Mathematics Research Study for Year 8 and Year 10 Students
Our school (Years 8 and 10) has been selected to participate in a study
being run by three of Australia’s leading universities (QUT, UQ and
ACU). The research project entitled “Promoting Academic Aspirations for
Mathematics (PAAM)”, seeks to explore students’ attitudes towards
maths. Please find below key points regarding the project:
 It aims to identify ways to raise student’s academic
aspirations in Maths;
 It has received ethical clearance from the Department of Education,
Training and Employment;
 It is funded by the Australian Research Council;
 Students currently enrolled in Years 8 and 10 will be invited to
participate in the survey, which is about their attitudes and experiences
with regards to Maths;
 Students will be invited to participate in the study again in 2015 and
2016;
 Participation is voluntary and all results will be kept strictly
confidential.
An Information Statement and Opt-Out Form will be sent home with
students in Years 8 and 10 on Monday 10th November. This document
provides you with further information and gives you the opportunity to opt
your student out of the study, should you so choose. Parental consent is
assumed to be given unless a signed opt-out form is received by
Wednesday 12th November. Students participating in the survey will
complete this during their scheduled assembly time on Wednesday 12 th
November.
If you have not received this opt-out form and would like to, or you have
any further questions about the survey study, please do not hesitate to
contact Ms Elizabeth Foster (College Deputy Principal) for more
information.

BULLYING
This week I would like to recommend to all parents a YouTube video;
How Cybersmart Are You
I would also like to provide you all with some general points about
bullying. Firstly our College takes bullying concerns very seriously and is
working to address this issue. Bullying is when a person hurts someone
else on purpose, time and again. The hurt can be physical or emotional.
Bullying can be physical, verbal (also can be via the mobile and
computer), social, racial or sexual. It happens at any age (and is not just
limited to children). Its effects can be life long and may contribute to
depression, low self-esteem, shyness, poor academic achievement,
isolation, and even threatened or attempted suicide.
Some signs of bullying might include:
 Loss of confidence and or becoming withdrawn
 Health problems such as headaches or stomach aches
 Unhappiness or mood swings with sudden temper tantrums
 Reluctance to go to school and changes in academic performance.
 Frightened of walking to or from school, or going on public transport,
or going to a certain place that didn’t disturb them previously
 Feeling ill in the mornings – tummy ache, headache, nausea
 Having possessions ‘go missing’ or regularly having their
possessions/clothes destroyed
 Becoming aggressive and unreasonable and may begin to bully
others
 Having nightmares
 Getting hurt or bruised regularly with no given explanation
 Beginning to do poorly in their school work
(NB: some of these signs may also be the signs of an unwell child)
What you can do:
 Ask your child directly and encourage them by saying you are
concerned and want to support him/her. Make time to listen – encourage
your child to describe what happened, how often, when and where
 Avoid passing judgement, interrogation, over-reacting or offering
advice too soon – it may backfire, and they clam up and don’t want your
involvement
 Ask your child what they have tried already to deal with the problem
– did it work, what happened when they tried a particular strategy
 It is important to try to change your child’s perception in relation to
how they respond in the bullying situation. Acknowledge that a problem
exists – Let them know that bullying is not acceptable and that you will
both figure out a constructive way of sorting out the problem (brainstorm
ideas). Get them to give one of the ideas a go. Review the outcome
The following are the scheduled exam blocks:
Year 12 – 6 November to 12 November
Year 11 – 17 November to 24 November
Year 10 – 24 November to 28 November
Also just a reminder that on Thursday 13 November Year 10 and Year 11
students have a study day and on Friday 14 November the College will be
closed due to the Public Holiday for the G20.
I would just like to wish the Year 12’s all the best in their last exam block
and remind them that it is essential that they give their best in their final
exam blocks to maximise their school result.
A final thought for the Year 12’s is:
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right, I hope you had the
time of your life.

FROM THE DESK OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
Can I remind all parents that next Friday (14th November) is a Public
Holiday in Brisbane and the College will be closed.
Yours sincerely

Dear Families
2015 Pre-Prep Visit
The last two weeks have seen many of our Pre-Prep students come in for
their classroom visits. All students have enjoyed the opportunity to meet
new friends and participate in the learning that takes place in our Prep
classes. It is also a nice way for our parents to meet new families. Thank
you to the Prep teachers and Kylie Wells for co-ordinating this excellent
opportunity.
SRC Free Dress Day
By Harry Miles 5G
Two weeks ago on Thursday the 23rd of October we
had a free dress day. The charity we were supporting was ACT for Kids
which helps children who do not feel safe in their living environments. The
theme for our free dress day was red and we raised over $530.00 for this
worthwhile cause.

HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT NEWS
As we head towards the end of the year there are exciting events and
curriculum offerings happening in our department.
PERFORMING ARTS NEWS
SHAKEFEST SUCCESS
The Queensland Youth Shakespeare Festival regional finals were held
during Term Three and Kelvin Grove State College was represented in two
categories: music and scene. Both entries were selected to take part in
the State Finals of the competition in Term 4.
On the 21th November Dr Tim Foresman will to be speaking to the Year
10 Geography class. Dr Foresman is a world renowned leader in Spatial
Technologies and newly appointed SIBA chair at QUT. He will be talking
to the students about Spatial Technologies, GIS (Geographic Information
Systems), future careers in this field and some of the amazing projects
that he has been involved in; the Cube QUT.
Jordi Allen, Kriza Canzon, Courtney Cavallaro, Chloe Carey, Kaiyah
Chadwick, Ashlinn Theroux, Noah Markwell, Danielle Remulta and Jeremy
Ridsdill-Kenny presented Act 1, Scene 1 of Richard III. Kriza Canzon
performed her original composition based on “A Midsummer Night’s
Dream”.
The Year 12 Ancient History students are researching ancient
‘Personalities in History’ such as Cleopatra, Alexander the Great, Cicero,
Julius Caesar etc. The Year 11 Modern History students are looking at
‘People Power and the 60s’. Year 11 Geography students are studying
‘Transport Infrastructure in South East Queensland’.
Kriza Canzon was awarded second place in the music category for her
original composition at the State Finals. Both she and Jeremy RidsdillKenny have been selected as Shake & Stir Theatre Company members
and the pair will perform in the 2015 production of Romeo and Juliet at the
Brisbane Powerhouse in 2015.
Year 9 History students are studying ‘Rights and Freedoms’, Year 8
History is looking at ‘Making a Nation’ and Year 7 History is finishing off
the year with ‘The Vikings’.
Many thanks go to Ms Juliana Guinane, Senior Drama teacher, for her
wonderful work with the students in providing them with this valuable
opportunity.
PRESTIGE MUSIC FEST GOLD AND SILVER
On October 18, the Junior School string ensembles, Piccolo Strings and
Staccato Strings competed at the Prestige Music Fest. The Piccolo
Strings were awarded a Silver trophy and Staccato Strings a coveted Gold
trophy. Both ensembles were under the direction of Ms Tenille Barrett
who worked tirelessly to ensure the students were well prepared. Special
commendation goes to Gabriel Redmond, Year 5, from Staccato Strings
who performed a challenging solo.
GALA EVENT
On October 31, all instrumental ensembles from across the sub-schools
performed for the annual Gala concert. This was a wonderful celebration
of music making enjoyed by all. It was particularly sad to bid farewell to
our Year 12 Instrumental Music Graduates who have been dedicated to
the Instrumental department throughout their time at Kelvin Grove. Many
thanks go to our 2014 Music Captains, Akari and Kriza who have worked
tirelessly this year to promote and support the music program. To Beth,
Elise, Sian, Casey, Jayde, Sam Shipway and Sam Bowers we thank you
for your enthusiasm and energy this year in all things music.
Our Year 12 students will be heading off to exams shortly and we wish
them all the best. All students still have the opportunity to improve their
results and this can be done by working hard and asking their teachers
for help when they have difficulties understanding a concept.

TENNIS EXCELLENCE NEWS
During Term 3 we had 3 teams compete in Metropolitan school sport
finals: Open Girls - Maddy Jones, Likitha Silapurem, Skye Bishop,
Taylee Davidson and Jasmine Pegg; Open Boys - Casey Edwards, Tim
Henke, Nic Le Pers, Will Jackson and Damon Mitchell; Year 10 Boys Lachlan Dykes, Sam Eastman, Jon Marsden, Jack Edgeson and Joshua
Barber. All teams had convincing victories in their finals.
Another highlight was the performance of our girls’ team, once again
winning through to the State Schools Team Finals held in Rockhampton.
This prestigious competition is open to all State and Private schools in Qld.
After winning the title in 2012 and 2013 our team of Maddy Jones, Likitha
Silapurem, Taylee Davidson and Jasmine Pegg were keen to perform well
for our College. In a very strong field our girls finished 5th with final
positions often coming down to a few games either way. The girls should
be very proud of the way they represented themselves and our College.
On November 16th our Primary School teams will be competing in the
Regional trials to try and secure a spot in the State Primary Schools
Brisbane International Challenge. This tournament is held at Tennyson
during the Brisbane International and students can find themselves playing
alongside the likes of Roger Federer and Serena Williams. We are hopeful
of a strong showing from our teams once again this year.
It is with great sadness that we farewell our graduating students shortly;
Taylee Davidson and Tim Henke have been an important part of our
program for some time and their leadership and enthusiasm will be sorely
missed.
What I Am
Reading Now
What I am reading now is:
‘The Name of the Wind’ by Patrick Rothfuss
This book is about:
A man named Kvothe who has achieved many things in life. The majority
of this book is written in flashback as he tells his story to another with
occasional interludes.
I’d recommend this book:
To anyone who is interested in fantasy novels.
Senior Library – Closure during Week 8
The Senior Library will be closed for its annual stocktake from
Monday November 24 – Friday 28 November (this includes both
before and after school). Could all students please bring back all
resources not being used for assignments as soon as possible?
* Please note: Homework Club will still be on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoon in the Library.
Thank you
