The Sacred Congregation in charge of Indulgences has declared, “That the offering of thirty Gregorian Masses has a special efficacy for obtaining from the Divine Goodness and Mercy the To have Gregorian deliverance of a suffering soul and is a pious and reasonable belief of the Faithful” (Rescript, 1884). It Masses said, send is evident, therefore, that the Church like a kind mother encourages Gregorian Masses for the souls of the offering and the her departed children. intention to: Mass Intentions Gregorian Masses derive their name from St. Gregory the Great, who was the first Benedictine Pope. Assumption Abbey He ruled the Church from the year 590 to 604. St. Gregory was the first one to have a series of Masses Route 5, Box 1056 offered for a departed soul. Ava, MO 65608 Church Law – Gregorian Masses must fulfill the following conditions prescribed by the Church: 1) They may be offered only for the dead. 2) They can be offered only for one deceased person; not for several nor for all the Poor Souls at the same time. 3) They must be said one each day for thirty consecutive days. If the series is broken, it must be started all over again. The thirty consecutive Masses need not be said on the same altar or by the same priest, but they must be said for the same soul each day for thirty days. Many priests, particularly those engaged in parish work, find it almost impossible to obligate themselves to offer the Holy Sacrifice for a specific intention for thirty days without interruption. For this reason also, one can understand why the stipend for Gregorian Masses should be more than for the same number of regular Masses. Offering – The Trappist Fathers at Assumption Abbey are able to take care of Gregorian Masses. The suggested offering for these Masses is a $150.00. Usually, the Gregorian Masses are begun for one as soon as possible after death. We will promptly acknowledge the receipt of your request and inform you of the date when the series will begin. There is no reason why they may not be offered for a departed person even many years after death. ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM OTHER AREA CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS & PARISHES REQUIEM MASS The Choirs of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church will present the Requiem Mass by Gabriel Fauré in Concert on Sunday, November 9 at 4:00p.m. at the beautiful Subiaco Abbey in Subiaco.
