Stewardship Special Giving for November
SEEDING THE FUTURE: Lutheran Camping Corp.
One of the finest ministries we provide to children and
families in the Church is Christian outdoor ministries.
Since the ministries of The Lutheran Camping Corporation have served congregations and families of Central
Pennsylvania for more than 75 years, our camps have
provided settings where Christ’s love has been shared,
where faith has been nurtured and where lives of children
and families have been strengthened in faith.
We celebrate expansion of ministry at Nawakwa and
we look forward to the retirement of the land acquisition
debt to keep the ministries of the Lutheran Camping Corporation strong and financially viable.
A special campaign, “Seeding the Future,” has been
undertaken across the synod to fund the efforts to continue the best Christian camping program possible for children’s and adult programming.
During the month of November, you will learn more
about The Lutheran Camping Corporation. We pray that
your commitment to ministry will encourage you to become involved with a contribution to our November
camping stewardship appeal.

Built to Serve—A Foundation of Faith
The second three-year
Capital Campaign of
Holy Trinity, Built to
Serve- A Foundation of
Faith, is nearing the end
of its third year. To date,
we have received 53
pledges totaling
$210,916. In addition, the Capital Campaign
Committee is pleased to report there are 92
members who have chosen not to make a formal
pledge but to give as they are able. Thank you
for this wonderful response!
As of Sunday, October 19, 2014, a total of
$249,639.84 ($186,592.00 of Pledged contributions and $63,047.84 of Non-Pledged contributions) has been received. Thank you! Due to
your continuing pattern of regular giving since
the Built to Serve – A Foundation of Faith Capital Campaign began in January 2012, the Finance Committee has made, with prior approval
of church council, a total of six (6) additional
payments totaling $90,000 which have been applied toward the mortgage principal. Thank you!
These additional payments have helped reduce
the mortgage balance from $413,000 to
$211,162. We continue to be pleased and gratified with the response to date and look forward
to continued encouraging contribution reports
for the rest of 2014. A Capital Campaign Giving
Chart, updated monthly, can be found in the
Gathering Area, as well as a weekly update in
the insert of the Sunday bulletin.
The Capital Campaign’s slogan, Built to Serve
- A Foundation of Faith, reminds us the new addition was constructed to provide needed space
for existing and new programs and ministries.
Your continued support is appreciated as the
mortgage continues to be reduced, and our vision of ministry for Holy Trinity and the surrounding community is realized.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of EASS, the
staff and those we serve I want to acknowledge the recent financial contribution made to EASS. We are
grateful for the continued support of our mission. We
are better able to do what we do because of your faith
and trust in us. During September EASS distributed
food to 204 families helping 686 people. 283 people
benefited from the Clothing Bank. We provided 121
rides through the Transportation Service. We also
helped 14 new families, having 44 members. 12 families (34 family members) benefited from our Emergency Financial Assistance Program expending $901.73 in
financial assistance to help with prescriptions, home
heating fuel, and electric payments to prevent disconnections and with overnight lodging. With your support
we are able to continue meeting the challenge. We continue to seek donations of food for the food bank. We
are also in the middle of our annual fund drive that
helps families with their home heating and electric
service shortfalls.
Sincerely, Tom Swalwell,
Exec. Dir. EASS
Office is to find, nurture and encourage financial partners, both congregations and individuals, who share
our passion for theological education and understand
how important it is to raise up trained leaders for the
church. We had a truly banner year last year in developing these partnerships and it is crucial that we continue to find new ones. Please consider recommending our work and mission to your friends who may
also share the same love of the church and concern
for the future as you do. Together we will continue to
serve our Lord and the church we love by raising up
trained leaders for witness and service to the Gospel.
In partnership with you,
Rev. Glenn E. Ludwig
VP of Seminary Advancement
Dear Holy Trinity Family,
Throughout Bob's illness, surgery, and hospice, he and I and the girls have felt truly blessed
by the love and support and prayers from our
church family here at Holy Trinity. Bob loved the
cards and phone calls and visits which lifted him
up during the past several months. For Patricia,
Brooke, and myself, the flowers, cards, food, memorials, and prayers from everyone have given us much
comfort. Pastor and Donna were attentive and vigilant
in their visits which helped Bob feel connected to his
Holy Trinity family and gave me peaceful understanding. Thank you so much for everything. You all are
living God's will. Peace be with you,
Peggy Dean
We would like to thank everyone who helped
make this year’s Oktoberfest a big success. All
who gave donation or time we could not have
done it without you. Thanks to the youth who
walked downtown to hand out flyers and helped
during the event in many ways. The committee
storyboards were well done and added a nice piece to out
upstairs presentation. Thanks to those on the food committee
who worked so hard to have almost 100% of food donated.
Thanks again to all who came to help. It was a wonderful
feeling to see so much support from our members and made
it all worthwhile.
Sincerely, Bonnie Frey & Deb Martin.
Dear Friends,
Thank You! for your partnership. Your support is
important to us and to the well-being of our students.
Students voice what this place and your support
means to them. Our goal here in the Advancement
$547 was collected for the Gettysburg Seminary appeal
in September. With this amount and other monies donated to the seminary on behalf of our church, Holy
Trinity, for the second consecutive year, achieved the
Bronze Leadership giving level, with is $1000- $2,499.
Thank you to everyone!
Many thanks to all those in the congregation who
sent cards, called and came to visit during my recovery from hip surgery. Special thanks to Pastor Herbener and Donna Nace and a big thank you to the
Senior choir. Barry Kreider
If you would like to have a thank you printed in an upcoming
issue of The Window, please bring or send it to the church office or put it in the offering plate. Please clearly mark that you
would like it to be printed in The Window. Thank you.

