ADVENT & CHRISTMAS IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!
Advent is a time to prepare ourselves for the coming of Our Lord, Jesus
Christ, and giving alms to those in need is a perfect way to begin this
season. If you know of any children or senior citizens who would
benefit from a gift this year, please contact Linda Olio at the rectory
with their name, address, age, size (really important), special hobbies
or interests, and suggestions/ideas to personalize their gift. In order to
include them in our giving program this year, we will need their
information no later than Monday, November 24th.
November 9th: Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
The Temple of Stones is a Symbol of the
Living Church
Today the liturgy celebrates the dedication
of the Lateran Basilica, called “mother
and head of all the churches of the city and
the world.” In fact, this basilica was the
first to be built after Emperor
Constantine’s edict, in 313, granted
Christians freedom to practice their
religion. The emperor himself gave Pope Miltiades the ancient palace of the
Laterani family, and the basilica, the baptistery, and the patriarchate, that is,
the Bishop of Rome’s residence — where the Popes lived until the Avignon
period — were all built there. The basilica’s dedication was celebrated by
Pope Sylvester around 324 and was named Most Holy Savior; only after the
6th century were the names of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist
added, and now is typically denominated by these latter.
Dear friends, today’s feast celebrates a mystery that is always relevant:
God’s desire to build a spiritual temple in the world, a community that
worships Him in spirit and truth (cf. Jn 4:23-24). But this observance also
reminds us of the importance of the material buildings in which the
community gathers to celebrate the praises of God. Every community
therefore has the duty to take special care of its own sacred buildings, which
are a precious religious and historical patrimony. For this we call upon the
intercession of Mary Most Holy, that she help us to become, like her, the
“house of God,” living temples of His love. — Pope Benedict XVI
Nov. 11th: Feast of Saint Martin of Tours
ST. MARTIN was born c. 315A.D. His
father was an officer if the Roman army,
and for this reason Martin also was
required to serve, but his desire was to be
a Christian monk. Fearing that his service
in the military would jeopardize his
baptismal grace, he decided to postpone his baptism to a time after his
military service, and so, he was still an unbaptized catechumen when he
was forced to join the army at age 15.
On a bitterly cold winter day, the young tribune Martin rode through the
gates, dressed in the regalia of his unit -- gleaming armor, ridged helmet,
and a beautiful white cloak whose upper section was lined with lamb’s wool.
As he approached the gates he saw a beggar, with clothes so ragged that
he was practically naked. The beggar was shaking and blue from the cold
but no one would help him. Martin, overcome with compassion, took off his
cloak. In one quick stroke he slashed it in two with his sword, handed half to
the freezing man and wrapped the remainder on his own shoulders. Many in
the crowd thought this was so ridiculous a sight that they laughed and
jeered but some realized that they were seeing Christian goodness. That
night Martin dreamed that he saw Jesus wearing the half cloak he had given
the beggar. Jesus said to the angels and saints that surrounded Him, "See!
this is the cloak that Martin, yet a catechumen, gave Me." When he woke, it
was the "yet a catechumen" that spurred Martin on and he went
immediately to be baptized.
Martin went on to leave the military and lived the life of a hermit. Because of
his holiness he was chosen as bishop and served the diocese of Tours for
many years until his death, c. 400 A.D. His body was transported to Tours
by way of the river Loire. It is said that the trees and shrubs on the banks of
the river began to flower as his body passed by. This led to the tradition of
“St. Martin’s Summer”, which describes a warm spell occurring between
Nov. 11th and November 20th. St. Martin is the patron of: soldiers, beggars,
wool-weavers and tailors, geese (because they gave his hiding place away
when he tried to avoid being chosen as bishop), vintners and innkeepers,
and France.

St. Albert the Great ~ Feast Day November 15th
Honoring All Who Served – 11.11.11
Albert, the "light of Germany," called the
Great because of his encyclopedic
knowledge, was born in 1193 at Lauingen,
Donau. He studied at Padua, where under
the influence of the second Dominican
general, he joined the newly-founded Order
of Preachers (1223). Soon he was sent to
Germany, taught in various cities,
particularly Cologne; Thomas Aquinas was his student. In 1248
he received the honor of Master in Sacred Theology at Paris.
Throngs attended his lectures.
In 1254 Albert was chosen provincial of his Order in Germany.
For a time he lived at the court of Pope Alexander II, who in
1260 made him bishop of Regensburg; two years later, however,
he returned to his community at Cologne. There he acted as
counselor, peacemaker, and shepherd of souls with great success.
He died at the age of eighty-seven. Pope Pius XI numbered him
among the ranks of the saints on December 16, 1931, and declared
him a doctor of the Church.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an
armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared
between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War.
Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year,
November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States
in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War,
Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to
American veterans of all wars.
On June 4, 1926, Congress passed a resolution that the “recurring
anniversary of [November 11, 1918] should be commemorated
with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to
perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding
between nations” and that the president should issue an annual
proclamation calling for the observance of Armistice Day. An act
approved May 13, 1938 made November 11 a legal Federal holiday,
“dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter
celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” In 1954 the 83rd U.S.
Congress amended the 1938 act, striking the word “Armistice” in
favor of “Veterans.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the
legislation on June 1, 1954. From then on, November 11 became a
day to honor American veterans of all wars.
As grateful citizens we should remember to beg God’s eternal
blessing on all who have served, and especially on those who
sacrificed their lives to keep our nation safe.
From St. Albert, writing on the Lord’s gift of the Eucharist:
“He could not have commanded anything more beneficial, for this
Sacrament is the fruit of the tree of life. Anyone who receives this
Sacrament with the devotion of sincere faith will never taste death. It
is a tree of life for those who grasp it, and blessed is he who holds it
fast. The man who feeds on Me shall live on account of Me.”
