During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. There will be little football commentary this week as this column had to be written well in advance due to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. All I will say in this regard is that I hope the Packers (that green and gold team) beat the Vikings. I have no idea how the Redskins handled San Francisco; I’m guessing in advance that it didn’t go well. Of course, I could be wrong! On to other topics, we have a number of things coming up. First, this Thursday our seniors, the Saints Joachim and Anne Society, sponsor their Bible Study program, as they do every first Thursday. The past two months saw only three participants however. For that reason they are giving it one more try this month. In the past it was normal to have ten to fifteen attendees. If the numbers do not go up this Thursday (December 4th) they will take a break from this monthly endeavor. It starts at 10:00 A.M. and concludes no later than 11:45 A.M. I try to be there each month as well to offer whatever guidance I can. For those over 50 this might be a good way to start the Advent season. Speaking of this new liturgical season which begins this weekend, we also have our usual Reflection Series. It begins this Tuesday evening at 7:30 P.M. in the church. It is a Holy Hour with a talk by one of us priests. It also includes some quiet time before the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. The theme this year is “Joy.” Fr. Barnes speaks this week, Fr. Ruskamp next week, and I do the following week. The last Tuesday of Advent will involve confessions being heard, as they will Monday evening as well. I will return to Advent in a moment. Before I do I also want to remind you that we have our annual Forty Hours devotion this year. It always concludes on our parish patronal feast, which is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. That means that these 40 hours of Adoration begin after the 8:00 A.M. Mass on Saturday, December 6th. We typically have a Holy Hour on First Saturday morning; it just won’t end this week, rather it will continue through Monday evening with the closing scheduled for 7:00 P.M. With the exception of Masses, with a Sunday included it always gets a bit interesting, we will have continuous Adoration. This requires that at least one person be praying before Our Eucharistic Lord at every moment. We have sign up sheets in the back of church. Saturday and Sunday late night/early morning may be the most difficult hours to fill, so I ask that you consider one of those hours. More importantly, I ask that you consider any hour during that time period for this too would be a wonderful way to make Advent the prayerful, preparatory time it really should be. That above statement brings me back to the new season of Advent, which again begins this weekend. Advent seems to be a more hectic time than Lent. Lent also is longer and is more penitential. Advent should be a truly prayerful time, although it often seems to take on more of a festive atmosphere. Many seem to think it is already Christmas, when these weeks are supposed to be preparing us for the celebration of Our Lord’s birth. As such I would encourage all of us to at least try to make this Advent, these next three and a half weeks a real time of prayer, confession, and spiritual renewal. We can do that by having an Advent wreathe in our homes and saying the weekly prayers that go with it. Also for children there is the Advent calendar. We can celebrate the special feast days, such as St. Nicholas’, St. Lucy’s, or Our Lady of Guadalupe. We could participate in any of the many charitable activities we find during this season (more on that next week). I pray we do something special this year for this Advent season. In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann First Sunday of Advent Page Three VOCATIONS PRO-LIFE CORNER Is Christ calling you to serve Him in others as a sister, brother, deacon or priest? During that time, the Lord gave me much light to know His attributes. The first attribute which the Lord gave me to know is His holiness....The holiness of God is poured out upon the Church of God and upon every living soul in it, but not in the same degree. Blessed be He a thousand times who desires it so. If life be harder, love makes it also stronger, and only this love, grounded on suffering, can carry the Cross of my Lord Jesus Christ. Love without egotism, without relying on self, but enkindling in the depth of the heart an ardent thirst to love and suffer for all those around us: a thirst that neither misfortune nor contempt can extinguish... I believe, O Lord; but strengthen my faith... Heart of Jesus, I love Thee; but increase my love. Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee; but give greater vigor to my confidence. Heart of Jesus, I give my heart to Thee; but so enclose it in Thee that it may never be separated from Thee.
