DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME
First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12
This reading from the Prophet Ezekiel tells of the streaming,
healing waters that flow from the temple. These waters
restore life to the river’s inhabitants as well as the fruit
bearing trees along its banks. It is believed that the water
signifies blessings, whereas the lack of signifies trouble,
hardship.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
Paul compares us to a building whose foundation has been
laid by Jesus. As the people of God, we can only be solid if
we are grounded in Christ.
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Near the time of Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and
saw the temple had become a marketplace. He became
angry and proceeded to drive out the vendors and livestock.
Jesus spoke of destroying the temple and rebuilding it in
three days. The Jews did not know Jesus was speaking of
his body, but when his resurrection from the dead came to
pass, his disciples remembered what Jesus had said and
came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had
spoken.

CHOIR PRACTICE has resumed every Monday night,
7:30 p.m., at the church until 9:00 p.m. Members of the
choir have their choice of singing/playing at the 5 p.m.
Mass on Saturday, or the 9 a.m. Mass or the 11:30 a.m.
Mass on Sunday. Anyone with musical ability, from
grade six on up, is most welcome. So if you play an
instrument—keyboard, guitar, flute, clarinet, others—or
sing well, consider joining. It can be a wonderful way to
help and serve others.
Practice for the Christmas season and the church
dedication, as well as the individual Sunday Masses, has
begun.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults – is
meant for those who have never been baptized but have
questions about Christ and all that He has taught; have
been baptized in other Christian traditions but have an
interest in Catholicism and the Catholic Church; are
already baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist
and/or Confirmation. If you are interested or know of
someone who has expressed an interest in the Roman
Catholic Faith, please call the rectory office.

Quo Vadis Night of Discernment – for young men of
high school age - Monday, November 10th at Our Lady of
the Lake Church, Sparta. The evening begins at 7PM
with Adoration in the Church, followed by a light meal
and fraternity, and will end with a talk and discussion led
by one of our priests. The evening will end at 9PM. The
purpose of this Quo Vadis Night is to help young men
recognize God’s presence in their life and begin to

THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP
In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently
mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water
flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing
life to all living things, offering fresh healing to God’s
people.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon
the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that,
Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves
temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells
not only with them, but in them.
For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be
identified with the presence of God and the only place
where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a
different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the
temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a
dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in
God’s presence. No longer was a place to be the focus
of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ,
becomes the center of our worship.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
For several weeks, we have considered penance as a
sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other
sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the
Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick,
long associated with penance.
The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring
for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray and lay
their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil, and
giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites of
penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was
therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus
often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of
forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly,
however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick
was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve,
or even to be drunk as a medicine. As early as the
second century, bishops were therefore urging that
priests should be the ones to visit those separated by
illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of
consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the
non-ordained faithful to bring home was relatively shortlived.

“You are God’s building. Thanks to the favor God
showed me I laid a foundation as a wise masterbuilder might do, and now someone else is building
upon it. Everyone, however, must be careful how he
builds. No one can lay a foundation other than the
one that has been laid, namely Jesus Christ…Are
you not aware that you are the temple of God, and
that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”
The church we reflect upon today, a major basilica in
Rome, is called ‘the mother of all the churches of Rome
and the world.’ It has a special place in the history of the
church.
We move from a physical building and are reminded by
St. Paul that we too are temples of the Spirit. We are
God’s dwelling among His people. The words of John’s
gospel ‘and the Word became flesh and He dwelt among
us’ speak not only of Mary and the Incarnation, but also
of the reality, that God lives in and among us.
How meaningful as we read these words is the fact that
the person sitting and praying next to us, is a temple of
God’s Spirit. How challenging for us to recognize the
presence of the Lord in those of our family, those with
whom we work. How beautiful we are as we reflect with
Paul that ‘I live, now, not I, but Christ lives in me.’
As I spend time in prayer, whether in a magnificent
cathedral or humble chapel, the fact is that the Lord is
present and that is what really matters. As I spend time
with family and friends, and recognize the presence of
the Lord in every individual that is what really matters.
The next time I pass a church, may I remember that His
dwelling is there and also with me. In the words of Oscar
Romero, Christ is the Master builder, we are the
ministers.
