Death of a loved one, or one’s fear of death, can bring a darkness in life. God has given us his Son, so that uniting ourselves to him in prayer and through the sacraments, we will be filled with all the graces we need to live life with the fullness of hope. In the first reading, we are reminded that the souls of the just are in the hand of God. In Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans, he tells them that the same Holy Spirit given by the Father to Jesus, has been poured into their hearts as God’s love. In Saint John’s Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd that all who believe in him will be raised up to eternal life. The Church has encouraged prayer for the dead from the earliest times as an act of Christian charity. "If we had no care for the dead," St. Augustine noted, "we would not be in the habit of praying for them." Yet pre-Christian rites for the deceased retained such a strong hold on the superstitious imagination that a liturgical commemoration was not observed until the early Middle Ages, when monastic communities began to mark an annual day of prayer for departed members. In the middle of the 11th century, St. Odilo, abbot of Cluny, France, decreed that all Cluniac monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2, the day after the feast of All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church. The theological underpinning of the feast is the acknowledgment of human frailty. Since few people achieve perfection in this life but, rather, go to the grave still scarred with traces of sinfulness, some period of purification seems necessary before a soul comes face-to-face with God. The Council of Trent affirmed this purgatory state and PARISH BULLETIN * November 02, 2014 – Commemoration of all the faithful departed (A) insisted that the prayers of the living can speed the process of purification. Superstition easily clung to the observance. Medieval popular belief held that the souls in purgatory could appear on this day in the form of witches, toads or will-o’-the-wisps. Graveside food offerings supposedly eased the rest of the dead. Observances of a more religious nature have survived. These include public processions or private visits to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers and lights. This feast is observed with great fervor in Mexico. We would like to thank our community for all the prayers offered for Mac since he has been in the hospital from June 28. It is because of all the prayers that God answered our petitions and Mac received heart and double lung transplant on Sep. 25. It is truly a miracle and he is doing absolutely amazing. He can get out of the hospital, although he will have to be close by as he will still have to go to the hospital every day for therapy and all the other things he will need to learn in order to live with this miracle. THANK YOU AND WE HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP HIM IN YOUR PRAYERS. God bless! If you wish you can include in the box Christmas card and/or your family picture. Also we had to pay $1.00 for each box, so if you would like to cover that cost please include a loonie in the box. Deadline for returning boxes this year is Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014. If you find it difficult to go and purchase the items for the box you can give instead a donation in any amount with the note: “For Santa Clara Mission”. Someone will do the shopping on your behalf and prepare the box. Thank you very much for your generosity! BIBLE STUDY DAYSLAND Jerry & Theresa Steil “GOD WANTS YOU WELL” People spend billions every year to retain or restore health. No one wants to be sick. Yet often we are told that God is either causing sickness or allowing it for a reason. But the truth is: “GOD WANTS YOU WELL”. Bible Study of the same title will be starting soon on Tuesday nights after evening mass at 7.00 PM in Our Lady of the Prairies Church in Daysland. If you are interested call Susan at 780-376-2206 so that study materials can be ordered. MEMORIAL MASS Wednesday - November 19, 2014 at 7.00 PM Our Lady of the Prairies Church – Daysland At this Mass we will be remembering in a special way all those whose funerals have taken place from all our parishes during the last 12 months. A candle will be lit for each person who passed away during that time. We share in the deep sadness these families experienced during this difficult time, and ask God to bless and heal them. Be assured that He grants unto loved ones eternal rest and peace. DO YOU WANT TO DONATE GENTLY USED WINTER OUTWEAR? We have some garbage bags filled with gently used coats, toques, scarves, mitts, etc. and are planning on taking them to the Mustard Seed in Edmonton about mid-November. If anyone has gently used winter outerwear that they would like to add to this, could they please somehow get them to the Daysland Church on or before November 16, 2014. Thank you!
