Easter Services this week
As has often happened in the past, the Riverside Community Church and Grace Lutheran church
will be joining together for Ash Wednesday and Lenten Services.
Ash Wednesday Service and imposition of the ashes will be held at Grace Lutheran Church on
Feb 18 at 7 p.m.
Lenten soup supper will be held each following Wednesday during Lent at 6 pm with worship
service at 7 pm. Lenten services will be held at Riverside Community Church. Lenten services will
begin on Feb. 25 and continue through March 25.
The community is invited to attend one or all of the services in preparation of Easter Sunday, when
Christians celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead.
Donkey Basketball Feb. 20
Spring means lots of things and locally it means FFA Donkey Basketball. This year the FFA
fundraiser will be held on Friday, Feb. 20 at the high school gym. It’s always a lot of family fun and
is one of the fundraisers of the local Future Farmers of American chapter. Money raised helps fund
members to go to leadership events, other FFA activities during the year and helps with the students
fair projects.
Ag Instructor Becky Carollo explained that teams will consist of five players, where four ride the
donkeys and one stays on the floor. There are lots of rules, some not followed too well, like having
to be seated on your…donkey to shoot a basket. Doors will open at 6:30 with game time at 7 pm.
Ticket prices now are: Adults: $8, Student (7-12) $6, Child (K-6) $4. At the door all tickets are one
dollar more.
The FFA is still looking for businesses that would like to provide a team of 8-10 people. If you
want to form a team, contact Becky at (509)521-0208 or email at [email protected].
Soccer Spaghetti Feb. 21
The boys soccer team is holding a fundraiser to earn money for their annual trip to the West side
on March 13 to visit Seattle University and play soccer against Seattle Academy and University Prep
colleges. The dinner and silent auction will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the high
school commons area. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ASB cards and $5 for kids 12
and under.
If you can’t make the dinner, donations are also accepted. Contact Coach Arthur de Victoria or
Malisa Fox for more information. And details on the trip will be given out at the dinner. The dinner
will be served by the boys soccer team.

Wrestlers to state
Both first year Wahluke wresting head coaches have wrestlers headed to state.
Under coach Rigoberto Jimenez, 152 pound Francisco Tapia, right, earned a spot
at state and two Lady Warriors are also going. Juniors Victoria Gaytan, above and
Eva Herrera, coached by Carolina Miramontes, will also be wrestling this weekend in
Tacoma.
In addition, Fatima Romero, a senior, and junior Rebekah Barajas are going to State
as alternates.
Wrestling takes place this Friday and Saturday at the WIAA Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome. The wrestlers will be leaving Mattawa on Thursday at around 12:30 p.m.

This column is probably directed
at people who have been married 20
years or less or have some crackpot
idea that marriage and relationships
are “happily ever after.”
Keith and I just celebrated a pretty
horrible Valentine’s Day. And it really
doesn’t matter one whit.
Here’s the short version of what
happened. Keith, one of the few times
in his life, decided to surprise me with
a romantic VD getaway. It fell apart
royally.
He made reservations at a nice hotel in Richland and had dinner reservations all setup for Anthony’s. He had even researched
and made a file of antique shops, art galleries, second hand stores,
museums and walking trails. He brought the multi-page file folder
with him and was going to then take me to some of these spots.
He told me to pack a bag and we headed out, me having no idea
what was in store. I had noticed that he was kind of quiet and kind
of snuffling.
We got to the hotel. It was under construction, which he didn’t
know. Seriously. There was a construction paper pathway (not a
yellow brick road) leading to our room, we visited with the sheet
rockers in the lobby while they worked and we dodged large stacks
of tile. Nice.
We get to the room, he fell asleep. I woke him up after I watched
some TV. He fell asleep. We went for a short walk, he fell asleep.
He had come down with a whopping cold. We cancelled dinner
reservations, ordered in Thai food, and fell asleep. I packed up the
next morning, Saturday, and drove him home where he slept the
rest of the weekend.
My present was a small bag of Tim’s Jalapeno Chips and some
Jelly Bellies. I went for a walk at the river and ate them by myself.
He was still asleep. The whole thing was anything but romantic
and I spent the weekend checking on him, working outside and
being alone.
The moral here: So what? We’ve been married 40-plus years
and it sure ain’t happily ever after. Sometimes it’s happy and sometimes you wish you were in the hereafter, not here.
Love isn’t about some goofy day. It’s thinking more about them
than yourself. It’s shutting your mouth when you want to mouth
off. It’s picking up the dirty socks for the hundredth time and being
happy you have someone’s socks to pick up. It’s making a commitment to everyday life with the same person and praying it will last
forever and ever.

