” What’s the solution? For all of us to
be quick to apologize for our own faults, and as quick to forgive the faults of others as we want them to be in forgiving
ours.
We need to come together in prayer and dialogue to address the deeper underlying issues -- family breakdown, racial
profiling, quality education, abuses of authority, lack of gainful employment, fear of one another, mistrust of authority,
black on black violence, and white flight.
In God we are all one family and we need to call upon Christ the Prince of Peace in prayer to give us the strength to sit
down together as brothers and sisters.
So, let’s ask: what blueprint does God have in mind for us? And let’s remember that Christ gave us the blueprint: to
love God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourself. What that means for
us is that we must respect the dignity of each other. We show that respect by having a willingness to sit down together
and dialogue, by having the humility to admit our mistakes and say we are sorry, and by praying for one another -- yes,
praying! Praying that God fills our hearts with love for one another, removes the hate we have allowed to fester there,
and teaches us how to express our love in concrete ways.
It is no longer the time to ask “What would Jesus do?” It is time to ask “What is Jesus doing?” What Jesus is not doing
is adding violence to violence. Remember what he said to his disciples in the Gospel of Luke when they asked if they
should call down fire from Heaven to consume a town that didn’t welcome him? (Lk 9:54). He rebuked them. Jesus is
also not ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away! What Jesus is doing is pleading with us to listen to each other, respect each other, and help each other.
That’s the same Jesus who said: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Christ calls
us to promote peace, not provoke violence. Our Lord Himself suffered the most terrible of injustices, because although
incapable of doing wrong, He was nevertheless condemned to suffer and die on the cross. And when one of his disciples responded by lashing out in violence he said “Put away your sword!”
Inspired by the example of Christ, I fervently renew my call to everyone in Ferguson and the greater St. Louis community: be an instrument of peace amid the chaos! Work for calm in the turmoil!
If we depart from God’s blueprint, the fruit of our thoughts and actions will not be peace but its opposite -- force and
violence!
It’s time to turn to a different kind of power -- persuasion and service. It is the way of Gandhi and Blessed Teresa of
Calcutta. It is the way of the Lord who is filled with love and mercy. It is the way each of us should be. May the God
who suffered on the Cross fill us with love, and guide our thoughts and actions.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE AND
ALL SOULS DAY MASS
All parishioners are invited to write the names of loved
ones who died during the past year in the Book of Remembrance located at the front of Church during the
month of November. Fr. Patrick Ryan and the St. Robert’s Bereavement Committee invite you and your family
to join us for the Feast of All Souls Mass at 9:30 AM on
Sunday, November 2, 2014. During the Mass, the
names of all those buried from St. Robert’s during the
past year will be read and the bell tolled for each. A candle with the name of each will be lit in their memory and
will burn in the Sanctuary for the next 7 days. All are
invited to a reception with refreshments, which will be
held in the parish hall immediately after Mass.

STEEPLE UPDATE
After checking into the possibility of a steeple on the
church, it was decided the roof would not support a steeple -- the wind being a big factor. Then a bell tower with
a steeple separate from the church was considered, and
the cost was far beyond our budget. Therefore, that
idea was also dropped. We would like to thank Mr. Dennis Orne of LePique & Orne Architects for his help and
professional opinion.
SPIRITUALITY WORKSHOP
Calling all men of the parish. We are hosting a spirituality workshop for all the men of the parish. The workshop
is being held here at St. Robert’s on Saturday, November 22nd from 9:00 AM to Noon. The workshop is being
led by Father Mitch Doyen. Father Doyen is currently
the Associate Pastor at Assumption Parish in O’Fallon,
Missouri. Fr. Doyen has devoted a great deal of his
Catholic ministry to inspiring men to enhance their spiritual experience with God. Father Doyen has titled this
workshop: Walking with men in Scripture finding our
way into the Heart of Christ. Father Doyen plans to
connect his life experience with the stories of Moses,
David, Elijah, Peter, and Paul. He will then invite all of
the men of our parish to make similar connections to
their own life stories. We are asking you to put aside
three hours of your time and come join us on Saturday,
November 22nd and enhance your spiritual experience
with God.
