Today, the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, we near the end of
the Church’s Liturgical Year. We have been following a roadmap of
faith and hope laid out for us by Jesus Christ. His instructions, often in
the form of parables, paint a clear path for us, a way back to the
Father.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells yet another parable – the Parable
of the Talents. In the Old Testament, a talent was the heaviest unit of
measure for weighing precious metals. In the New Testament, a talent
was a very large coin – an object of great value. The talent Jesus
spoke of in today’s parable was the largest unit of currency at that
time. Some biblical scholars estimate one talent to be worth 20 years
of wages for a common worker.
Prior to leaving on a journey, the master gave his wealth to his
servants for safekeeping: “To one he gave five talents; to another, two;
to a third, one – to each according to his ability.” (Matt 25:15) Upon his
return, he asked for an accounting from his servants. Two of them had
invested wisely and doubled the amount given to them. The third
buried his one coin, then dug it up and returned it to his master. To the
first two, regardless of the amount they initially received, the master
said the exact same words: “Well done my good and faithful servant ...
Come, share in your master’s joy.” But he chastised the third one,
calling him wicked and lazy, and had him thrown outside into the
darkness.
God gives many talents, i.e., abilities and virtues, to each of us
according to our particular needs. We will be held accountable for the
talents that we have been given. Think about it! In the final judgment,
what will we return to God? Will it be double what He has given us?
Just as an investor analyzes stocks to see where he/she
should invest, so should we take stock of our talents and determine
where they can best be used. Look around you every day; observe
where needs might exist. Is it among the poor, the homeless, the
lonely, the frail, the forgotten? Is it a neighbor, a cashier at a grocery
store, a waitperson at a restaurant, a person we occasionally see at
work, a student three rows across from us, a lone figure on the
playground, a fellow parishioner?
How do we use these talents God has given us? Do we do the
best we can with what we have been given, or do we waste them or
use them foolishly? Do we bury them – thinking they will go
undetected or not be required? The master in today’s Gospel
commended his diligent servants: “Since you were faithful in small
matters, I will give you more!”
In the final accounting, what will God say to us?

A Papal Invitation
It is with great joy that I share
with you the news that Father Tony
Lickteig has been invited to take part
in one of the Papal Private Masses in
the Domus Sanctae Marthae Chapel
in the Vatican on December 9, 2014
at 7:00 a.m. This will be one day after
Fr. Tony celebrates the 60th
anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.
The invitation to concelebrate with Pope Francis comes from
Msgr. Fabian Pedacchio, Personal Secretary to the Pope, and is in
response to a letter I wrote on December 9, 2013, requesting papal
recognition of Fr. Tony’s 60 years of active priestly ministry. Together
we rejoice in this honor accorded to Fr. Tony!

head into the Thanksgiving and

“Being humble helps us share the

May we take the words of Pope Francis to heart, thank God for
all the gifts we have received, and look for opportunities to be
charitable to others.

MONTH OF GRATITUDE
There is so much in today's world to keep us from focusing on our
many gifts. Holy Spirit Parish is taking the month to reconnect to the blessings
we have been given. It's a great lesson for our children, but an even greater
lesson for all adults struggling with the realities of our daily challenges. We
began the month by decorating the church with leaves labeled by the SOR and
school children.
For the month of Thanksgiving, please ponder your many
God-given blessings; then pause a moment at the Narthex table and
write down a gift you are thankful for on the paper provided, no name
necessary. In fact, write as many as you like and encourage your
children to do the same and put them in the Thanksgiving container on
the table.
Each Sunday, our "BASKET OF THANKS" will be a part of our
Offertory procession and set at the altar as a thank you! Then, on
Thanksgiving morning, join us at Mass when we offer all the notes of thanks to
God for our many blessings.
WOMEN of SPIRIT
