A Novel Idea - Calling
teens grades 8 to 12!
Deer Lake Park - A Hidden Gem
November is National Novel Writing Month and Burnaby
Public Library Teen Services wants to get you inspired!
Finish the first chapter of that original novel you’ve
been talking about, and submit it to any Burnaby Public
Library Information Desk by November 30th for a chance
to win a $50 gift certificate to Metropolis at Metrotown.
The ‘A Novel Idea’ contest runs October 1st - November
30th. For full contest details visit http://www.bpl.bc.ca/
teens or call 604-297-4809.
Deer Lake Park is a hidden gem in central Burnaby, with many walking and jogging trails as well as other
outdoor recreation opportunities. Deer Lake Park has a rich natural diversity that can be enjoyed at any time
of the year.
To get you started, the Strawson Trail Route (4.2 km) provides a great workout that begins from the parking
lot by the Burnaby Art Gallery (6344 Deer Lake Avenue) and the Shadbolt Centre (6450 Deer Lake Avenue)
and then on to the boardwalks below The Hart House Restaurant (6664 Deer Lake Avenue). The route travels
along the beach, heading south to the Sperling stairs and then climbs up to the Haszard Street intersection.
Follow the sidewalk along Haszard and Strawson Streets until you reach Brantford Avenue. From here a
natural forest trail leads you down the south slope of the park, crossing Flume Creek on a newly constructed
natural wood bridge connected by a cedar staircase. After crossing the Second Beach Creek bridge at the
bottom of the hillside the trail leads you to the open Heritage Meadows.
As you travel through the grass lands you may spot one of our resident Northern Harrier Hawks hunting for
lunch, or hear the chatter of a Kingfisher along the lake shore. Follow the boardwalk along the western edge
of the lakeshore, past masses of low growing Dogwoods and Labrador Tea. The boardwalk then winds its
way through a small grove of Sitka Spruce. The route then passes by a Heron Rookery before terminating on
the sidewalk at Deer Lake Avenue near the intersection with Deer Lake Parkway.
This circuit takes between 30 and 40 minutes to jog or approximately 50 minutes to walk. For a shorter
circuit (3.8km) 40 minute walk, you can take a lower route that circles the lake and has no elevation gain.
For more information on this, or other outdoor recreation trails in Burnaby, visit www.burnaby.ca or call
604-294-7450.
Wesburn Mural Project
After 30 years the mural on the outside of the Wesburn Community Centre has been refreshed!
Originally created 30 years ago by the Burnaby Beautification Committee in partnership with local
schools, the mural enhanced the environmental setting of Wesburn Park.
In order to refresh the mural, the City of Burnaby Community Arts Development Program worked with
artists Todd Polich, Valerie Methot and Anna Talbot and Wesburn community members to design a new
theme and imagery. There was great interest to explore and rediscover the importance of healthy living
in the Wesburn community. Topics such as culture, play, sport and gardening were recurring themes
while community members created stories of what healthy living meant to them. The final design that
was chosen depicts these stories, and includes elements of family and nature. The theme of apple trees
was also included to honour the apple orchards that used to be in the area. Drop by to check out the
new design.
Solar collectors on the roof of Bonsor Recreation Complex for pool
water heating
Thank you to the community who made their mark by helping with the design and painting of this
wonderful mural! For more information on the Community Arts Development Program visit www.
burnaby.ca, call 604-297-4532, or email [email protected].
Burnaby is Power Smart!
The City of Burnaby was recently ranked #1 by BC Hydro Power
Smart in the ‘municipal sector’ category for implementing the
most energy efficient measures for the past two years. To date, the
Burnaby Energy Conservation Program has focused on a range
of projects, including a number of lighting upgrades. Since 2010,
these upgrades have resulted in over 2.3 GWh of electricity savings,
enough to power more than 220 homes for a year!
An additional recent success is the Bonsor Pool Solar Hot Water
System project which uses solar collectors on the roof of Bonsor
Recreation Centre to heat the pool. This project was completed
with financial support from the Federal Gas Tax Fund, and has
resulted in less natural gas consumption and greenhouse gas
emissions. It is also another example of Burnaby’s commitment to
environmental sustainability.
To learn more about the Burnaby Energy Conservation Program, visit
www.burnaby.ca or call 604-294-7226.

Fireworks– Enjoy Them Safely and Legally
From “trick-or-treats” to fireworks,
Halloween is a fun-filled time of
year for everyone. While fireworks
are exciting to watch, they can
be very dangerous. If handled
incorrectly fireworks can cause
burns, cuts and even blindness.
Even when handled properly
there is a risk of fire. Fireworks
should never be pointed towards
a person, animal, motor vehicle or
building.
To ensure a safe and fun
Halloween, the following
regulations, as provided by the
Burnaby Fire Services Bylaw, apply
in Burnaby:
• Sale of fireworks is permitted only between October 25 and October 31 each year
• Businesses selling fireworks must have a valid business license issued on or before the first Friday in October
• A person must be at least 18 years of age to purchase fireworks
• Fireworks can be set off only on October 31 of each year, unless permission is otherwise granted for special occasions by the Fire Chief
• Use of fireworks is limited to private property, unless a permit has been obtained from the Fire Chief to allow their use on public property
• A person must be at least 18 years of age to set off fireworks on private property with the consent of the property owner
•
Firecrackers – which produce a bang but not a visual display – are illegal to sell, buy or set off any time
A fireworks permit can
be obtained from the
Administration Office at
Burnaby Fire Station #1 at 4867
Sperling Avenue. The office is
open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. Monday to Friday.
For questions or concerns
regarding the use of fireworks,
contact the Burnaby Fire
Department at 604-294-7195
or email [email protected]. To

Bylaw, visit http://tiny.cc/

What to do
with Jack?
‘Jack’ is a Jack O’ Lantern, a carved pumpkin. He’s great fun on October
31st, but by November 1st, he needs to move on.
About 200,000 Jacks are carved in the Lower Mainland each Halloween,
and all too often on November 1st, Jack is bagged, tossed and carted off
to the landfill. Reduce waste, here’s what you can do with Jack:

Eat it
Pumpkins are edible, tasty and good for you since they are high in fibre
and antioxidants. Keep the pulp and check out delicious pumpkin recipes
online. Pumpkin seeds are nutritious for a snack or salad. Pumpkin puree
is fast and easy to make and freeze for another day.
Compost it
Worms like pumpkins. Whether your pumpkin is chopped up and mixed
with yard trimmings for the backyard composter or put in your kitchenbased worm composter, the worms will thank you. And in return you’ll
get nutrient-rich compost that you can use to grow next year’s pumpkin.
Bring it to the curb
Burnaby’s Yard Waste + Food Scraps Recycling Program accepts
pumpkins. Just remove the candle and any other non-organic objects,
and simply place Jack in your green bin.
