I would like to extend a special invitation to each of you to join us for the
annual membership meeting Saturday,
November 8, 3:00 p.m. at BJC. We
will be meeting in the Mt Evans room. The format for this meeting will be
different than in years past. We will
not have a guest speaker, rather a
round table discussion with the membership in attendance. I am particularly
interested in your thoughts and ideas on the direction of the association, where
you would like to see us go in the coming months. I would also like to have
an open discussion centered around the future of general aviation in Colorado. This is your opportunity to weigh in, get information and interact with other
aviators in the state. Please join us! Speaking of the future of aviation, I just wrapped up a brief (1 day) whirlwind
stay at the NBAA in Orlando, Florida. I was completely amazed at the size and
diversity of the tradeshow exhibitors. It would have been a massive undertaking
to even attempt to see it all in one day. I did however find the Colorado display
and they did us proud! Kudos to the Aeronautics Division and the represented
airports for putting Colorado on the radar! I also listened in on the UAS session
which was very interesting and informative. A panel of distinguished gentlemen
took us through the pros and cons as well as addressing many questions from the
audience. Much to my surprise, as I exited the convention hall, a gentleman was
flying a UAS looking at traffic patterns and flows. It was fun and interesting to
watch him fly the UAS and record the information. And by the way, he was a
private pilot. I would like to extend my personal congratulations to the 2 newest Laureates
in the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame. Charlie Johnson and Roy Morgan were
inducted this past month, both gentlemen very deserving of the honor. Special
Recognition Award went to Beryl "Skip" Newberg and President's Volunteer of
the Year went to Stephen Kelly.We are lucky to have such great aviators in our
state and I encourage you to seek them out and get to know them and hear their
stories. As we begin to wind down 2014, I would like to thank everyone who has volunteered and/or served in CPA. This organization cannot function without the
countless volunteers and the time they give to serve the membership. That being

said, I am looking for a few good people to step up into some vacant spots for
this coming year. I am looking for a Chair and Co-chair for the Rocky Mountain
Aviation Expo. The planning for the Expo, which is scheduled for June 2015
should begin before the end of the year. Several members of past Expo committees will continue to serve on the 2015 committee. If you are interested, please
contact me right away. Also, with a big Thank You to Ryan Carlson for serving this year as the Membership Chair, we will be looking to replace him in that position. And last, but
not least, I will be forming the planning team for the 2015 Colorado Aviation
Meet and Greet, or the Block Party as it has affectionately been tagged. One
more thing to make sure is on your planning calendar, the CPA Holiday Party
coming up in December. See you at the membership meeting!

A new place to RON

Flying nonstop from Denver to Alabama (79J South Alabama Regional) in
our Cessna P 210 is doable with a strong tailwind but flying four to five hours stops being fun and feels like the trip will never end. Our custom has been to
overnight in towns with casinos because Drew enjoys playing poker. Flying
east we have stopped at Tunica and Biloxi, Mississippi. Both have casinos and
hotels with good rates for poker players. I like Biloxi because of the beach and
the seafood. But after our last experience of headwinds and detours around
MOAs, (six hours twenty minutes of flying ) we decided to look for another
overnight destination. If it stops being fun then fix it.
Normally we stop at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Tulsa on the return trip
because headwinds are the norm and we can make Tulsa in just a bit over four
hours. On our most recent trip we had planned to make Tulsa the overnight stop
on both the flight to Alabama and on the return. Learning that the Hard Rock
Casino was sold out on our return date we started shopping for another casino in
Oklahoma or somewhere close to our half way point.
An Internet search found several others to consider. The Grand Casino near
Shawnee, Oklahoma (just east of OK City) had the things that make a good stop
over for us. -- an airport nearby, a poker room and a hotel. If the casino has an
airport shuttle then that makes it even more attractive. The Grand doesn't have a
shuttle (yet).

found the number for
the Shawnee FBO
(KSNL). I called with
our ETA and asked
about rental cars. Keenan English suggested we use one of
their crew cars! I later
learned that Keenan
was the airport assistant manager. When
we arrived, two hours
late due to headwinds,
MOAs and a late departure, Fred Treiber,
airport supervisor, was

there to greet us, provided the tie down and gave us the keys to the car! WOW,
What more could we ask.
Fred gave us driving directions to the casino and we were off in one of the airports crew cars. Beautiful weather for a new adventure.
The Grand Casino is not a Vegas size . hotel casino – it’s better. More human
sized and comfortable with short walks to everything. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel room has all the amenities of a five star hotel, even a
special makeup towel! We ate at the sports bar restaurant, good Mexican food
and great service. Drew learned that poker players receive a huge room discount
dependent upon how many hours they play. If you know Drew then you know
how much he needs to be encouraged to spend more time at the poker tables (i.e
not much!). By midnight he had won enough to pay our hotel and restaurant bill
plus much of the airplane fuel bill. Full service fuel was less than we paid in
Tulsa. Another welcomed surprise.
Bottom line here is we like the hotel (comfortable, quiet, lots of amenities),
casino (poker tables and special room rates for poker players) and the hotel
restaurants (good food, great service, not too pricey). We really appreciate the
hospitality from the FBO. Fuel prices were better than we expected. Service
could not have been better. The loan of the crew car sealed the deal that we will
make this a regular stop on our trips to Alabama. This is a great place to RON
(remain overnight) going east or west. Thank you Kenyan and Fred, new friends
at the Shawnee FBO.

