The Giving Tree
During the season of Advent, beginning
November 29/30, the Giving Tree will be
set up in the side alcove, placed there by
the Social Justice Ministry. It will be filled
with opportunities for giving to others in
need in the local area. This year we will be
supporting Carolyn’s Place, Apple Rehab Center, St. Vincent
DePaul Mission, and Pleasant View Manor. Please take a
moment and take a tag from the tree. Then purchase the gift
listed on the ornament tag, wrap it and tape the tag on the
outside of the gift. Please return all gifts to the church before
or after Mass no later than Sunday, December 21. Thank you
for your continued support with parish outreach work.
Advent Wreath Making & More…
The tradition of the lighting of the Advent
wreath is a powerful ritual which ties families
and generations together. The circular wreath
is enhanced with four candles- usually three
purple and one rose colored (this one
symbolizes that Jesus is very near.) A candle is lit each week
in anticipation of Christmas. Lighting the candles(s) in
darkness is a powerful experience and delivers the strong
message that Christ is the Light of the World.
Please join us on Saturday, November 29th at 5:00p.m. in
the church hall as we come together for an Advent
Workshop that will feature making an Advent wreath for
each family and an Advent reflection with a wreath blessing
by Father Jim.
Sign up at the entrances of the Church or call the parish
office at 860-274-9273. Pre-registration is necessary along
with $5.00 fee per family. Hot Chocolate & Cookies will be
served.
National Vocations Awareness Week
Did you know that in our country, compared to 50 years
ago, there are 20,000 fewer priests and 129,000 fewer
religious sisters? At the same time, the Catholic population
has continued to grow steadily. Many factors have
contributed to the decline: growing secularism, a
lengthened period of adolescence, attitudes about celibacy,
etc. During Vocation Awareness week, please pray that
young people in today’s society will hear and repond to
God’s call. And do your part to encourage them to consider
the priesthood and religious life.
One Vocation Leads to Another
“Let us not forget that Christian marriage is a vocation to
holiness in the full sense of the word, and that the example
of holy parents is the first condition favorable for the
flowering of priestly and religious vocations.”- Pope Benedict XVI
Priesthood Discernment Evenings
The Vocation Office will be holding monthly
Priesthood Discernment Evenings at St. Thomas
Seminary (467 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield, CT) for men
between the age of 18 and 55 who would like to get
information about the Catholic Priesthood and meet with
other men who feel God might be calling them to serve as a
priest.
We will meet Thursday (11/20; 12/18) 6:00-7:30 p.m. Pizza
will be served. Please call the Vocation Office at 860-2425573 for more information.
Vocations: Oil and time; light and patience –
requirements for discipleship. Keep your eyes open! In time,
you will see what you are called to do. If your call is to
become a priest, deacon, brother or sister, call Fr. Jim at the
parish office, 860-274-9273. He would like to speak to you.
Prayer of Vocations
Almighty and eternal God,
in your unfailing love you provide
ministers for your Church.
We pray for those whom you call
to serve the Church of Hartford
as priests or religious brothers and sisters.
Inspire in them a generous response.
Grant them courage and vision to
serve your people
May their lives and service call your
people to respond to the presence
of your Spirit among us
that, faithful to the Gospel and
hope of Jesus the Christ, we may:
announce glad tidings to the poor
proclaim liberty to captives,
set prisoners free
and renew the face of the earth.
