
The death of Jesus Christ is for us nothing if we have
not died with him; the resurrection of our Lord is for us
nothing is we have not been raised with him.
Emil Brunner (1889-1966), I Believe in the Living God; Sermons on the
Apostles’ Creed
Having lead the People of God into the Promised Land, and having guided
them through all the struggles that followed their conquest and settlement fo
that region, Joshua now challenges them to decide which God or gods they
will serve. He declares that he and his family will serve no one other than the
God who has rescued and preserved them through all their trials.
1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18
St. Paul writes to the Christians in Thessalonica to give them hope for those
who have already died while waiting for the return of Jesus. He tells them that
on the Day of the Lord, that day when Christ will come again, they too will
rise with those who are still alive, to live forever with the Lord.
St. Matthew 25: 1-13
Jesus tells of a parable about the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven, which he
compares to the sudden arrival of a bridegroom. Those wise maidens, who had
prepared by ensuring that they had enough oil for their lamps, were ready for
his arrival, while the foolish ones, who had not prepared, were absent and
unable to enter the marriage feast.
