The Basilica* of Saint John Lateran is the Mother Church of all the churches in the (western) world and the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. We commemorate its dedication as a way of honoring all the consecrated churches of the world.** But we must heed the words of Saint Paul, You are God’s building, and today remember that by our baptism each of us is consecrated to God’s service. Mother and Head of All the Churches of the City and of the World. This inscription proclaims the Lateran Basilica’s pre-eminence as cathedral parish of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. Our communion, our unity in faith, as a diocese and parish with the Church of Rome and with the worldwide Roman Catholic Church prompts the celebration of today’s dedication anniversary (original church 324 A.D; rebuilt 1726) in every Roman Catholic place of worship throughout the world, from grandest cathedral to remotest mission. The water Ezekiel sees is, of course, God’s creation and gift. But its life-giving streams flow from the temple (through the Church) to rejuvenate a parched earth whose fountain of wisdom, life, hope and love have stagnated. Wherever the river flows, trees blossom with nourishing fruit and healing leaves, recalling the Church’s long service as God’s instrument in every corner of the world, and our baptismal challenge to become The Temple of God. We are such living temples, because Jesus is God’s Temple, raising those baptized into His death. Thus, while we honor our churches as sacred spaces dedicated to the worship of God and service to our neighbor, the Living Church is the Holy People of God. Since November’s liturgy recalls Christ’s coming as Judge, His cleansing of the temple is an appropriate Gospel today, reminding us of our continual need of purification, lest we become a marketplace cluttered with the traffic of worldly profit and gain, rather than the holy dwelling place of God’s Spirit. * The Latin word basilica...has three distinct applications in modern English. The word was originally used to describe an open, Roman, public court building, usually located adjacent to the forum of a Roman town. By extension it was applied to Christian buildings of the same form and continues to be used in an architectural sense to describe those buildings with a central nave and aisles. Later, the term came to refer specifically to a large and important church that has been given special ceremonial rights by the Pope. ** Holy Family Cathedral has never been consecrated. Centennial of Holy Family Cathedral All parishioners are invited to view Anchorage's Centennial website and Facebook page. "We have arrived," so to speak. Any of our parishioners who would remember the "good ol' days" are asked to contribute to the Centennial website under "Family Albums." Fr. Augustine can help you submit photos you may have. http://anchoragecentennial.org/then-and-now Respect for Life Advance Medical Directives (part 1) We should be prepared for those difficult situations when medical decisions must be made. We can safeguard our Catholic values by appointing a trustworthy person now, to make decisions for us, in the event that we are incapable of doing so, either physically or mentally. We need to be aware of the different medical documents available or often used to define a patient’s care. Depending on how they are crafted, some documents can be counter to Catholic morality and are more harmful than we might realize. - Respect Life Month 10-2014 (Entire article available in vestibule) For more information, contact [email protected] Liturgical Schedule and Mass Readings Sunday - Nov 9 The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12; Ps 46: 2-3, 5-6, 8-9; 1 Corinthians 3:9-11, 16-17; John 2:13-22 - Dominican Revelation 21:2-5; Luke 19:1-10 Monday St. Leo the Great - Nov 10 Titus 1:1-9; Luke 17:1-6 Tuesday St. Martin of Tours - Nov 11 Titus 2:1-8, 11-14; Luke 17:7-10 Wednesday St. Josaphat - Nov 12 Titus 3:1-7; Luke 17:11-19 Thursday St. Frances Xavier Cabrini - Nov 13 Philemon 7-20; Luke 17:20-25 Friday Feria, Thirty-Second Week in Ordinary Time - Nov 14 2 John 4-9; Luke 17:26-27 Saturday St. Albert the Great - Nov 15 Sirach 6:18-21, 33-37; Matthew 25:14-23 Sunday Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Nov 16 Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Ps 128:1-5; Thessalonians 5:1-6; Matthew 25:14-30 - Dominican Philippians 3:17-21, 4:1-3; Matthew 9:18-26 Mass Intentions Saturday - Nov 8 Sunday - Nov 9 9:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. 7:30 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Monday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 10 12:10 p.m. Tuesday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 11 12:10 p.m. Wednesday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 12 12:10 p.m. Thursday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 13 12:10 p.m. Friday 7:00 a.m. - Nov 14 12:10 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m. - Nov 15 5:30 p.m. Sunday 7:30 a.m. - Nov 16 9:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. All Souls’ Novena 7 Deceased brothers/sisters of Order + Lucia and Mathia Koh People of Holy Family Cathedral All Soul’s Novena 8 + Luis Arcenio Portio Liz Iandoli + Charles R. Since its inception, CCHD has contributed over $280 million to more than 7,800 low-income-led projects fighting the roots of income inequality and bettering the lives of the 46.2 million Americans living below the poverty-line. In addition to providing relief to the poor by creating jobs and providing access to affordable housing, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development also invests in initiatives empowering individuals to take control of their futures and communities. CCHD seeks to not just treat the outward appearance of poverty but to break the cycle altogether. Of the total funds raised, 25% will be invested back in the local community. You can give with confidence that a significant portion of your donation will be used to assist those affected by poverty living in the Archdiocese of Anchorage. By prayerfully giving to this collection, you can help your brothers and sisters in Christ both across the country and right next door. Thank you for your support of this important collection. Sincerely yours in Christ and Mary, †Roger L. Schwietz, OMI Archbishop of Anchorage
