The Winchester Apple Cross cyclocross had 563 racers who participated - up 130 from last year. It was very

Trail work at continued at Sherando Park in Stephens City. Cory Smith and Jon Turkel have coordinated the
work. Jonathan Hanson and Mike Perry participated, among others. Work was done on Thursdays.
The Christmas Banquet cost will increase to $25 per person for 2014. It will be held at Winchester Country Club
on Senseny Rd, as it had been the last few years.
Dave Adsit is asking for help in advance of the Boy Scouts’ Valley Rally Ride for 2015.
Robert Golightly’s WW metric century was a successful with about 30 participants and 4 new club members that
day. He hopes to do the ride again next year and thereafter.
Mountain Biking will continue at Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park for November. The day will switch to
Sundays except for the first weekend. That ride is at 11:00AM.
Need new leaders for MS150 for 2015. Please contact a club officer if interested.
After the meeting, we had a slide show and pizza:

The show presentation was made by Spencer Ridings and Richard Hartman. They showed a set of slides taken
by Bob Morris, with all 3 people plus Karen Ridings participating. The ride was to Glacier National Park and
Going-to-the-Sun Road. The ride was hosted by Spencer Ridings as part of a touring group, the Bicycle Adventure
Club (RE: http://www.bicycleadventureclub.org/html/).
Rugby on Wheels
Cyclocross is like rugby in that if you do either you’re tough, period. If you do both you’re crazy tough with the
accent on crazy. Cyclocross racers compete in all sorts of ideal conditions – mud, snow, rain, slush, sleet, and
occasionally sunshine. They race rutty, hilly courses, and if that isn’t enough, their season is in the cold fall and
winter. They clear obstacles placed in their way by some sadistic race planner and if you ask the racers why
they do it, they invariably say they wouldn’t have it any other way. I have never understood cyclocross, but over
the past several years a group of Winchester Wheelmen have taken up the sport with some impressive race
results. If you want to see a race, you can find some info here (Super8 CX) and here (Sportif Cross Cup) or you
can get some info at one of the three Winchester bike shops, or on the Winchester Wheelmen forum.