Aero News Update: Don’t Bring Your Fly-In Here!
Fly-ins Are As Old As Aviation Itself And Everybody Loves Them… Well,
Maybe Not Everybody In Oklahoma
Judy Birchler founded the LadiesLoveTaildraggers organization so that she
and like-minded women could get together and enjoy their passion for “real”
airplanes. Like all aviation minded organizations, fly-ins are a fun way to get
together, and you would think any airport would welcome a group like this.
Apparently, you would be wrong if you are planning to fly to Oklahoma’s Lake
Murray State Park Airport.
Birchler thought the beautiful setting of a lodge, complete with airport, at Lake
Murray, OK might be a perfect place for the LadiesLoveTaildraggers to hold a
regional fly-in. However, when Birchler made the call to find out about setting

it up, the response was, “Don’t bring your fly-in here.” Birchler said, “Don’t get
me wrong, their refusal to even consider allowing our group to come to their airport had nothing to do with our ladies. It had everything to do with not wanting
any group of airplanes landing at their strip.”
Birchler said it was obvious that the person she was talking to knew nothing
about the airport or that they even had one, and had no idea what the term “flyin” meant. Realizing that she was talking to someone who was, to say the least,
not aware of what the state park offered, asked for a phone number for someone
that actually had something to do with the airport.
Birchler said on her blog, “I was convinced the conversation I just had was a
‘twilight-zone’ moment and things would get much better when I spoke to Carol,
the Park Manager. It did not. Carol, an employee of the State of Oklahoma, apparently views the airport as a liability rather than an asset to the park; something they have to put up with until such time the state closes it, probably due
to inactivity. She absolutely refused to discuss the possibility of a fly-in there.
Airplanes are apparently discouraged from flying in.”
On her blog Birchler opined, “I got the distinct impression that because it is
a state park and not a private enterprise there was no need to worry about the
financial success of the airport and maintaining business. Regardless of the
fact that our showing up would have increased the utilization of the airport, the
lodge, the restaurant, and bucks would have been spent didn’t matter at all. I’m
pretty certain that if this had been a privately owned rather than publicly owned
airport/resort they would have been happy to have our airplanes fly in, spend
money, and use their facilities for 3 days.”

Within hours after Judy emailed the OK Aeronautics Commission, Victor Bird,
Director, Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, responded:
“I am sorry that you and others have been misinformed by park management
regarding Lake Murray State Park Airport (1F1). The airport is a publicly owned
airport open to the public and all types, kinds and classes of aeronautical activities. By statute, the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission has primary jurisdiction
insofar as the operation of the airport. Please contact me should you have any
additional questions. Thank you for your email.”

Up and Away with Youth in the Air

I’m participating in an activity I wish to share and hope to inspire other pilots
to consider. I am a Telluride Rotary Club member. For a number of years
now, when able, I have offered airplane rides in our Cessna R182, N4447R,
to both the foreign exchange students the Telluride Rotary Club hosts and to
our outbound local exchange students within the RYE program: Rotary Youth
Exchange. The Club has had as many as ten outbound and five inbound students
in one year with continuity of student exchanges annually.
This to be a fun activity for the inbound foreign exchange students and an opportunity for the local outbound students to gain geographical perspective and
take photos of their hometown area to share as ambassadors of America to other
nations. Recently I came to realize what a unique experience such a general
aviation flight is to most of the inbound exchange students. Specifically, what
a unique American experience it is and how it speaks of the freedoms and individual responsibilities inherent in our democratic society.

students for their
first small aircraft
flight, two boys
: one from India
and one from
Sweden, and
three girls: one
each from Taiwan, Brazil, and
New Zealand. The boy from
India exclaimed
that no one he knew ever flew in a small, privately owned aircraft and he is not
aware of any such future possibility in his country. The Tawainese girl agreed
and the Brazilian girl, though not sure if general aviation opportunities are available in Brazil, has never known of anyone who experienced a general aviation
flight. To date I’ve flown exchange students from or going to sixteen countries:
Austria, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, and Turkey.

In addition to the RYE flights I have given rides to Girl Scouts at the completion
of aviation badge requirements and with parental written approval (they cannot
take private flights as an official part of the GS program), Boy Scouts, and a local youth mentoring program, One to One, for both the youth and their mentors. The advantage to these flights is that the schedule is dependent only upon an
agreed time with the youth, their responsible adult, and myself. I’m not stressed
with the necessity of a charitable flight needed during a specified time frame. I
choose calm, clear days for an enjoyable first flight experience.
[Ed note: The Boy Scouts get an airplane ride as part of the Aviation Merit
Badge but not the Girl Scouts? Really?]
During 2011, the celebration of the one hundred year anniversary of the first
American woman to earn a pilot's license, Harriet Quimby, and in association
with Women of Aviation International goals I flew numerous One to One participants. I hosted a one day familiarization of career opportunities in aviation
for girls with their mentors and parents, also open to the public, at the Telluride
airport.
Telluride Regional Airport offered the space and an airport tour and Great Lakes
Airlines sent women from their organization in the flight departments, accounting, and public relations to speak with at the gathering. The goal is to encourage girls to consider aviation & aviation associated careers and what courses to
expect to take in high school to launch into further education to attain entrance
into those careers.

I encourage Colorado pilots to reach out to organizations such as their local
Rotary, Girl Scout, and Boy Scout Clubs as well as other supportive youth programs to offer a flight experience that may result in great impact on the life of a
youth. That impact may even lead to a direction in career and positive influence
on those around him/her that the pilot may not consider or realize until after the
flight, even long after the flight. In the meantime, the wide smiles, happy waves,
and hugs received whenever the involved youth are encountered in the community are greater "payment" than the pilot could ever count in dollars.
[Ed note: Liability insurance is always a concern. There are a number of Colorado chapters of the EAA that participate in the Young Eagles program. Many
of these youth programs have arrangements with EAA to provide flights for the
kids. EAA YE has a blanket policy that covers these activities in addition to your
