TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Montgomery, Alabama All Saints’ Day The Lord’s Day, November 2, 2014 THE ORDER FOR MORNING WORSHIP November 2, 2014 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. The Silent Meditation upon Entering the Sanctuary Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask Who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same, and He must win the battle! ~ Martin Luther The Welcome and Announcements [8:25 and 10:55 A.M.] The Prelude “Air on the G String” Mrs. Elizabeth V. Arnold, organ J. Mattheson The Striking of the Hour The Choral Introit “I Was Glad” C.H. Parry; arr. William Wymond † The Call to Worship † The Hymn No. 345 † The Confession of Our Faith † The Prayer of Adoration and Invocation † The Lord’s Prayer Mr. McRoberts Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might! For our help is in the name of the Lord Who made heaven and earth. The authenticating, inner essence of worship is being satisfied with Christ, prizing Christ, cherishing Christ, treasuring Christ. It encompasses all of life that flows from the heart. But it is tremendously relevant for understanding what worship services should be about. They are about “going hard after God.” When we say that what we do on Lord’s Day mornings is to “go hard after God,” what we mean is that we are going hard after satisfaction in God, and going hard after God as our prize, and going hard after God as our treasure, our soul-food, our heartdelight, our spirit’s pleasure. Or to put Christ in His rightful place—it means that we are going hard after all that God is for us in Jesus Christ, crucified and risen.” ~ John Piper “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” Apostles’ Creed Words may be found on the inside front cover of the Trinity Hymnal. Our Father Which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. † The Doxology Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. In the doxology we not only recognize the reality of the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost; but also, that we are worshipping with the heavenly host. The Reading of God’s Word † The Hymn No. 353 Romans 8:12-17 “I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord” [stanzas 1, 3, 5] The Morning Offering The Christian Greeting The Anthem “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” Johannes Brahms How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea, fainteth for the courts of the Lord; My soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God. How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts! Blest are they that dwell within Thy house; They praise Thy name evermore! How lovely is Thy dwelling place. The Sermon This text can be found in the Pew Bible on page 1201. Children aged four through kindergarten may leave to attend Children’s Church. Following the worship service, please pick up your children from the Children’s Chapel in the Covenant Building (E-100). On this day we emphasize the number of God’s people from Trinity Church that has been “gathered into one under Christ the Head …” the Bride that has gone before us (WCF 25:1), and we remember them as examples of faith and life (Hebrews 1:7). The Silent Meditation upon Entering the Sanctuary The Bible is an armory of heavenly weapons, a laboratory of infallible medicines, a mine of exhaustless wealth. It is a guidebook for every road, chart for every sea, a medicine for every malady, and a balm for every wound. Rob us of our Bible, and our sky has lost its sun. ~ Thomas Guthrie: Scottish Pastor and Writer (1803-1873) Scripture Calls Us to Worship Mr. McRoberts Hymn No. 580 – “Lead On, O King Eternal” Prayer Invoking the Nearness of God Scripture Reading ~ Romans 8:12-17 Hymn Medley of Preparation No. 575 – “Soldiers of Christ, Arise” “O Church, Arise” O church, arise, and put your armour on; Hear the call of Christ our Captain. For now the weak can say that they are strong, In the strength that God has given. With shield of faith and belt of truth, We'll stand against the devil's lies; An army bold, whose battle cry is Love, Reaching out to those in darkness. Our call to war, to love the captive soul, But to rage against the captor; And with the sword that makes the wounded whole, We will fight with faith and valour; When faced with trials on ev’ry side, We know the outcome is secure, And Christ will have the prize for which He died, An inheritance of nations. This text can be found in the Pew Bible on page 1201. Come see the cross, where love and mercy meet, As the Son of God is stricken; Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet, For the Conqueror has risen. And as the stone is rolled away And Christ emerges from the grave, This vict’ry march continues till the day Every eye and heart shall see Him. So Spirit, come, put strength in ev’ry stride, Give grace for ev’ry hurdle; That we may run with faith, to win the prize Of a servant, good and faithful. As saints of old still line the way, Retelling triumphs of His grace, We hear their calls, and hunger for the day When, with Christ, we stand in glory. Children in grades 1-5 are dismissed to attend their classes.
