Patient care, like other technically complex and high risk services, is an interdependent process carried out
by teams of individuals with advanced technical training who have varying roles and decision making
responsibilities. While technical training assures proficiency in specific tasks, it does not address the
potential for error deriving from communication and decision making in dynamic environments.
In response to these challenges, the aviation industry has developed training focussed on the role of human
factors on teams working in complex environments. These techniques have been successfully developed
and applied by Global Air Training, working with NHS Trusts and other healthcare organisations. The TRM
training course demonstrates the applicability of lessons proven in aviation to patient safety and draws upon
case studies and experience in NHS Trusts.

“Modern health care is delivered in a highly complex, pressured environment often involving the care of
vulnerable seriously ill patients. More than almost any other industry in which risks occur, health care is
reliant on people, more often than machines, to make decisions, exercise the judgement and execute the
techniques which will determine the outcome for a patient.”
