Finishing the Task Serving Today and Tomorrow The new three-year campaign began in January 2015, and the new logo and theme identify the campaign’s primary focus – Finishing the Task (Mortgage) while also illustrating the varied “faces” of Holy Trinity and the surrounding community we serve. To date, we have received 40 pledges totaling $153,452 and the number of individuals who stated they will give as able has now increased to 46. Thank you! As of Sunday, June 15, a total of $29,014.50 ($20,112.00 – Pledged and $8,902.50 – Give as Able) has been received. Thank you! In January 2012, the mortgage amount stood at $412,000 and due to the congregation’s concerted effort, that amount has been reduced to the present figure of $148,526. What a difference your regular commitment to Holy Trinity’s Capital Campaign has made. Thank you! We have now paid off 64% of the original 10-year mortgage, and we estimate there will be a savings of $30,000 in interest charges if the remaining mortgage is paid off by the end of 2017, the last year of this campaign. We can reach this goal! What a joy it will be when we reach that goal, and funds can be directed toward other needed programs and ministries. YEAR ROUND STEWARDSHIP We begin a new church year challenging you to consider Christian Stewardship from an entirely new perspective. Rather than seeing stewardship as purely a “fund-raising” effort conducted each Fall, we hope to reframe and redefine stewardship as embracing how you live every day with God as your center. What does it mean to have God at the very center of your life for all the choices and decisions you make? What does it say about how you manage both your health as well as about how you share your offerings? What does it say about your diet, about how you vote, about how you help your neighbors, about the chemicals you put on the lawn, and the choice of car you purchase? Stewardship embraces all the choices we make and all the values we embrace in life, as stewards of God’s creation. Over the course of the coming year, we will challenge you to consider your life in various ways from a faith perspective. Our hope is to expand the voice that faith has in your living. I want to thank Pastor and Donna for the visits following my recent surgery. A thank you does not seem enough to the caring members of our congregation who so willingly helped me with transportation, when I could not drive to therapy sessions, those who brought food items to me at home, the many who sent cards wishing me well, and your prayers for my recovery. You are truly God's hands at work. Phyllis Peters graciously sent me cards, held me in your prayers, and shared the chancel flowers with me. The visits from Pr. Herbener and Donna Nace were welcomed and appreciated. Thank you very much for your kindness. July Stewardship Special: Lancaster County Council of Churches The Lancaster County Council of Churches has been providing food for the hungry, clothes for the needy, emergency assistance and many other programs to those in need across Lancaster County for 67 years. At our new site will be a clothing bank, food bank and work empowering programs such as Wheels to Work and PA WORKWEAR. In 2013 at our current Marshall Street location, we provided food for over 31,000 individuals through our food bank. Additionally, through our community meal sites in Lancaster city and county we feed over 120,000 individuals, annually. Imagine what we can do in our new facility on Queen Street. We are pleased to be the focus for special giving at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church during the month of July. Matthew Weaver will be speaking on behalf of LCCC on July 5, 2015 at both Sunday services. Director of Development and Finance Matthew Weaver Stewardship Special Giving for August 2015: Milagro House Women come to Milagro House for many reasons. Some are recovering from addiction, some are suffering with mental illness, and most of them have been abused. Some suffer with low self esteem, insufficient education, inadequate parenting skills or poor self discipline. All of them are mothers and all of them are homeless. The program offers women and their children the support they need to achieve success. In addition to housing, the primary focus is education—this is what sets this program apart. But they also provide weekly mental health counseling, budgeting and parenting support. Milagro House is a program that makes a difference in the community as well as in the lives of the women and children they work with. Women who enter Milagro House come with a commitment and determination to move ahead in their education and gain the skills to support themselves and their children and to manage their lives after they move into their own housing. The women who come to Milagro House have the best possible opportunity to succeed in the new lives they have chosen for themselves. What they provide: A clean, safe place for them to live with their children. Food, clothing and personal items until they can afford their own. A focus on education and training that will lead to sustainable employment that pays a living wage. An organized environment with limitations and rules that promote responsibility as well as independence. Intensive, individualized, daily service coordination to help them navigate the complex world they must learn to live in on their own. For additional information check their website at www.Milagrohouse.org To help Milagro House you can use your Special Giving envelope during the month of August. Thanks in advance for your support of this program. THE WINDOW, Newsletter of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, PA JULY/AUGUST 2015 Governor Wolf has imposed a moratorium in Pennsylvania on the use of the death penalty. His unilateral action has been embraced by some, and of course, it has been scorned by many others. Countless numbers of law enforcement officials oppose his action citing the death penalty as an important tool in their fight against crime. I hear their arguments for the death penalty, and I try to understand the daunting task before law enforcement in this violent, aggressive culture we have created. The problem is that the death penalty, as a deterrent to crime, fails miserably. It simply fails! It has never stopped crimes of passion, those crimes where emotion grabs hold of a person, silencing all logic until after a deed is done. For those who intentionally commit crimes, they know the reality of the death penalty lurking out there in society and act anyway, committing crime with both hubris and impunity. I am truly sympathetic to the task facing law enforcement, but lifting up the death penalty as a deterrent just does not work. As God’s children, we are called to treasure life, even the lives of those who have committed heinous crimes. The death penalty simply continues a retribution/blood revenge system that has pervaded any and all human systems of justice since the beginning of time. The Old Testament presents numerous guidelines that both define as well as limit the kind of revenge/ payment that can be exacted by a victim against the person who has wronged or injured them. Indeed, the Old Testament presents any number of systems of justice that are rooted in nothing more than revenge. I am amazed by how often people quote Old Testament law allowing punishment/revenge to be exacted upon someone, all the while forgetting or ignoring the image of Jesus, hanging on the cross in the moments before His last breath, offering His final plea: “Father forgive them.” That image of a crucified, yet forgiving Jesus, must challenge our thoughts on the death penalty. How one translates that into criminal, judicial law is indeed a challenge, and I do not under-estimate the magnitude of that challenge. Still, as a Christian people, our faith must guide us in this matter. My personal opposition to the death penalty is far more pragmatic than faithful. Our system of justice is so thoroughly broken that no one can be guaranteed a fair trial. Power and money speak far more loudly than the truth in so many criminal cases. A poor person, even if innocent, stands an exponentially higher risk for conviction simply because he/she is poor. Until we can fix the huge inequities in this system no one should pay for any crime with their lives-no matter how clearly guilty they may be. An innocent person, wrongly executed because the system did not work, is not acceptable under any circumstances. We have some very serious issues to resolve in this land. Our broken judicial system is clearly one of them. God’s people must insist that justice for all– even for the “bad guys”- must be at the center of any reform. If the system fails for one, it fails for all, and we are all then at risk. May God guide us to create a world in which justice does “flow down like waters” for all people– every last one!