Individuals and businesses can drop off lights for recycling, with a 10 light limit per day.
“Fluorescent lights are long-lasting and energy efficient, but they contain small amounts
of toxic mercury, which
needs to be recycled or
properly disposed of,” said
Laurie Davies, manager of
Ecology’s Waste 2 Resources program. “With
the launch of LightRecycle
Washington, we’re making
it easier to comply with the
law and protect the environment.”
Since 2010, it has been
illegal in Washington to
dispose of mercury-containing lights in the regular
garbage.
EcoLights Northwest,

recycling company that will

Public Records
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office received the following incident reports:
A domestic disturbance was reported at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday. Mattawa police asked
deputies to check on the welfare of a female subject who had been the victim of domestic
violence in the past. Deputies responded to the 20900 block of Road 24-SW and arrested
Jose Lorenzo Sanchez Sanchez, 23, Mattawa, on suspicion of fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) and booked him into the Grant County Jail.
100 ways to celebrate school
Why does second grader Denise Nunez
have so many Band-aids on her? And why
is teacher Irene Longmire adding another
one? Denise, right, had to get a quick
repair from teacher Irene Longmire before
a 100-school-day photo was taken on Feb.
4. Denise had to have a few more Bandaids applied to her face as some of her 100
items had fallen off. Irene’s second graders at Saddle Mountain Elementary were
just one of the classes who celebrated the
100th day of school. Students and staff
often dress up with 100 objects or dress
up like they are 100 and teachers take
advantage of time to teach all things 100.
The second grade students were very enthusiastic when this reporter came to take their photo as they celebrated
the 100th day of school at Saddle Mountain Elementary. To be fair, the
students gathered for this photo, but having their photo taken wasn’t what
they were so happy about. It was because they spotted one of their favorite people, Mrs. Longmire’s husband, Victor, as he came into the room.

Begin early for healthy
teeth for a lifetime
Submitted by CBHA
The American Dental Association sponsors National
Children’s Dental Month every February to raise awareness
about the importance of oral health in children. Dr. Alvin
Thien, director of Columbia Basin Health Association’s dental clinics, agrees. “Children sometimes end up in hospital
emergency rooms with bad tooth aches,” he said. “Regular
dental care prevents this type of serious problem.”
Dr. Thien said dental visits usually start after a baby
has received a tooth or two – usually between six and 12
months. Regular dental appointments should occur after
the first visit. “If you suspect your child has dental problems, take the child to see a dentist as soon as possible,” he
concluded. “We always leave room in our schedules for
emergencies.”
Tooth decay often starts in infancy if babies are put to
bed for a nap or a night’s sleep with a bottle of milk, formula
or sweetened liquid. Babies should not be put to bed with
a bottle.
Dr. Thien said the sugars in these liquids are used as an
energy source by the bacteria in plaque, the thin film of
bacteria and byproducts that constantly forms on the teeth.
“The bacteria produce acids that attack tooth enamel.” This
condition is called baby bottle tooth decay which occurs
when a child’s teeth is frequently exposed for long periods
of time to liquids containing sugars – most notably milk.

“Baby bottle tooth decay is a dental condition that can
destroy the teeth of an infant or young child,” Dr. Thien
said. After the baby finishes a bottle, a quick wipe of the
baby’s mouth with a clean, damp cloth or other cleaning
device greatly reduces the chance for decay. “Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears,” Dr.
Thien said.
