From the sports perspective despite the name of this
column I have little to say about my Packers this week as they
had their bye last weekend. This weekend they hope to get
back to their winning ways as they meet Chicago in Green Bay.
Obviously I also hope they defeat the Bears this Sunday
evening. I did not have a chance to comment about the
Redskins last week as they played that Monday evening and
somewhat surprisingly defeated the Cowboys in Dallas. Then
last week with their new old quarterback in the saddle they lost
to the Vikings. That is a game I actually hoped Washington
would have won as Minnesota is one of the Packers’ chief
adversaries. The Redskins have their bye this weekend, so I’ll
let matters lie with these few comments.
Moving on to other topics, first as promised a couple of
weeks ago, I have further comments on our Oktoberfest, which
was held the last Sunday in October. As always it was a great
event. The weather couldn’t have been better. We had a
fantastic turnout of parishioners and guests of all ages. As
usual the food was outstanding and evidence of that is nearly
all of it went. There were only a few “brats” left (out of 500
pounds worth) and all the pork was eaten. As I have mentioned
previously, this day just doesn’t happen. A good number of
very dedicated people make it happen. Spearheading it again
this year was Kim Sackett and Emma Lopo-Sullivan. Both of
their husbands, Dave and Dan respectively, were very involved.
As in the past the food was coordinated by Chris Bahret. He
was assisted by Steve Scalsky and almost his entire family.
The Knights of Columbus also helped with food. The beverage
portion of the day was coordinated again by John McDonald
and some of his family. The Catholic Daughters helped take
donations. This year our children’s activities were coordinated
by Rosie McLaughlin, who is a seventh grader in our school.
We had the Mt. Vernon Community Band again providing music
as they have done from “day one.” Also assisting that day was
Fran and Trudi Boyd, Tom Johnson, Judie Boyd, Mary Sheila
Evans, and Stuart Vickery. Needless to say there were others
who also made the day possible and to all of them I am very
grateful. Of course, I am also grateful to all who came and
enjoyed an afternoon of German festivities and hopefully an
opportunity to socialize with fellow parishioners.
On to the next topic, I remind you that this weekend
we have our special second collection for the St. Vincent De
Paul Society. They very much need your financial assistance,
but also your time if you are willing to volunteer. They, as I also
have mentioned before, continue to do tremendously good work
for the parish, truly reaching out and assisting those in need.
With all the requests there is much to be done. With more
volunteers their work load is spread out, so please consider
both a donation of time and financial resources. In advance I
thank you for that as well. They meet a couple of times a
month to discuss their efforts and take a week of duty. Please
contact Dan Gill, the president, for more information by calling
the rectory office.
Yet another reminder is that this month is dedicated by
the Church to the Poor Souls in purgatory. We celebrated their
feast day last Sunday and just this Saturday we had a special
Mass for all of those who died this past year with some
connection to our parish. A light reception followed which was
hosted by our parish Bereavement Committee. I am very
grateful to them for this and for all they do all year long. We
can pray for the dead everyday, but again we do so especially
during this month, so please remember in your prayers those
who await the glory of heaven. God bless them and us.

PRAYER SERVICE FOR HEALING FOR VICTIMS/SURVIVORS OF
SEXUAL ABUSE: In 2005, the Diocese of Arlington began a series of
Prayer Services for victims/survivors of sexual abuse celebrated by Vicar
General Rev. Mark S. Mealey, O.S.F.S. The Prayer Services include a
survivor’s testimony of his or her efforts to heal from the effects of sexual
abuse, followed by a light reception. The next Prayer Service will be on
November 15 at 10:30 A.M. at Saint Catherine of Siena, 1020 Springvale
Road in Great Falls. Rev. Mark S. Mealey, O.S.F.S. will preside.

BAMBINELLI SUNDAY: On the Third Sunday in Advent after his Angelus
address, the Holy Father blesses the Christ Child figurines or "Bambinelli"
that the children of Rome will place in the family creches on Christmas
morning. After all the Masses on December 13th and 14th, this lovely
tradition instituted by St. John Paul II will be observed here at St. Mary's
Church. The Blessing of the Bambinelli will take place at the conclusion of
all the Masses on that day. Please join us in participating in this lovely
custom to honor Christ the King, whose birth we commemorate in our
hearts and in our homes during the Christmas Season.

give them directly to families in need. We need a volunteer to work at our
Glebe Road Office one day a week for 5 hours between 9 A.M. and 4 P.M.
to help us answer the phones and explain the program, process important
paperwork, and perform other critical administrative duties. Opportunity to
make a transformational difference in the lives of those who are in

ALIVE!
ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit
organization of volunteers from over 40 religious congregations and the
community working together to help those in need in Alexandria, Virginia.
Founded in 1969, ALIVE! is the largest private safety net for the needy in
the city of Alexandria, addressing short-term to long-term needs for those
less fortunate in the community. ALIVE! Is looking for several volunteers to
assist with the Food Program. Open positions include:
Food Program Coordinator: Person will be one of two personnel who would
coordinate the entire Food Program. He/she will work with ALIVE! Board
members, ALIVE! Program Chairs, and the Capital Area Food Bank to
coordinate and manage the food program. The food coordinator will be
required to attend several meetings each month.
Food Drive Coordinator: Person will be the lead to coordinate several food
drives every year and work with individuals and groups who are looking to
hold their own food drives.
Food Program Shopper: This person will reach out to ALIVE! Program
Chairs to understand food needs and conduct weekly shopping trips to the
Capital Area Food Bank. This will likely take 3-4 hours per week.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: On Saturday morning, November 22, volunteers
from St. Mary’s Parish and ALIVE! (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically)
will collect donated furniture and deliver it to families in need within the City
of Alexandria. If you can accompany one of ALIVE!’s trucks and help deliver

NATURALIZATION WORKSHOP VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are needed at monthly Saturday workshops to help clients fill out
applications for U.S. citizenship. No previous experience or foreign
language skills necessary. Training is provided the morning of the
workshop. IT volunteers are needed to assist with wirelessly networking
laptops and printers and providing IT troubleshooting and support
throughout the day as we help clients fill out applications for U.S. citizenship.