THE WINDOW, Newsletter of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, PA
November 2014
Thanksgiving is hard, at least, if it is exercised as
an act of true faith. For many, by their own admission, the
Thanksgiving holiday in November is an occasion for
great food, family gatherings, travel, football, and the start
of the “march” to Christmas. You will note that the list is
missing any reference to giving thanks to God.
Shaped by a culture that preaches the ownership of
things to which we are entitled, we are left to view the
giving of thanks as an unnecessary act. There is no reason
to give thanks for what we have because we have every
right to possess our “stuff”. It sounds good. It is an ego
boost to think that I have a right to everything and anything I want, and it works fine except for one little truth.
As a Christian people, we know that everything–
absolutely everything– belongs to God.
It is so hard not to possess. It is so hard not to
wrap our hearts and being around something, anything,
and proclaim it to be “MINE”, but we were not created by
God to own. God placed us in the midst of creation to
tend to it, to care for it. This has to sound so bizarre and
foreign, yet it is biblically true. We are the stewards of
God’s wondrous world. Everything we have is placed in
our care by God to protect and nurture.
If we can stop long enough to look around us, we
will recognize that God has placed us in the midst of a
most wondrous world, and He has given us access to
some absolutely wonderful things to use. We enjoy the
wonder of creation. We live in an age of constantly expanding invention and knowledge that serves to expand
our potential for life every day.
When we finally recognize and embrace our God
given role as baptized stewards of creation, the only response we can make to God is thanksgiving, no matter
how hard it is for us to understand.
In Christ,
Pastor Herbener

Calling all Singers!!
Choir is looking for new members! If you like to sing and have thought about singing with the
choir, this fall would be a great time to try it out! There is a long tradition of choral music at
Holy Trinity and we need to recruit new singers to maintain these traditions! Join the fun as
the Senior Choir begins their weekly rehearsals on Wednesday, September 3 from 6:45 –
8:00 PM. Hope to see you there! Contact Deb Olson or any choir member if you have any
questions!
Finance Committee Report
Thank you for your giving to meet the mission, ministry, and operating expenses of Holy Trinity so far this year. As you can
see from the accompanying graph, several months our expenses exceeded our income, but other months we received more income than we spent. As of the end of August, our expenses for the year slightly exceeded our total income by about $2,000.
The Finance Committee is now working on the budget for 2015. We certainly do not face the budget crisis we faced at this
time last year! Due to your increased giving and the cutting of some expenses, we do not have the same deficit as in previous
years nor the amount of deficit projected for this year.
As the committee works on the 2015 budget we expect there will be needed small increases in some budget categories. Please
take this budget increase into account as you plan your response to this year’s Stewardship campaign.
In October, we will again prepare and send summary financial giving statements for each giving unit. As you review your statement, please consider how you can contribute to the congregation’s mission and ministry the remaining three months of the
year. We would be overjoyed and very thankful if our income matched our expenses for the year, or even exceeded the expenses so we could begin the new year with a cash balance.
