Much of the food we collect will be delivered to the Catholic Charities Fall Harvest Food Drive, to help needy people throughout the Diocese of Arlington. Like most parishes in the diocese, Saint Mary’s has been encouraged to support the fall food drive for Catholic Charities. The Catholic Charities food ministry has greatly expanded. Since participation in our parish’s traditional Thanksgiving food deliveries has been declining, the decision was made to support the Catholic Charities effort this year. Please take a brown bag and return it next weekend with as many of the listed items as you can contribute. Thank you in advance for your great support!!! HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH Email: [email protected] This Sunday, November 9th: SNL- Healed (5 - 8:15 pm) After Mass and dinner, we’ll have games, music, small groups, and a short talk about Confirmation. This semester we’ll be learning about the sacraments, which the Church calls “personal and privileged encounters with Jesus Christ.” Sometimes because we experience sacraments every week, it’s easy to take them for granted or wonder what they’re all about. Come and learn more about these 7 ways that God uses to break into our world and our lives. CLC (Catholic Life Communities) Advocacy Sign-Up This Weekend Boys: Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:15 pm in Room 5 Girls: Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 pm in Room 7 (5:00 - 8:15 pm) After Mass and dinner, we’ll have a short talk and a time of Eucharistic Adoration. There will be some music, but we’ll also have quiet time to be still and rest in the presence of Jesus. In the middle of schoolwork, stress, busyness, and drama, we’re offered a chance to just be present and experience God’s love. All teens are welcome. On November 15th & 16th, our parish will be holding a Virginia Catholic Conference Advocacy Sign-up Sunday. Our Catholic faith compels us to seek the common good in public life. The Virginia Catholic Conference, established by our Virginia bishops, is one quick and easy way to advocate for legislation that does just that, supporting life, protecting the family, and the poor and vulnerable. Learn more about the Conference’s work and how you can become involved at www.vacatholic.org. COUNSELING Christmas Outreach Next Sunday, November 16th - Adoration Our Christmas program benefits hundreds of needy people in our community and puts smiles on faces of people of all ages. Saint Mary’s is blessed with wonderful volunteers and generous givers. Please consider participating in any or all of the following ways: • Sign up after Mass during the weekends in November to bring a gift for a child, or a special adult referred to us by County or other organizations; • Bring a gift for a non-designated child, teen, or adult, including senior citizens; • Organize a group adoption of a needy County family for Christmas gifts and food; • Bring food for the Fall Harvest and Christmas Food collections; • Make a monetary donation. Give a check marked ‘Holiday Fund’ to our receptionist. • Assist with sign-up weekends in November, or during the weekends of November 29th & 30th and December 6th & 7th when gifts will be brought to Saint Mary’s, and as needed during the week after the gifts are collected; • Deliver Christmas gifts to Fairfax County families on December 13th. Please contact Chris Mikrut, [email protected], or Carol Mayfield, [email protected] for more information. PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Samaritan Fund Through the Samaritan Fund we are able to help men, women and children in need, regardless of their race, creed or national origin. This week your donations assisted a single, unemployed woman who needed help with her rent. Please pray for those in need and donate to Saint Mary’s Samaritan Fund, so that we’ll be able to continue responding as we have done, with prayer and financial assistance. During this important and rewarding ministry, we open our doors so that people who have nowhere to sleep at night can come inside to avoid dangerous freezing temperatures. We feed them a warm dinner, welcome them with evening services and activities, watch over them all night, feed them breakfast, and send them off with bagged lunches to take with them for the day. All this takes a lot of volunteers, especially if we get storms and keep the guests during the day, as we did last year. One of our lessons learned from last year is that we need a Volunteer Coordinator to help organize and recruit volunteers. Many of you have told us you feel blessed to have served in this ministry. If you can help coordinate volunteers, please contact Anita Keeler and Mary Jo O'Connell, 703-250-1564, or [email protected] or Carol Mayfield at [email protected]. The vehicles are given at no cost to people in need of transportation. These vehicles transform people’s lives because transportation allows them to obtain employment in places that were previously inaccessible and it makes them self sufficient because they now have a means to get to work.
