Especially if a picture is worth a thousand words, then the NYS newsletter did not hold a candle (nor solarpowered light) to the “Israel21C Newsletter” (Vol. 692!) - that I also just received - which “… offers topical and timely reports on how Israelis from all walks of life and religion, innovate, improve and add value to the world… show[ing] how Israeli efforts have contributed incalculably to the advancement of health-care, environment, technology, culture, and global democratic values worldwide.” The lead article featured the development of an eTree – a “revolutionary ecological installation from Israel’s Sologic [that] provides free wireless Internet, charging stations for electronic devices, nighttime lighting, and water coolers for humans and dogs – all powered by a ‘canopy’ of solar panels.” In the spirit of “Maaseh Avot Siman LaBanim – the actions of our Biblical ancestors are models for subsequent generations” - back in his days of yore, our patriarch Abraham had already planted in Be’er Sheva an “eTree” – an “eshel tree” (Gen. 21:33) Rashi cites the Midrashic views that the eshel was either an orchard that produced the fruit from which Avraham and Sara would feed their continuous stream of visitors, or the inn itself in which the guests would stay. In his commentary to the Talmud (Sota 10a – Sunday-morning shiur, stay tuned), Rashi further observes that eshel – alef, shin, lamed – can be an acronym for the services and arrangements that Avraham and Sara provided: akhila (eating), shetiya (drinking), and either lina (sleeping accommodations) or levaya (escorting upon the guests’ departure). It was only upon the basis of this hospitality that Avraham could effectively deliver on the second portion of that verse – Vayikra sham be-Shem Hashem E-l Olam – calling out in the name of the L-rd, bringing society closer to a belief in G-d. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Lawrence Teitelman Disclaimer: this Page was printed on a device not powered by an eTree. The Park Page Puzzle “Feast or Famine” This week’s Puzzle: Find the two feasts (mishteh) in our Parasha. Are there any others in the Torah? Solution to last week’s Puzzle: Named wells in the Torah include Be’er La-Chai Ro’i (Gen. 16:14), Esek (26:20), Sitna (26:21), Rechovot (26:22), and Shiva (26:33). Yasher koach to Susan Isler, Karen Klein, Rita Lenefsky, and Kal Talansky for their solutions.
