Drash v'DaSh: A Shabbat Message and Greeting “Give ‘n Take” About ten years ago, I attended a rabbinic conference of the National Council of Young Israel. In a session about Tzedaka, one of the panelists – a major philanthropist (aka gvir) – expressed his sentiments that he “enjoys giving charity, but doesn’t like people sticking their hands into [his] pockets”. In other words, he – and probably others like him – like to share their bounty and blessing, but on their own terms. In what may be the first public appeal for a Jewish cause, the Torah expresses its sentiments on the subject: “And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying: 'Speak to the children of Israel, that they take for Me an offering; of every man whose heart makes him willing shall take My offering’” (Ex. 25:1-2) The commentators observe that the verb employed twice by the text to describe the offering is counter-intuitive: “take” (yikchu), rather than “give”. Less noted but equally unexpected is the word for the offering itself: teruma. Though, prejudiced by our presumptions, we translate it as “offering” or “gift”, in reality, the more specific connotation is the act of removal, taking away for use at another location or for another purpose. This nuance is borne both in the Bible - e.g. Terumat Ha-Deshen, the removal of the ashes from the Altar - and especially in the Mishna, for example, the third chapter of Shekalim which uses the same root Tormin, to describe the wholesale withdrawal of coins from the treasury, for the purchase of sacrifices. The ultimate gift then perhaps is the one which is dear to us, from which it is difficult to depart, yet even as it is taken from us, our “heart is [still] willing.” Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Lawrence Teitelman Nach Yomi Study for February 21-27, per Rabbi Abramowitz’s Nach Yomi Companion.
