Modi among world’s most powerful people
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his
debut among the world’s most powerful
people, ranked 15th on the Forbes list
topped by Russian President Putin who
pipped his US counterpart Obama for a
second year in a row. The list of 72 most
powerful people in the world also
included the names of Reliance
chairman Mukesh Ambani at 36th,
ArcelorMittal chairman Lakshmi Mittal
at 57th and Microsoft’s India-born CEO
Satya Nadella at 64th. On Modi, Forbes
said “India’s newest rock star doesn’t hail
from Bollywood. He is the newly-elected
prime minister who sailed into office in
May with a landslide victory, ushering
the BJP into power after decades of
control by the Gandhi dynasty.” Forbes
described him as a “Hindu nationalist”.
New aviation policy soon
Prime Minister Modi said the government
would soon come out with a new civil
aviation policy and that railways had
identified 20 projects in 10 sectors for
foreign direct investment. Modi, who
chaired a high-level meeting on
infrastructure, said states would be made
partners in working out the viability of the
proposed new international airports and
maintaining them in their territories.The
PM expressed satisfaction over the
beginning of work for Pakyong airport in
Sikkim. He said with the opening of a
second route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
and the thrust of Sikkim as an organic
state, the airport would cater to rising
demand for air services. Modi did not list
the 20 projects identified for FDI in
railways, the first after the government
allowed 100pc FDI in railways.
No takers for flats in cities
The stagnant property market has led
to the highest-ever unsold stock of 815
million sq ft of residential space across
six cities at the end of the Sept quarter
this year, said a Liases Foras report .
Cumulative sales were down 25pc from
the previous quarter, making it the
lowest since 2009. The real estate
research firm said investors have moved
out of the property market and are
pumping their money into equities,
which is giving higher returns. “This is
the highest-ever unsold inventory in the
history of India’s residential market.
Prices have peaked not only in Mumbai,
but across the country,” said Pankaj
Kapoor, MD of Liases Foras. Last year,
the unsold stock was 711 million sq ft.
These ready but vacant flats could take
as much as four years to sell. The regions
surveyed in the report include the
Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR),
the National Capital Region (NCR),
Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and
Pune. They contribute around 70pc of
the total apartments built in India.
Banks asked to send cheque alerts
To clamp down on cheque-related fraud
cases, RBI has asked banks to alert
account holders by a phone call and
contact the base branch in case of nonhome cheques before clearing high
value payments. RBI also asked banks
to send an SMS alert to payer/drawer
when cheques are received for clearing
and examine cheques under UV lamp
for clearance beyond Rs 2 lakh. The
central bank further said multilevel
checking should be done before clearing
cheques above Rs 5 lakh.
