Here I sit, working on the newspaper. It’s a bit after 6 a.m. I’ve been up for an hour or so watching the news. A fire is going in the wood stove, I’ve had a bunch of coffee, read some scripture (Proverbs 3 was good) kissed my husband and sent him off to work. A fairly normal morning. The dog is snoozing on her pillow and the chickens are still in their house where a light is on for them this cold morning and the American flag is snapping on the pole here at the home place. A fairly normal morning. And that is because of one thing. Because I live in America where for over 200 years we have had people brave enough, smart enough and tough enough to insist on basic freedoms and rights. And when someone tried to deny them, they fought like all of our lives depended on it. Every little thing I have done this morning, without even thinking about it, and the job I do every week, is made possible because of American military veterans. I own a newspaper. No one can come and tell me what to print or not print. I worship God and read the Bible. No one can come and tell me I can’t do that. I drink coffee, have a dog, own some really stupid chickens, watch the news, have a little piece of land, kiss the man I want to... and my everyday life goes on and on and on because people were willing to fight for my rights. Think about your day. What are you getting to do because of the freedoms here in America? Are you a farmer, a doctor, a teacher, a student? How do you say thank you for that? The only way is to honor our veterans, tell them thank you, and make sure you do your part to see that America stays free. Get involved in something to make America better. Whether it is putting your life into raising good kids, volunteering, giving money to good causes, voting, telling politicians what you think... whatever you can do, please do it. You get the chance because of military veterans. Thank you veterans. Thank you with all my heart. I will try to honor your service to me and this country I love. joyce edie photos Veterans, all of them local, wait for the Morris Schott Elementary program in their honor to begin. Pictured left to right are Ellen Hopkins, Darrell Pressintin, Paul Parker, Bill Millard, Keith Edie, Sandra Douglas, and Ken Broda. The ceremony included singing, the Wahluke High School band playing America the Beautiful to a video showing the sites around the world where U.S. military veterans are laid to rest. Band members, pictured below, had a busy day as they played at three of the four assemblies at the district on Monday. 932.4499 Open for all your medical needs 9 am to 6 pm. Curdy of Desert Aire passed away Friday, November 7 at home surrounded by family at 80 years of age. Born to Roy & Lena (Wagner) Bohn in Potlatch, Idaho, she attended school in Park, Idaho and later graduated Salutatorian from Potlatch High at the early age of 16. She soon moved to Moscow, Idaho for work and later to Spokane where she worked and attended Spokane Community College. While living in Spokane she met and married Jim Curdy, moving to the Mattawa area in late 1966. She worked part time at the local hardware store and was a teacher’s assistant at Wahluke School District until March 1968 when her son was born. Later she was involved with PTA and taught Sunday school for many years as well as Vacation Bible School while her kids were growing up. Her gentle and caring nature made her a genuinely good teacher for many children, including her own. She was an early member of the Sagebrush Senior Center and also a Lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, spending many of her early years volunteering and making new friends. For the past nine years she was primary caregiver after her diabetic husband suffered a stroke. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends, playing with her children and grandkids and tending to her flowers and garden. Irene was always busy doing something, from repairing things around the house to helping neighbors in need. Later in life after moving to Desert Aire, she acquired an injured stray black Lab, she named “Ben,” nursing him back to health and later taking him on daily walks in her neighborhood and later on the new shoreline trails added by the PUD. She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Lena Bohn, daughter Laura Wisdom, brother Archie Bohn, and granddaughter Catherine Wisdom. She is survived by her husband James “Jim” Curdy, son James (Linda) Curdy. Grandchildren; Ranaun “Eric” Wisdom, Amber Wisdom of Eugene Oregon, Heather (Luis) Medrano, Trevor Waters, Kyle Romaneski of Yakima and six great grandchildren. Throughout her two year battle with colon cancer, including multiple surgeries and chemotherapy, she almost always had a good