Whether that may be turning BJ’s 18 page menu into no more than 8 pages. Or when looking at a Chinese Menu’s instead of telling your waitress or waiter what number you would like, and be able to actually read it to them. Or another way instead of just looking at a menu and handing it back to them when you are done is if the customer can learn something. Whether it be culturals, facts, traditions, the items on the money, or just the business itself. Having the menu’s interact with people at the same time will allow them to gain knowledge each place they go. This can be very beneficially to children with having a learning environment even when they go out to dinner with their families. Through out the next 11 weeks I will post my research that I have found on restaurants and how they view there menus, are they beneficial, are they to long, no visual images to look at, no education information on them, or to much unnecessary information. With this I will write a 20 page paper on it to conclude my thoughts and findings, and then reproduce a menu that I find would be more efficient when you are eating out at your favorite restaurant. Case Study 1 After researching a little bit more about menu’s and restaurants, I found an interesting article on how they think you should make a restaurant menu. Its interesting to see how they think when planning out a menu and what would be most efficient. Everyone has their own idea on what they want their menu to look like. Regardless if it is a ma and pa restaurant or Chilis . I feel like sometimes restaurants don’t realize how important menus really are, its a very essential item to them. This is what your customers are going to order off of, their first opinion other than walking into the place on how they really carry themselves as a business. When I sit down and look at a menu I want something that is small enough but with plenty of choices. Not a 20 page long menu I would get overwhelmed and have no idea what I want, or really what they offer. When it is a small menu I feel that they have more specialized items and can focus on the food more. Case Study 2 This week I was talking to one of my classmates about menu’s and what would be helpful for them. when ordering at a restaurant. He then later told me that he is diabetic and that carbohydrates would be very helpful on the menu for him so he didn’t have to figure it out himself when dealing with health problems. We also talked about that it would be helpful if the menu’s had information about where the food came whether it was local or national. But rather to just tell a little story about where it came from so people would have an idea on where there food first was. I found all of this information very helpful and useful when designing a menu. Capstone | 2 Case Study 3 It is essential to know what is needed for a successful menu. After researching about menu design it should reflect the restaurant itself as much as possible. You need to look at the layout, colors that match the logo and the restaurant, and decide whether it is a formal or casual menu. You also need to keep in mind the location and cultural of the restaurant and the people that you are serving to. You want a font and color palette that reflects the theme and keeps the same feeling continuing throughout the whole branding process. “For example, if you are opening a Mexican themed restaurant, vibrant colors such as red and green would be good choices for a menu. These same colors would look out of place on the menu of a French bistro or Italian restaurant. A French bistro may have a classic script font or simple plain font, while a sports bar or other casual restaurants might have a less formal or playful font. Another important thing is to keep in mind that the font can’t be too small or hard too read. Before deciding on an exact menu that you may want for your restaurant, it is always good to look at your competitors around you to see how their menus look. Are they easy to read? Are they successful by displaying all their food as much as possible within their menu? Does their menu really fit the company’s needs and style? Case Study 4 In this post we are going to look at critiques that have been made on restaurant menu’s. It is essential to know the difference between a strong and weak menu and what needs to be changed to correct it all. After looking over this website it is interesting to see what they find very successful and conflicting when looking at the menu’s. Take a look at the top 12 menu’s for 2012, and see what you think yourself. http://www.underconsideration.com/artofthemenu/archives/best_ of_2012.php I find menu #1 ranked for 2012, very interesting, it is quit different and unique. In some ways I find it very hard to read and really understand what it is displaying and offering for their restaurant. I don’t even understand what the images are and what they are displaying as an option to order food. Especially since it is posted up by the ceiling it isn’t very close to anyone to read and hold in their hands. I think this would be a great idea if it was an actual menu handed out or a poster for a new piece of food but not for the whole menu. I really like menu # 11, I think the inside of the menu with all the information is nicely displayed and easy to read. Looking at this menu almost reminds of Chipotles menu because it is so contemporary, easy to read, and has a nice consistent lay out. Although the critics of this menu did not really like it because of the strong complex illustrations on the front of the menu. I find them very affective and appealing. This menu gives me the sense of feeling like a 50’s dinner with images like that as well. Capstone | 3 Case Study 5 A few things that I found interesting is the physiology of a menu and how it reacts and goes through a humans brain. What do they see first when they look at a menu, where do they look next after that, where do their eyes take them and how come they go there? Is there a pattern that people read menu’s in. Most designers as well as restaurant owners don’t even think about when designing a menu. What is really the background of a menu for a restaurant and other then through a designers set of eyes how are the customers viewing the menu? Does it flow easily, do you get lost, is there too much to read? Many people do not know the hours and thought that goes into designing a menu and the facts and process really behind it all. Case Study 6 While researching for my paper I came across something that I found was very interesting. A restaurant’s menu is like a business card, it introduces the customers and the design should complement the service, food quality, and the price range. Menus are definitely not given the budget, time, and effort that they deserve. More and more restaurants are realizing the importance of design on average. They know that a menu is one of the most important tools for the business and it is what sells their products and keeps them open. The chefs look at the popularity of each item and they forecast customer preferences and by that they are able to plan purchases and quantities from previous sales. After reading a little more about this I find it very interesting that their is a relationship between one another. Case Study 7 As I come to week 11 with my final paper, I look back on what I learned. I know have a better understanding of menu concepts and psychology of menus. There is a lot that goes into making a menu and the thought process behind it. We have looked at what makes a menu strong and what does not. As stated in my paper a menu is a restaurants business card basically, it represents them. The human eye looks at a menu a certain way, it is known as a Eye Movement Pattern. This is a normal standard of the human eye and how they look at menus. Customers are most likely to order from the top half of the menu rather then the bottom half. A person is also more likely to look at something in a grid layout that is structured. Where to go from here is to make a menu that has sufficient information and layout. Something that has a new taste to restaurants menus. Capstone | 4 Inspiration Board Capstone | 5 Capstone | 6 Capstone Menu 1 Logo Redesign Original This is the original logo that Los Tres Garcias used. It has a little Mexican boy with a sombrero along with the shape of Mexico behind it. Feedback: To create a logo that did not involve green, red, or white or use the shape of Mexico. Capstone | 8 Final Logo Los Tres Garcias This is the final logo for Los Tres Garcias. It is very different from the original. I decided to use a dark brown instead of the standard green, red, and white that is typical of Mexican restaurants logos. I just chose a simple but fun font that really represented Los Tres Garcias. It has a black background with a simple light gray floral pattern to add a little something to the menu. This would be a 11x17 folded menu front and back. The logo and titles are in a light purple color with a beautiful script font. Everything the restaurant offers is in a white font with the price to the right of it. Feedback: The review I received back from people for this menu was it was clean and sophisticated. They liked the black rich background with the subtle floral design in the background. The light pop of purple also pops really well with everything else on the menu. It is only a front and back menu which saves a lot of time from turning so many pages which is great. There old menu was very long and overwhelming so I wanted something that was simple & contemporary. I decided to use red and blue boxes for different categories of the menu. This new menu is very short and to the point compared to the old one. Capstone | 22
