Description:
ISP Career Practitioners work with ISP Employer Liaisons/Job Developers to provide a wide
range of career and employment related services to immigrants, to gain meaningful, sustainable
employment in Alberta. Services will include Career and Employment Information Services, Job
Placement and Workplace Training. Staff are responsible to fulfill delivery of services as
outlined in the contribution agreement with Citizenship and Immigration Canada and Jobs,
Skills, Training and Learning. Career Practitioners are familiar with the agency NewOrg and
CIC iCARE database and enter accurately client information, assessment and referrals. The
Career Practitioner works with the client to identify client’s needs, explore services that may
meet these needs and explore past employment and possible current employment aspirations.
The CP works with the client to develop an informative resume and cover letter, coaching as
required, Workplace Training or Job Placement Services in tandem with the support of the
EL/JD.
Qualifications & Skills required:








University degree from a recognized post- secondary institution in social
services/community services/ counseling or equivalent, and/or certification and training
in career development
Career counseling experience in a career or employment services environment,
preferably experience advising immigrants in a non-profit or community setting; able to
understand personal aptitudes, skills and interests as related to career planning, able to
advise individuals changing careers on how to apply previous skills and experience
Understanding of Edmonton/Alberta labor market – key employers in various industries,
emerging large scale projects and strong knowledge of community organizations,
services and supports
Understanding of credential evaluation and its value for various professional
associations and in-depth knowledge of licensing procedures for regulated professions
Membership with the Career Development Association of Alberta required or willing to
become a member
Excellent communication, interpersonal and rapport building skills to support/create
optimal client outcomes
Excellent computer application skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power
Point) and well-developed experience with client database
Ability to solve problems, to multi-task, balance competing priorities and to work
independently with minimal guidance and supervision

Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in an environment where diversity of
people, needs, and situations are a constant
Responsibilities:















Works with clients, individually and in groups, to identify and overcome barriers to
achievement of career goals.
Identify training and employment options and opportunities and assists clients in setting
realistic career goals.
Work with clients to develop job search skills and implement an effective job search and
career development plan.
Based on needs assessment, refer clients to appropriate resources both within and
external to the agency.
Network with newcomer communities to encourage participation in the agency’s
programs and promote the agency and its initiatives.
On a one to one basis or through facilitation of group learning sessions (employment
Readiness Classes) provides clients with practical information and orientation to working
in Canada and Alberta.
Facilitates individual and group learning sessions to build capacities of clients and assist
them to develop and implement their action plans.
Assists clients to create effective resumes to aid their job search
Assist the EL/JDs with the mini-multi-industry job fairs as needed
Guide clients in work search strategies and the development of interview skills
Participates in the development of group learning sessions content
Maintains on-going regular direct support to clients throughout the execution of the
action plan
Enter accurately client information and follow up activities in the agency NewOrg and
CIC iCARE database
Work as part of the ISP team to ensure compliance with the ISP contribution agreement
and the delivery of outcomes expected by the funder
Support other members of the ISP team as required