outlook on life trying to find something good in each day. She will be truly missed and always in our hearts. Services will be held Friday, November 14 at 10 am in Yakima at Rainier Memorial Center located at 2807 Terrace Heights Dr., next to Terrace Heights Memorial Park. She will be laid to rest at Terrace Heights immediately following the services. *Gas *Propane *Groceries Great Food including * Oriental Menu * Pizza * Hamburgers *Warm Inside Seating *Laundromat We have hot food, cold drinks and friendly service! Five are pictured here while three others speak in another classroom. From these second graders at Saddle Mountain Elementary to the high school, the family talked to students about how to plan and handle your life to be successful. Ashley Yorgesen No stats were available, but the Warriors did not have a good outcome against Zillah in the District playoffs last Friday. The Warriors came in as the fourth seed matching up against first place Zillah. The final score was 42-8. Alex Chiprez carries the ball for Wahluke in this game photo. Eight members of the Santiago Ińiguez and Guadalupe Rodriguez family, former Mattawa residents, were at the Wahluke School District last week to speak to students. From the second grade to the high school, the family, five of them pictured above, talked to students about how to plan your life to be successful. The family said they have been doing motivational speaking for some time, but this was the first time so many of them teamed up to give a presentation. Basing their presentation on The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People by Stephen Covey, the family talked with students about planning for success. Even as low as the second grade, students were encouraged to do the things that will make them successful later in life. Things like; listen to your parents, do your homework, don’t just sit and watch TV, be responsible for the things you know you need to get done. Teacher Mark Hull said he especially appreciated the family’s encouragement to the kids to dream and dream big. “They told them to dream big and hold on to those dreams. They are reachable,” Hull said. One reason they can say that and be legitimate is because of their father. The Ińiguez children say their father dreamed and believed all his children would go to college, and they did. All 11 of them are college graduates. Wahluke runs to new records The Warrior Cross Country season concluded on Saturday, Nov. 8 in Pasco as Lalo Valdenea, Stephanie Juarez, and Jessica Arellano ran in the State Championships. In the girls race, a stunning finish took place as Zillah’s Alexis Redfield came from seven seconds back in the last quarter mile to claim the victory over Cascade-Leavenworth’s Erin Mullins. Stephanie Juarez accomplished her goal of breaking 22:00 minutes, posting a 21:59 and crossing the line in 84th place. She had set out to beat the 22 minute barrier and did it with no time to spare. Her new time is the fastest performance at state by Wahluke runners, and set a new school record for 5000 meters. Jessica Arellano finished in 101st place by clocking 22:33. She is third on the all time list for performances at state by Warrior runners, behind Stephanie and Thalia Quintero’s 22:21, set in 2010. The girl’s team competition was taken by Lakeside, but the SCAC showed well in this year’s race with Zillah taking fifth place, and the Royal girls finishing ninth. In the boy’s race, Ryan Clarke of Port Townsend won the day by crossing the line in an amazing 15:37. For the Warriors, Lalo Valdenea, running in his first state championships, finished in 17:32, good for 57th place. Lalo now ranks third on the Warrior all time list for state performances behind Ramon Bravo’s 17:02 from last year, and Salvador Mendoza’s 17:28 from 1997. As a Warrior junior, Lalo can set his sights on those times ahead of him for his senior year. Team first place for the boys went to Medical Lake, with Royal taking seventh. They ask people to avoid the area if possible and watch out for workers. Work continuing on Wanapum stabilization So when will the Columbia River water be back up to its regular levels? According to Grant County PUD Public Affairs Officer Chuck Allen, the district is working to have enough done to begin raising the reservoir behind the dam to an intermediate level by the end of the year. He said that they then hope to have work completely finished before the start of the recreation season of 2015. The water level behind Wanapum Dam was drawn down in February after a 65 foot crack was found in one of the piers at the dam. Since then no one has been allowed on the exposed shoreline because of safety concerns and Native American artifact and sacred ground concerns.
