WE WELCOME THROUGH
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Charlotte Ann Retz
O Mary, Mother of God, you were foretold by the prophets,
foreshadowed by the patriarchs in types and figures, described by the
Evangelists, and saluted most graciously by the Angels. Lead us to the
wisdom of the Presence of God now and forever.
Saint Sophronius
The local NFL team enjoyed a bye last weekend, so I
have nothing to say about them this week, other than that they
will face Tampa Bay at home this weekend. My Packers had
their bye two weeks ago and returned to Green Bay to face the
Chicago Bears. Three weeks ago the Packers went down in
defeat against the Saints. In addition, their quarterback suffered
a minor hamstring injury which seemed to affect Aaron Rodgers
play the rest of that game. As such I think it’s safe to say the
Packers needed that bye week to get healthy and refocus.
Refocus they did! They hammered the Bears 55 to 17. They led
at the half 42 to nothing, allowing both the team and Rodgers to
match or set a few records. Obviously, in my opinion it was a
great game and hopefully a sign of what is to come as the
Packers face the Eagles this weekend, probably a more
formidable team. Needless to say then, I also hope they keep
their focus.
Speaking of focus, when it comes to our spiritual lives
we occasionally need that “bye week” as well. That is exactly
what a retreat is all about. No doubt I have spoken here of the
value of a yearly retreat. We priests are required by Church law
to make at least a five day retreat each year. I just concluded
mine. I can’t tell you how it went as I write this column before I
left for the retreat. I can tell you I was looking forward to it. I
needed the opportunity to also refocus and hopefully grow a bit
spiritually. Every other year the diocese provides our retreats.
During the even numbered years we are on our own and can go
anywhere we wish for that retreat. We can take a private retreat
or a directed one. I have only done the private retreat once and
that was a number of years ago. I prefer the directed retreat
because with that there typically are three conferences given
each day by a priest or even a bishop. I find that this option
usually is better for me. The retreat I was on this past week was
up in Boston. In advance I knew that at least two other Arlington
priests were also attending. I have been to this retreat center
twice before, but not recently. Actually it was over six years ago
that I was last there. Again my hope is that it was a good retreat,
a spiritually fruitful one, that helped me be more focused on
Christ, on holiness, and on my duties to you. Please be assured
that all of you were remembered in my prayers this past week
and at Mass.
Something that also happened a week ago, on
Saturday evening, November 8th, was the annual wine tasting
gala sponsored by our Catholic Daughters. This has proved to
be a wonderful evening of some great wines, some unbelievably
good food, and an outstanding opportunity to socialize with fellow
parishioners and guests. In addition, it is a fundraiser for the
Catholic Daughters. Everyone seemed to have a fantastic time.
I’m sure the wine helped, but it truly was a very special night. As
they had last year, there was also some musical entertainment.
In light of all of this I want to extend some words of gratitude.
Mary Petrino and Debbie Weatherly headed up the effort. A
number of other Catholic Daughters assisted. For the second
year Angela Logomasini was the wine expert who provided
commentary on each of the servings; there were five wines.
Martha Gabriel and Kathy Pluth worked on the spiritual
reflections that are always part of the evening, whose theme was
the papacy. Rebecca Littig along with two others provided the
musical interludes. Everything about the evening was excellent.
The tradition of meeting high expectations certainly was
maintained. I don’t know how well the Catholic Daughters did as
far as funds raised, but they do many wonderful things for our
parish, so my hope is that they did well. Again, I thank them for
providing this evening.
In Christ,
Fr. Kleinmann

starting at 7:15 P.M. in the church choir loft. The choir sings at the 8:30

Colleen Carroll Campbell will be discussing her spiritual memoir, My Sisters
the Saints, at Barnes & Noble, (Potomac Yard, 3651 Jefferson Davis Hwy)
November 23, 2014 at 2:00 P.M.
In My Sisters the Saints, Campbell blends her personal narrative of spiritual
seeking, trials, stumbles, and breakthroughs with the stories of six women
saints who profoundly changed her life: Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux,
Faustina of Poland, Edith Stein of Germany, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and
Mary of Nazareth. Drawing upon the rich writings and examples of these
extraordinary women, the author reveals Christianity's liberating power for
women and the relevance of the saints to the lives of contemporary
Christians.

DIVINE MERCY CORNER
It is my constant endeavor to plead
for Mercy for the world. I unite myself
closely with Jesus and stand before
Him as an atoning sacrifice on behalf
of the world. God will refuse me
nothing when I entreat Him with the
voice of His Son. My sacrifice is
nothing in itself, but when I join it to
the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, it
becomes all-powerful and has the
power to appease divine wrath.
(St. Faustina, Diary 482)

forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their
duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe
from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return
home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for
Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
